I used to think that way too. But then I realised sport provides a valuable organising principle around which alien populations, immigrants and the like, create social capital and form urban identities. Contrary to the liberal spiel, diversity is not automatically a godsend --- unless harnessed to profit, it usually erodes public goodwill, neighborliness, and is divisive over time. Building a local sports stadium, assuming one has a robust home team, literally moves housing (and other) markets and forces interactions to a degree incapable of most other policy and rezoning measures considered today.

 

Can you seriously not even let a discussion over the merits of *quidditch* go without finding a way to whine about 'the liberal spiel' or am I just expecting too much?

 

lol, it was merely dismissive phrasing with some tongue-in-cheek, considering my sympathies to liberal causes. The intent was to share some factoids that seemed interesting and cool enough to bring up. But shall watch my language if it errs to trigger.
