I'm sorry if this comes accross as stupid to some people -- said in advance.

But while I read through HBP and DH again this past weekend/couple of days I was thinking that it seemed more like JK Rowling wanted to do a seven-book series as more times it seemed to me like that the Sixth book if done correctly could've been the final one if a few bits were done in OOTP instead, but I''m just curious on what other people think.

-Except for the coming of age/breaking the trace which I just remembered. :)

And I'm an idiot who can only write run-on-sentences in a thread which concerns a topic that could've been dealt with in that one Official DH thread if done correctly and it could have been the final one, but I'm just curious on what other people think too.

While adding a useless post with insulting me, you could of atleast added something contributive to the topic. =/

Anyways, I looked for five minutes for the DH official topic and couldn't find it, probably because I'm multitasking though.

If you had bothered reading a few stickies, you would know that this board essentially loathes HBP, and doesn't thinks much of DH either.

If you didn't know this, then you are an idiot.

If you knew this and posted this waste anyway, you're an idiot and a troll.

But let me humor you. Why do you think HBP, (and I'm not as big a hater of that book as many others here) was enough to end the series? And what do you mean by "done correctly"? Do you mean the change of storyline from out of the blue sappy teenage romance to something concrete, like Harry's struggle to get up to his own feet, learning something to make sure he survives the coming war?

Or do you mean him getting hot and heavy with the Patil twins, Romilda Vane, and Lavender Brown(after getting Ron and the rest of the Weasleys killed) and then ruling the empire with Lord Vader?

Edit: And if you meant something else entirely, like the length of the books, the answer would still be no. Couldn't have been done in less than 7 books imo.

Idiotic posts deserve the responses they get. Grow some skin, eh?:facepalm

Since I may as well offer an opinion: I think that completely ignoring the existence of HBP & DH is the order of the day if you want to find a more suitable conclusion to the series.

I think I've read that somewhere before...

I do love how most people seem to be jumping all over the new guy for asking a perfectly relevant HP question on a HP fanfic board. Sure it could have been formated a bit better, but fuck that, we're DLP and we're hardcore. Lets show how well we fit in on this board by ragging on some new guy contributing half relivant topics to this board.

In answer to the question that really isnt that stupid.

I agree it probably could have been done in 6 books but probably would have felt a little rushed. Also it was obvious she really wanted Dumbledore dead so it was Harrys mission alone, and killing him off and having Harry kill Voldemort all in the one book would seem a little rushed.

I gathered some people didn't like HBP/DH from some comments, but taking like five-ten people's word on a forum this size is a bit silly, so that's why I posed the question, different opinions and all that.

I know my grammar/writing was horrible when writing, but mostly because I don't see the point in writing properly since I didn't think I'd be graded on it.

What I meant by six books is that HBP seemed more like a filler book, except for the Horcruxes and the end basicallly, and the killing Dumbledore, and what I honestly meant was Voldemort - being a supposed evil genius - could've gave Draco the task a year earlier, distracting Dumbledore from the prophecy at the same time and to get rid of him, same with, etc.

I just really meant that some if not most of the events could've been added to OOTP but it seemed like they were seperated because OOTP was already long enough and JK Rowling wanted to do seven books.

^ I gave valid reasons in my post. And in case I misunderstood, I even followed up with valid questions concerning her reasons for her questions. It was not because she is a newbie.

Edit : Ninja'd by OP with a sane post.

Response to the said post: Yes, I also think HBP seems more like a filler book. The whole 'learning Tom Riddle's life' stunt that Dumbledore pulled was a bit out of proportion. I think the idea was the 'build-up'. All along, we are learning about how Voldemort became the person he is now, and in the end, suddenly, we find that it was much bigger than that. We now know his secret to immortality. Sounds silly, I know, but that's what I think.

Also, him giving the task to Draco a year earlier. I think that could be attributed to his and Dumbledore's duel at the ministry. Voldemort has always been too confident in his own abilities. Maybe he though Dumbledore was weak after all these years, but when he faced him in a duel, his illusions were shattered. Now, he knew he had to take out Dumbledore ASAP, which was why he entrusted the task to Draco, serving the double purpose of punishing the Malfoy family after Lucius's failure in the ministry.

Sure, it is a fairly relevant post, but look at the post itself. It contains nothing except saying I think that it could have been just 6 books. No real reasons why. No explanations or expanding points, just a short post asking what people thought.

