I am unfamiliar with any previous Harry Potter games but I believe this is the first where you're able to create your own character and attend Hogwarts.

It's definitely caught my attention and I thought I might share it here. (Apologies if this has already been posted on the forum >.>).

I'm not big on the look of it, ditto the gameplay. I'll wait and check back on it when it's out though, could be good.

I think this should be in "General Discussion".

Anyway, while I don't have many hopes for the game to be good, it may give some good inspirations. And who knows, maybe I will be surprised and it will actually have decent gameplay.

In Early Access at the moment and have played into the 2nd year.

    It's not Pay to win or anything, but there are waits inbetween some missions of 1/3/8 hours in order to entice you to pay more. Same with gems etc;

Basically the gameplay is that you use your energy, click the item 3/4 times to build up the bar in order to complete missions/objectives.

So gameplay is essentially minimal. Storyline is... Decent at best.

I'm essentially playing this solely on nostalgia and only to see how the story moves as the character gets 'older'.

If you've got any questions let me know

@Wynter, does this take place in the Harry Potter era? (1991-1998) What's the gameplay like on duels? Any RPG elements, chracter building, progression? Or is it just a poin'n'click adventure with a Potterverse skin and some RPG-superlite stuff?

There's been 2 duels so far. Basically you pick a stance and the opponent picks one. Depending on that, one person attacks or gets attacked. So rock, paper, scissors. You have attacks for each of the three, so defensive is expelliarmus, you get more variety as the years go on but it's not impressive by any means. People have say 50/100 Life points and it's just like an overly slow Turn Based System?

You have three skills. Courage, Empathy and Knowledge depending on them you can get extra dialogue options/benefits in certain conversations but the story seems to be firmly set. If you fail you just go again, choices seem to have minimal consequences but I haven't played from multiple perspectives so I can't say that with certainty.

Any familiar faces, besides Bill, Tonks, and teachers that still teach at the time of HP?

It was indeed more of a chore than an exciting event.

McGonagall, Flitwick, Hagrid and Snape. Dumbledore's had a few interactions but nothing major really.

The writing's honestly just poor. The conversations are so stilted for example and I want it to be better but it just doesn't seem to really get there? I'd say Year 2's been a miniscule improvement at best.

I used the thread about the game being developed by Niantic - Wizards Unite - as reference, and because it was posted and remains in this forum I figured this was the correct place for it.

So far as you can tell, is there anything that this game does right?

I'd like to believe the story will get more complicated and enjoyable as time goes on and your character ages, but to be truthful I didn't have high hopes for the game to begin with =P

This thread is just too disappointing. I'd really hoped for an excellent Hogwarts rpg game and it looks like this isn't going to live up to the hype. :,(

It feels like every step they take forward is another step back.

They capture the idea of Hogwarts as this Mysterious castle filled with thousands of years of history to unlock well through the mystery itself.

Then three seconds later you're learning a charm to find all these secret passageways. As if no hogwarts teacher or student has ever thought of such a thing before.

I understand it's a gameplay mechanic, but it could have been positioned better if you catch my drift? It just screams of shit writing and your best friend literally just spends the whole game telling you how fucking great you are and serving as Hermione #2 as a context device.

I will say Year 2 is getting more interesting as I get into the story, but the games now adding more waiting periods to try and entice me to spend so it'll be a long while before I finish the story I imagine. Another week or so likely.

Finished Year 2 and Early Access.

Second year story is much better, the year itself though had a lot more waits inbetween from what I remember of the first year so required a lot more patience or a lot more money if you wanted to sprint through it.

Introduced some characters we all know and while I still have some complaints over the characters themselves I'm more than happy to give Third Year a shot depending on when it releases.

So this was officially released today and I spent most of this evening giving it a go. Pretty quickly saw where Wynter was coming from. A little bland, based mostly on plot movement. The gameplay is ridiculously easy with the only mental exercise being enduring the forced waits and timing your return to the game so you don't miss anything important. I actually don't mind the waits conceptually (clearly designed though they are to frustrate people into paying to skip them). They make the game something you can play a bit, go away and do something else, and come back to - which is ideal for someone like me who likes multi-tasking. It also makes the game last longer which is probably a good thing.

I've only seen the first few chapters of plot, not even halfway through first year yet. It's a bit thin, but not terrible, and I'll take others' word for it that it gets better. I also get the sense that my in-game choices aren't really making much difference yet, but online reviews has suggested this, too, changes later on, so I'll sit tight. I had been hoping for some sort of multiplayer element to the game - it would be great to interact with other human-controlled characters - but I can see how that doesn't quite fit the style. Oh well. Perhaps they'll come up with something in later versions.

All up, while the game isn't perfect, I'm enjoying it enough to keep going. Disclaimer: I'm not really a gamer in general terms, so possibly I'm a bit easier to please than most.

I played for about twenty minutes, then uninstalled. Basically no gameplay involved; just an interactive story. And the story is not interesting enough to keep me coming back when I have a backlog of about 40 novels, 15 shows, and 10 games.

Played for a day and gave up.
I don't mind the recharging bit, and I'm not a gamer, so I'm okay with interactive stories and non-existent gameplay. But the story doesn't even make sense if your character is a Slytherin. There's Snape who attacks a (Slytherin!) first-year without any feasible motivation, a Slytherin bully who tries to mess up with my cauldron, a best friend who is a cross between Ron and Hermione (awkward and insecure, but obsessed with books and knowledge) plus something about the protagonist's lost brother, who everyone seems to be worried about. Basically "Philosopher's Stone" meets "Cursed Child".

In order to brew a potion or learn a spell, you need to repeatedly "roll eyes" at your nemesis, "groan" or listen to your best friend, who alternates between blurting out random facts and admiring your magical ability.

Yeah, this is not in any way a quality game. I can play it while on the treadmill, though, so I'll probably keep progressing just to see how it goes later on.

I always feel kinda bothered at games like this. It feels like we only have a limited amount of shots at coming up with a good game before the franchise is abandoned.

Jim Sterling did a video on this game, for those who might care.
