HONKS isn't dead by a long shot. I suppose you could say it's in the last throes of the insurgency if that'll make you feel better.

Lorddwar's Summer of Change story was a bit thick to the point of gagging on fluff on occasion, but still an excellent recent complete Harry/Tonks fic. Think about the pairings in most other finished 300K+ word fics...

HBP did ruin Tonks character, and thus much interest in her. Now that she is an empty soulless being best served as a gaping cavernous vagina, is it so surprising that Harry/Ginny folks might like Harry/Tonks now as well? Just a thought (even though I don't believe this to be any sort of actual trend). Every ship has its share of disgusting wretched stories behind it, and almost all of them are clones of each other with only the girls name being changed. There are still some good HONKS fics out there. Probably most of the best ones seem to have been abandoned though, but it's not like there's tons of completed Bella fics or Narcissa ones either. Ruskbyte's Flying Without a Broom, which hasn't even yet reached the HONKSyness is probably still my favorite. Of course we're getting close to two years since it had an update.

If thesteffis ever actually got off his fat arse and wrote another chapter, I bet we'd see a nice Harry/Tonks/Gabrielle fic. Yarrgh's fic has some Harry/Tonks and it's got more than a few fans around these forums.

In terms of popularity and interest I don't think we can ever fairly group Harry/Tonks with Ginny, Hermione, Draco, or Severus. Probably not even Cho or Luna. Though those two are a bit closer. (If you're curious I just sorted by Harry(1) and Tonks(2) and found 11 pages of fics on ff.net. Harry(1) and Luna(2) yielded 25 pages. Harry(1) and Cho(2) gives us 22 pages. And just to make you happy Harry(1) and Draco(2) is 596 pages worth of fics. So sleep easy in the knowledge that for every bad HONKS fic there's over 50 Harry/Draco fics out there. Many of them bleeding out their own... nevermind.)

Are we losing Harry/Tonks? No.
Did HBP crush a lot of interest in Harry/Tonks? Yes.
Did HBP crush a lot of interest in writing fanfic? Yup.

And that's the problem.

 

well you all should have realized that its very difficult to write 7 books based on a series of characters. the 5th books should have been a warning that Rowling was not really putting much effort into her writing. HBP seemed very much like a bad sequeal to a movie like oceans twelve. just a get to gether of a bunch of characters and while HBP explained alot about voldemort it detracted alot more from the rest of the characters and the story.

Yes, we are losing h/tonks b/c everyone who used to love h/g h/hr just figured out how shitty the pairing is so instead of writing a shitty h/g h/hr story they are now using the same concepts and ideas but making it h/tonks..

 

Honestly, I don't think we're losing H/Tonks. I actually think the pairing is growing in popularity, which is the problem. The relatively few good HONKS fics (The pairing's never been *that* popular) have reached the point where they've got fans who've read them and thought 'Hey, that's cool, I wanna try it' and written their own crappy derivations thereof. In that respect it is heading in the same direction as H/G; a few good fics (a *VERY* few in the case of H/G) becoming lost in the sea of crappy fangirlfics. I doubt HONKS will ever get to the point of crap-saturation H/G is at but I do think it's going to get worse, and we're going to see more crappy HONKS fics, which IS an issue since it makes the pairing more cliche'd, which discourages competent authors from writing it, but there's not much that can be done about it save those good HONKS writers on here doing their best to prove the pairing hasn't been given over to the fangirls just yet.

Have to agree with Vayne. Honks will be dragged through the mud like H/G because JKR said it was going to be H/G. So all the crappy fic writers with the talent of a retarded monkey will spew out H/G fics. Cause JKR said it was THE pair.

In other words they don’t have the ability to see beyond what JKR says, so no Honks (which is a very good thing). Mind you, there are always exceptions to the rule but thankfully they are far and few.

Upon H/T - I was surprised that nobody really caught up on the huge opening that the start of HBP proved for this ship. I really don't agree that HBP killed the ship, infact, I think it made it a lot more possible. At the end of the 5th book, most of the Honks focused on a relationship that spring because Tonks is guarding him, and find a scrawny 15/16 year old beautiful. Then, of course, she not awed by his fame, and cares for the real him in a matter of milliseconds... bull fucking shit. The only fic I've read that takes a plausible approach, is that Birthday Boy by LizardLaugh or soemthing.

Book 6 however, provided you a emotionally reeling Tonks (from both Sirius's death [assumed] and Remus's rejection.) Coupled with scenes that have the possibility of becoming intimate in fandom, you get the possibility of a romantic entanglement (not a healthy or very positive one in the beginning, but at least possible)

I've never read a good H/T. Summer of Change was the best one I've read and even that was only almost average. They all start in Privet, and have Tonks cry entirely too much.

 

Bleh. Sure it's possible to write a fic from that new dimension to Tonks' character. But frankly I'd rather read about a Harry/Ginny soul bond than an "emotionally reeling Tonks."

I'm one of the many that looked at Tonks character after OotP and then liked her. JKR fleshing out her character into what she did in HBP was so far off every extrapolation made from OotP that to be honest, if book 6 revealed Tonks had a dick and was a guy, it would have been less of a character change for me than what she actually did with HBP!Tonks.

And I would've liked Harry/Tonks M/M slash more than the Remus/Tonks bits in HBP.

But seeing as how this topic got necroed after well over a year in the grave, I will add that Crys' Scion of Gryffindor is another long completed HONKS fic. I doubt Darius will like that one either, but the ship's not dead.

 

What nonjon said!! OotP introduces this fun loving, intelligent witch with a great bubbly personality, if a bit clumsy. Many people read that and thought "what a cool character." I'll admit OotP! Tonks had the main characteristics that I look for in a potential girlfriend.

Then came HBP and that likable Tonks got thrown out the window. All we see in HBP is an angst-ridden Tonks. Some how I can't get accept that.

But then again HBP anally reamed other characters as well.

Where there any good ones? Its a pairing I've been interested in, but a lot of them are open to cliche overload or just angsty post-war smut.

 

As far as I can tell, "A Black Comedy" is not even Honks in the slightest sense. It's not even a Harry/Multi fic. There are no pairings at all. I don't count a few sexual flings with Tonks as a relationship.

But it is Harry's character, as well as the general humor and light tone of the fic that makes it such a classic.