As for the question in hand, I think that the series needed to be 7 books if we are keeping the first 5 the same. There's just no way in my opinion should could have made a book 6 that had a reasonable amount of pages and ended it properly. Personally I think book 6 could have been pretty good.

There were a few main things that needed to be done better I think. 1) This is the most important point, Harry needs to learn some actual magic. It's why so many fanfics diverge after the 5th book, if you just learned you're destined to have a fight to the death don't you think you should start preparing. 2) The memories about the Horcrux's need to be shortened. I liked the idea behind this, but there was just too much non-important info. 3) The Horcrux's need to be introduced earlier on in the books, or at least hinted at. I can understand Harry not knowing, but I think Dumbledore should have figured it out earlier, and the reader should have had some hints at it. I don't mind the idea of Horcrux's really, but the fact that it was pulled out of left field bothered me. 4) Hermione should not be a bossy little cunt in the book, and instead should help Harry. 5) Better romance.

Anyway off the top of my head those are the main corrections that I would make, but I still think a 7th book was necessary, although that could have been done differently as well. For more opinions read this thread .

And of course I was ninja'd. OP though, something like this
means you won't last long here. Use proper grammar and spelling to the best of your ability.

It seems pretty silly to assume that she originally meant to write six books, when we learn from the first book that there are 7 years at Hogwarts.

Or at least close to it.

Nothing too blatant. Sometimes you can get away with the occasional mixups and runons. Your first post in this thread made us apprehensive.

A newbie, with barely any posts? Posting a run-on sentence? Dear god its another 13 year old with a 1st graders grasp of the English language!

But obviously that isnt the case judging by your subsequent posts.

Addressing the comment about not caring, its good to get in the habit of using proper English spelling and grammar skills. Makes it much easier for school as well as giving the appearance of professionalism.

    On topic:

HBP. Hrm. I think it was always intended to be a 7 part series. While there are portions of HBP that are kind of eyebrow raising(i.e. YEAH! ROMANCE OUT OF NOWHERE) it generally built up the atmosphere as well as the climb to the climax of Harry's story.

Oh no his mentor is dead. WHAT WILL HAPPEN NOW!?

    That kind of thing.

Hmm I guess an analogy(that probably doesnt really work but I'll go with it) is book 1 to 3 it was a "monster of the week" story. Here is the intro, build up, climax, epilogue. 4-7 lengthen that format because now there was the big bad hovering over it.

While Middy's thread is amusing (I'm sure he could make a similar thread for DH if he ever got the inclination), I personally thought HBP and DH weren't that bad. Sure, there are legitimate criticisms to be made, and they could have been better. However, they were still enjoyable to read.

Yes, it would be possible to write the books as you describe (move horcrux revelation to end of OotP, kill Dumbledore off near end of OotP or beginning of the final book) but the problem would be pacing.

For a satisfying resolution we really need to feel like things get bad before they get better.

If HBP was skipped we probably wouldn't really feel this. The victory would feel a bit like "well, I guess Voldemort wasn't that much of a threat after all".

:fireFucking rage. It's Could Have, dumbass. And yes, that goes for Admins and whoever else does this shit.

Oh irony, thy handle is Nae'blis. And you even corrected a different fuck-up, apparently.

You thought wrong. Not to put too fine a point on it, but this is DLP, and DLP cares about that sort of thing, because it's exactly this type of laziness that makes countless other boards (1) rage-inducing, and (2) perfect for juvenile and retarded cunts.

I often fuck up my posts because I'm often typing on a smart-phone. Nevertheless, I try very hard to get my grammar and spelling up to scratch. For future reference, the least you can do is make the attempt, mmkay?

Is this how you approach everything you do? Well, you're not getting a letter grade for it, so I guess there's no reason to do it in a remotely coherent manner . . . :facepalm

Ensuring that your posts are clear and easily understood through the use of proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation, as well as transparent syntax and diction demonstrates to us (your audience) that you care enough about the topic that you would like us to take equal care in our replies. On the other hand, by lazily splattering words all over the page without proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation, you are telling us that you don't really give even half a shit about the topic, you just wanted to hear the sound of your own voice, metaphorically speaking. That being the case, go splatter your diarrhea-of-the-pen in your diary - that's what those are for.

Why should we care if you clearly don't?
