That's not even slightly a dog. That's more like a rhino-warthog. Dammit. D: Are imagined beasts completely out?

So Ched, I'm really curious now - what IS the story behind this guy needing a game without any animals in it?

I think that might count as a dog, yeah. Especially if it makes a sad noise when it dies.

He's not a gamer Palindrome, and he can't... hmm, he can't disconnect his emotions from the game versus real life? Apparently, to him, killing a dog in a video game 'feels just like' someone has done it for real.

Killing a dog in a video game = watching someone kill one for real. At least in terms of the emotional punch it hits him with. Apparently.

Also dude works with abused pets on a regular basis as his job / career.

And yet no compunctions about killing humanoids? Huh.

He has problems with that too. Ideally he'd prefer a game that didn't involve ever hurting anything. But he's able to deal with harming humanoid enemies because people make choices to hurt other people. An enemy human chose to attack you. Animals don't make conscious decisions like that.

And, to be honest, I get that attitude... but in real life, not in games.

Does he have a mental health issue perhaps?

Has he tried kids games, or just puzzle or strategy games? He's not going to have much luck in action games, but there are some great games out there that don't rely on combat at all.

I know it's not an RPG, but has he tried a game like Portal? I think it's one of the best games for non-gamer types.

Portal 1 an 2 should be a great option, albeit not an RPG.

Stardew Valley is an RPG where you don't really harm animals, IIRC although you do harm bugs.

Recettear is also mostly stuff like goblins, goo and bees. Can't remember dogs and stuff per se, but neither this nor Stardew Valley do have multiplayer.

Not sure how much help this is though.

AFAIK the last video game he played (that wasn't a card game) was on the Atari.

Have you considered Space Engineers? It's not exactly an RPG, but you can play it in co-op with multiple people and shooting anything is entirely optional. It's been early access for a long time, but it gets regular updates and is way more fleshed out than most early acces titles.

The only other game I could think of is Don't Starve Together, but it does have hounds:
