My laptop has given up on me, I have no idea what happened. One minute it was fine the next it shut down on me. I thought it was because it just go too hot.. but... I've left it off for hours, charged it up... still I get nothing.

I turn it on. The Dell logo comes on and that loads for a few seconds.

It comes on Windows Error Recovery, I pick Start Windows Normally. But even if I pick Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt. I still get nothing.

The Microsoft Corporation logo comes on, and that loads. It keeps on loading, until it comes to a black screen. Eventually the mouse pops up.

Then it just stops. I can move the mouse around, but other than that nothing.

I've tried the Launch Repair Set Up, that does its thing, trying to repair whatever has happened, but that still doesn't help any.

So, anyone know what the heck is going on?

Sounds to me like it's your Windows install has gone tits up for whatever reason. Create an Ubuntu LiveCD, boot into it and backup your shit, reinstall XP/Vista/whateverthefuck.

Your laptop is okay. If I was physically around I could fix Windows, it's not something I can write instructions on how to do. Your best choice is to, as Oz said, use an Ubuntu LiveCD to backup your music and such, then reinstall Windows.

Startup Repair is worse than useless.

Ubuntu LiveCD? Would I have to burn that to a disk, or go out and buy it? What is it exactly?

Does it let me access all my files and such?

Thanks guy for the help. I miss my Dell laptop. My dad's Toshiba has an evil touchpad.

Ubuntu is a linux based operating system that is entirely free. You just download it, burn it to a disc, boot from the disc, select "Try Ubuntu without any changes to your system" and backup whatever you need to. Then reintall your Windows OS.

    Awesome. Downloading it now.

So do you think it was something I did/downloaded that fucked up Windows? Or does this sometimes happen randomly?

Did you do anything to your video drivers/video card lately?

Sounds like what happens to me when I turn on the wrong monitor expecting to see a screen when I have the output going to the other monitor. Try holding control down as you boot windows after the error recovery screen if you have an Nvidia card, if not then *shrug*

Does Control-Alt-Delete work when it boots? If so, see if explorer.exe is loaded.

Ubuntu is up and working, and I have put most of my crap into my external hard drive. Though it's only got about 52GB and I have much much more crap than that.

Now I will be looking around the house, and in boxes, for my copy of Windows Vista. Hopefully it came with the laptop...
