:facepalm I read that as 'put a box with a couple of books on top.' Though it's silly to take it out at all. Weld that sucker shut, take out the whole microwave and have it compacted in a junkyard or something. Then get a new shiny microwave.

I should probably post some pics. What Harry really walked into when he caught Malfoy crying in Moaning Mrytle's bathroom:

I read that last picture as Iron Potter and couldn't figure it out. I feel silly.

My brother showed that to me a few days ago and we got into a bit of a discussion. Wasn't the entire first chapter of Philosopher's Stone about how the Dursleys were pretty much the same before Harry even showed up?

Turns out that's mentioned in those comments, but I don't buy it. Even disregarding that JKR probably didn't even have the idea for Horcruxes or their One Ring-like effects until much later.

IIRC, JKR mentioned in some interview that the horcrux idea came to her around the 3rd or 4th book. So yeah... they were just generally horrible people and probably didnt even deserve their semi-redemption in DH.

As my recent trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art taught me, even the Romans feared He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. They must have had some damn good seers.

And you'd have to extrapolate the curse of being around a Horcrux to all the time Harry spent at Hogwarts - with Ron and Hermione, say. It should have turned them, as well. Doesn't hold up.

Cool idea for a fic, though. Harry's very presence poisoning people over time.

The horcrux slowly emphasizing characters 'worse' traits over time could actually make a lot of sense for a bunch of different character decisions over the years.

Or what if mere ownership was enough? What would that say for Bellatrix and Lucius?

Edit: Or Hogwarts for that matter. A Horcrux dead center of one of the most impressive works of magic in the whole castle.

The post messes up by using three examples (Dumbledore, Ron, and Ginny) where people directly interacted with a Horcrux. The Dursleys' never have direct contact with Harry's Horcrux, and as Joe pointed out, it would have shown effects on Ron and Hermione if it worked that way.

If you wanted to argue horcruxes can effect their environment in that way, use the Gaunt ring in the Grimmauld Place. It's there for years and Kreacher is driven insane (more likely due to isolation, but he does perk up in the 7th book when the ring is out of the house) and Sirius starts to lose it. Harry even notes Sirius' bad mood during Christmas. Again, also likely due to isolation/feeling useless, but then those are similar emotions to what the were used against Ron by the horcrux.

Maybe it affects people through touch contact only? The Dursleys would have had a lot of that with Harry before he was old enough to do things himself, and it could be implied that when he got older they started smacking him around and coming into contact that way.

I never had the impression that the trio were particularly touchy-feely, cept for Hermione hugging him every so often.

...but that's a dumb idea, nvm.

It's the Locket, not the Ring, but basically yes.

I like this whole Dursley idea, actually, although I don't think it actually has any real basis in canon. But you could make it work, I think. Perhaps by the time Harry goes to Hogwarts, his own magic/personality has grown enough to suppress any effect it might have had on the people around him, although that then leaves the question of why the Dursleys are still tools after he gets back. Perhaps it's so ingrained it takes them years to fully recover or something.

Anyway. Yeah, no real canon basis, but just plausible enough that it could work with a bit of creative tweaking.

You're forgetting the 4th example where someone interacted with a Horcrux for a long period of time. Harry himself. And there goes every bit of that stupid premise unless Harry would have originally turned into literal Jesus. Never raising his hand to violence, healing, and removing malevolence by will alone.
