Incorruptible had Healer Harry. /me points at sig.

I probably didn't really explore the profession all that much, but there's always more possibilities to come in the future, 'cause I kinda like the setting at St Mungo's I made, before, you know, zombies ensued. I liked the idea of Healer Harry 'cause of the saving people thing, a sort-of natural extension that still allows him to be a bit of a badass in his own right, especially if he was written full-blown Dr House style, lol. In Incorruptible there's like two paragraphs devoted to various ways Healer spells can be used to torture someone, as examples of my belief of Healer Harry that can be just as scary fun, but in a different way.

And also, much like how I have a different chick be the lead chick role in my HP fics, I'll change up the jobs for Harry too. I've done Auror, I've done Cursebreaker (Or, future Cursebreaker), and Healer, and next up's Hogwarts Professor. All pretty standard, but still fun fun.

I wrote a fic where Harry worked for the Spirit Division of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures but it wasn't very good. It was called To Gaze into Death’s Shadow and mostly consisted of a linked series of fight scenes where Harry (and sometimes Ron and Hermione) fought a range of monster's I'd labelled as 'spirits' for the purpose of the fic. It had a plot but not much of one.

Still, ghost hunter might be an interesting job if written well.

I had toyed around with the idea of Potion Master Harry. Then I decided it would work much better if I just had Harry run/work at an Apothecary instead of being an all out Potions Master. That or he gets an apprenticeship. It would be difficult to jump to Potions Master when he didn't really display a real talent for it in school. He'd have to really work at it.

Stop me if this has been done before...

Say that the goblins seized Harry's assets after the whole Gringotts mess and leave Harry relatively broke. From there you could go the kinda cliche route of Harry salvaging the Basilisk from CoS for a decent sum of gold. Afterwards he realizes there is real profit in rare potions ingredients so he either gets hired by an Apothecary to hunt rare ingredients that would be dangerous to get. Or you could have him be an apprentice to whomever bought the Basilisk ingredients, but because he is the apprentice he has to do all the leg work for rare ingredients. This way you get the action and thrill of the hunt while having this pretty unique profession in a branch of magic that hasn't really been explored too often.

I read one a few years ago where Harry became a master at warding. He wasn't a complete 100% badass at everything else, though he was good at other stuff too. But Warding? He was the best.

I liked it because I thought it was a good profession for canon!Harry in that Harry seemed to be the sort who'd want to be able to get safely away from the Press without having to use Fidelius, or put up protections, or break down other wards, or hide, or whatever. I thought it fit, or at least it seemed to fit nicely into the context of the story.

He wasn't bad at it- despite Snape's bias, Harry cleared an Exceeds Expectations. That said, he missed the NEWT year of training and probably would be too popular to return to school.

I'd recommend not taking away the 'push' of the story- crushing debt to the goblins- by making the Basilisk parts recoverable. Sure, he could get some money for the fangs that are left, but the bulk of the body has been rotting in a dank dungeon for five years. This will afford him a backup weapon and just enough spending money to live.

He could apprentice to an alchemist with a dark rep who doesn't get to publish his innovations because they're so unhinged. If this is part of Harry trying to escape his fame, he might approach the alchemist/harvester under a cover identity. The reason for him hooking up with the unsavory alchemist: anyone upstanding would be paranoid to hire a young man without credentials right after a war ends, whereas the Knockturn motto is 'ask only what you need to know, because having the wrong knowledge can get you killed'. How many former Snatchers might be lurking about, desperate to escape capture but needing to build a life? Harry could even call himself Scabior.

This would be another pressure point to drive the story; Harry is getting to know the underworld with the guidance of this 'Anti-Flamel', which may prove useful later if Harry decides to return to 'proper' society, but he's always at risk of being discovered and handed over to the low-lifes who flourished during the Dark Ministry period.

At the same time, Harry might find the idea of getting the Mastery to be the ultimate 'up yours' to Snape. He's motivated by a vision of returning to Hogwarts to visit McGonagall, ready to shove his mastery in the face of the dead man's portrait. At some point he'd realize that this is a lame teen-agers revenge fantasy, but the most interesting journeys start on a bad assumption.

[just letting the rabbit run- do with it what you like]

Edit @Cheddartrek: Wasn't that in Larceny, Lechery and Luna Lovegood by Rorschach's Blot?

I read one fic which I can't identify from memory where Sirius Black was a magical firefighter before going to Azkaban. It made me think that it would be a very Harry job to do, with a lot less paperwork and more suited to Harry's personality than Auror work.

The only one that's not complete crap from the top of my head.

I've read a few stories with a Harry working as a healer, most of them are bland but if you search for post Hogwarts and Voldemort stories you'll come across a few soon enough.

There was this story I remember where Harry opened up and ran an orphanage/kids home. I enjoyed it as it was a very fell good story.
