Okay, I know that the very premise of the 'Hogwarts reads Harry Potter and Nymphadora Tonks' Amsterdam Adventure' cliche is utter crap, but...well, I'm bored, so I might as well dig through this cliche. :facepalm

There's got to be some decent ones out there, right? Like there are some fairly readable Azkaban!Harry stories? Right?

Preferably ones where Harry isn't exactly stable from his upbringing, and freaks everyone out in the Great Hall/RoR/wherever when it's discovered that he's not as 'Golden' as they thought? (Or use the whole 'Hogwarts reads' as a plot device to tell the actual A/U story of Harry being different, instead of using a traditional storyline structure?)

    Can anyone help me out?

    I mean, REALLY?

I can't even explain how disgusting and stupid the idea of "reading the books" fics is in my eyes. It's an excuse for lazy fuckers to c&p tons of HP canon into ff.net while adding their own pinch of soul destroying shit.

Was sort of looking for stories unlike that, which breaks that mold.

Ya know, diamond in the cow shit, and all.

Fictional by Dark Syaoran features Harry that reads Harry Potter Series in its first chapter.

He finds out that all his life is just a lie, a work of fiction written by the hand of mere human named JK Rowling.

I'm certain that making that comparison just incurred some serious karma.

I won't say what kind, but if you hear anything that sounds like a falling meteorite, you might want to step out of your vehicle/place of residence and run (faster than you have ever run before).

    :)

Meh. You can find any of these "characters read the books' fics with a simple search of FFN. They are basically all the same. Only worth reading if you are really, really bored; or if you can't find your copy of a book its basically all there on these kind of fics.

One thing I do find hilarious though are the fics where the Marauders read POA, say that even if Sirius is guilty he will still be their friend and brother blah blah blah stop this future from happening yadda yadda... and then they promptly sever all ties to Peter when he is revealed to be the traitor.

It's a cheap ripoff of the time-travel genre, created by and for lazy authors who can't be bothered to come up with anything even remotely original. Its premise is a huge deus ex machina which kills any suspense. In contrary to most time-travel fics the authors don't even bother to explain how or why the books suddenly appear. It'll be more believable if Lily would suddenly turn into a seer, giving a detailed prophecy about the upcoming events than this.

I'd say it's the only genre without any good readable even remotely tolerable fics.

You might want to start out with something a little easier to find.

    1. Proof of the existence of God.
    2. Free energy.
    3. A working perpetual motion machine.
    4. That other sock.

I don't know of any decent 'Harry/Marauders reads...', but I rather enjoyed Twisted Biscuits 'One Flogged Horse (aka An Overused Plotline)' - or at least, what she actually wrote of it. She seems to be out of the fanfiction game now, sadly. Anyway, it might be worth a read; rather than Harry or the Marauders, it's Tom Riddle reading the books, and adjusting his plans accordingly.

I keep seeing this on some decent authors favorites:

    http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6664082/1/
A mysterious red-headed man travels back to the summer before Harry's 5th year to change the future and save countless lives. A reading the books fic. Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter and am not affiliated with Scholastic Inc or its subsidiaries.Harry Potter - Rated: T - English - Drama/Humor - Chapters: 36 - Words: 473,321 - Reviews: 1103 - Updated: 8-24-11 - Published: 1-17-11 - Harry P.

I have no idea if it's any good, but since people who's writing I enjoy seem to like it, it shouldn't be terrible at any rate.

I'm following that one: It's a lot better than most any other of the genre, and more likely to be finished at the rate the author's going. The characterization is much closer to canon than usual, and the author does seem to have their aftermath story planned out well.

But it's still little more than reactions and comments on things that Have Yet to Happen.

And I dislike the Grangers immensely.

Anyway, there was (once) a decent one of these on FF.net that got taken down because the author is a self-proclaimed coward. A Little Light Reading was a very plotty Snape centric fic where he is forced to begin reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone during the last few weeks of Harry's first year at Hogwarts. Snape often only sat down for a chapter at a time before taking off to go do something or another - bringing an actual story to the story, for once. Dullastacks removed the fic before she finished it (though there are download links, if you can stand remotely likable Snape - she's a Snape/Malfoy(s) fan), claiming that she had gotten published and needed to take her fics down. I'd've given that fic a 3/5.

It's bad. It's better than most (because of grammar and spelling), nevertheless it's bad.

It begins days before the start of book 5 with all characters (including the Malfoys) assembled in the Room of Requirement, where future!canon!George starts a reading of said book. Dumbledore believes him at once, Snape starts to realise the truth about Harry's childhood, etc.

Just read the first chapter and you know half of the genre - with the other half being "The Marauders read ...".

    BLATANT SELF-PROMOTION:

It's funny you're talking about this idea, because I just started writing something of this precise genre. Normally they all suck, but I'm taking it in what I think are pretty original directions - including literally no excerpts from the original text.

Forget about Hogwarts, I'd totally read that myself. Just imagine the kind of things that could go on!

I'd write it, but I have absolutely no idea how to write it.

I shamefully admit that I only have very basic, bare-bones knowledge of Amsterdam, with its hookers and legal pot.

    That's all. :(

    Or the other way around.

There's a line somewhere in the trilogy where Harry wonders how he would act as a normal angsty teenager. I'd love to see his reaction if he finds out, lol.

    Any timeline on this?

Actually pretty good. I wish it wasn't abandoned. Anyone know any other stories like this?

I posted a bit in the 500 club, but I'm working on the Girl story for right now.
