Why do all the stories that want to give Harry a more dignified first name use Harold? Harry is more commonly used to shorten the extremely popular English name Henry. This can be seen in the case of Diana's second son, Prince Harry.

So, a five letter name to shorten...a five letter name? Sure makes sense to me, brah.

I would've thought Harry's name would've been Potter Law, but I didn't see it. Something along the lines of...

Harry's name is Harry. Not Henry, not Harold. Harry. You only are permitted to change it when Harry's undercover/in-hiding. He, however, is still referred to as Harry everywhere else and when writing "said Harry" after dialogue. End of.

Fanfiction is only a hobby if you write it. If you just read then it's a pastime.

I recall reading a story where Harry's full name turned out to be "Heron."

    It was rather strange.

This is just another problem that can be placed at JK's feet, if I remember correctly she wrote Harold, what the fuck are the other writers gonna do but follow, especially since 90- 99.99% of them don't give a fuck.

Also: It speaks to our interest in the canon HP world when this is the top thing in General Discussion. Why the fuck do we even have this forum section anymore?

Don't forget about Lily being a shortened form of Lilith. (And not to mention 'Tiger-Lily' nickname and a tiger animagus form)

    :(

I agree with OP. People like to lengthen his name in peerage and nobility type fics, and to be honest reading that stuff is boring already, no need to it worse by naming him Harold/Hadrian/Harrison/Henry James Potter Black (Founders name) (Barony name) (Earl/Count name). Two pet peeves in one name.

Guilty as charged. But, lol, it's just an alias. Harry is still Harry. He doesn't use the name for anything other than fucking with people's heads.

That should still be legal according to DLP laws.

I get particularly annoyed by Harrison for some reason.

Is it not at all possible that his name is just that, Harry, and that it's not short for anything? Some people seem to think that's impossible.

It mostly only happens when people are trying to be Mr. Fancypants or something. Fics that involve lordships or politics and the like.

But I've grown used to it by now and my brain simply substitutes 'Harry' whenever I see something else.

Because they think it gives him a more...dignified first name.

Harold is a common English name as well, and Harry is its diminutive too.
