In fanfiction, I see a couple of different versions of why Harry's hair is unruly.

    1. It's curly - I know this can lead to utterly untamable hair. My own was this way until I grew it out.

    2. It has some sort of weird growing pattern - Again, I can see how this would happen. Cowlicks are areas of hair that grow in a different direction than the rest of it.

Or else they just don't attempt to explain it at all.

I don't know why I have been wondering about why his hair is the way it is, but do you guys have any opinions in the matter?

I guess because it is genetic, his father had the same type of hair. Canon-wise, JKR just wanted some way for Harry to have characteristics from both parents. The green eyes stood out-from his mom, and the jet black messy hair stood out-from his dad.

And in fanfiction, authors have different perspectives on what his 'unruly' hair looks like. Some believe it to be a mess of curls, and others think it sticks out in different angles. Eh, I don't know if this answers your question, but this is why I believe his hair is written the way it is.

I think it is possible he might have wavy hair. My own hair is really wavy and when it is short it is completely unmanagable. It doesn't look nice until my bangs are at least long enough to chew on the ends.

Unless he ever grows it out in canon we'll never know if it's wavy, curly, or family cursed.

I guess I didn't phrase my question clearly. Sorry about that. What I meant was do you guys think that his hair is curly or just sticks out in several different directions?

Thats actually a good question but we never really get any info on how his hair looks like in cannon or Fandom, Every author has their way of imagining 'unruly' hair, maybe if Rowling described a bit more...

Actually, James messed his hair up on purpose.

    He messed it up more.

As to the original question, his hair grows out in different directions due to cowlicks.

I can attest to this fact as I have black, "unruly" hair as well. I have cowlicks that make my hair near impossible to tame unless it's short.

Indeed. When my hair starts to get longer, the cowlicks come into play and totally mess it up. When its short it doesnt have a problem. Only when it starts getting some length.

It's probably just really thick, mine isn't wavy or anything just extremely thick and it's untameable

The most Rowling ever described it is: "Hair that sticks out in every direction." So, I figure, cowlicks. I always just figured that the AK was like a permanent case of static hair.

It's probably like when you first wake up in the morning and all the hair on the back of your head sticks up.
    Only with Harry its natural.

^That's the best description. For us poor guys, a comb is powerless against it.

^Which is the reason why I get my hair chopped off regularly. Having hair like that is just too much of a hassle. With a buzz cut, all you have to do is just make sure it's stil there, instead of spending days trying to get it to behave.

I can barely remember what having short hair is like, but I know for sure that mine was described as "unruly" on more than one occasion. Now all I have to do is remind myself not to sit on it. Yeah, its that long.

Short hair is a bugger to try and tame - I feel sorry for poor Harry. :D
