Hold up, I'm not big on politics. What is the argument saying that taxation is theft?

 

The state has a monopoly on the legal use of force. Ordinarily, the use of force or the threat of force to take money from someone is theft.

 

To severely over-simplify a lot of libertarian philosophy, the gist is that governments collect taxes by threatening the citizens with force if they fail to comply (read: arrest them, and inflict whatever violence is necessary to force their compliance with that). In every other case, threatening someone with force in order to take their stuff is considered theft. Ergo, taxation is simply state-sanctioned theft.

 

Let’s be clear, though. This argument is generally considered fucking retarded for an absolutely astounding number of reasons.

Technically, Netflix and Amazon paid their full taxes.

But yeah, I’ve heard she’s pretty honest with her money, even if she’s managed to turn her own universe into its own fanfiction trope.

 

I wouldn't call it fucking retarded. Obviously, if you have an elected government that votes, gets the majority, and passes a tax bill with higher taxes: it's legit.

However, if you have something like a military dictatorship "taxing" you, it's not tax, it's robbery.

 

Not necessarily. A people can decide to form a non-democratic government and give it the power to tax. The idea that democracy (and only democracy) conveys legitimacy, or that citizenship is effectively the right to blank slate individualism in a particular piece of clay, is very new. And even then, pretty much limited to a political minority within western civilizations.

Which is probably only why libertarianism only applies to the most individualist tail of that particular demographic.
