You can't claim all 1st world monarchs are useless and have no power and then call this a fluke.

Why not? In all cases except the city-states it's true.
Edit: Monaco's defense is managed by France and the Vatican's by Italy.

Because it's basic hypocrisy to state ALL first world monarchs are useless, but City-States are a fluke.

Also, you really should define useless, as Country morale and a symbolic figurehead are powerful social tools for the government, therefore, not really useless.

But I digress as we're now talking politics rather than the topic in the OP.

Here, have a story I found. It's not exactly what OP was looking for, but it eventually brings Harry into contact with the Queen of England.

When you stated that monarchs are only kept for tourism, yellow press and traditionalist.

Here's another fic. A one shot this time as far as I can tell. Not sure in terms of quality as I mostly got bored and skimmed it. Probably terrible though.

Back to the OP's question (and away from the new guy's posturing on matters monarchical), another story of this type would be GenkaiFan's Quoth the Raven, Nevermore.

It's not the greatest story (this is by the same authors as the highly overrated Poison Pen) but probably deserves mention in the context of the thread.

So your actual problem was that "symbolic figurehead" wasn't tacked onto the end of that list? That doesn't significantly improve the credibility of modern monarchies, you know.

You're right in that it doesn't make them useless though, especially for countries that literally have no other means of existing other than tourism.

Like, say, Monaco, because it is a country that is .75 square miles in size, with 37,000 people in it. It's smaller than most cities/towns.

    "Country" lol

How did I miss this? Absolutely hilarious.

Wasn't the Spanish transition to democracy in the 70s and 80s in large part because of King Juan Carlos I? Wasn't King Christian X of Denmark instrumental in opposing German occupation in World War II? Didn't the Queen (or her representative) prorogue Canada's parliament in 2008/09 with significant political ramifications? I mean none of this is exactly ancient history. Constitutional monarchs continue to have significant parts to play in modern politics. Supposedly Queen Elizabeth thoroughly reads government dossiers for two or three hours a day (and has done for decades) and regularly schooled Tony Blair during their weekly advisory meetings.

They're not strictly necessary (it wouldn't be a fun short-term transition but a republican Britain would not exactly be difficult to imagine) but they still serve slightly more purpose than "here's some castles where fancy people live and order around servants."

As to the topic of the thread, I've seen the trope used before. In particular I seem to recall a fic where the representative of the Queen shows up to the Wizengamot and somebody kills the messenger for being a filthy muggle or some such drivel. That portion of the fic might have been from Augusta Longbottom's perspective? I don't quite remember. From what I do remember of the other fics out there, though, many of these end up being giant muggle-wanks about the superiority of science, the backwardness of the wizarding world, and how great an assault rifle is at killing Death Eaters. If anybody has a line on a fic that is both readable and doesn't do that I'd be all for a recommendation.

No. "Emperor" does NOT use muskets to fight wizards/muggles. I got bored with this Emperor story when the author decided to bring in the the lame ass side stories about the other characters (and these chapters dont include Harry in said chapters), I dont give a shit about these side chapters. I want to read about Harry, not some random fuckstick I have no interest in. Either bring in Harry into these chapters, or GTFO; kthxbye.

Like I said before, I got "Emperor" mixed up with an earlier Fic by the same author, "The Dark Wars" series.

I'm not going to pretend I remotely enjoyed "Emperor" (which I stopped bothering to read in the first chapter), but it's reasonably good compared to "The Dark Wars". Seriously, the Muggles beat the wizards with freaking muskets and other Napoleonic-era stuff, including wooden ships, redcoat uniforms, and actually using horses in combat. I used to think it was actually a parody of most "Wizards Bad, Muggles Good" Fics until I realized "Emperor" was a serious attempt at the idea.

I've checked both stories. You misled me - Harry is not a royal wizard there. He is just a teacher in the new magic school.

I don't know what exactly the definition of a "Royal Wizard" is, but in those stories Harry and Sirius are basically the Queen's connection to the magical world, and her enforcers.
