Seriously? There are people who haven't seen this word before?

Yup. It really is a prime example of Sturgeon's Revelation at work.

Well, except that the crap/quality ratio takes a drastic turn for the worse when slash is involved. Probably has something to do with niche demographics.

By condemning this thread as a "circlejerk", you just actively participated in the discussion about slash. :sherlock:

And there goes ninety percent of everything on the internet.

There are a lot of well-established ideas out there that people discuss anyway, just because they want to discuss them. Also, I don't think anyone in this thread was really believing they'd turn anyone else against slash by participating in this conversation. But, hey, if it will make you feel any better...

    Stop having fun, you guys!

Actually, the deadline for the October WTF fics is coming up. Judging will be based on shock value, quick factor and inspiration.

This is a real thing, by the way. We've had the group for a while, and I'm pretty sure everyone has several hundred words down at the moment.

    :3

    Profit.

Lungs my friend you beat me there, oh well, I've never written poetry for girls... well at least mine made them happy instead of scaring the shit out of them. Also in case you haven't heard, Kaleidoscope is pretty terrible. :p

I was going to participate in this thread, but I felt more comfortable enjoying it vicariously from afar.

For me personally, it comes down to why slash is there.

Let's ignore the crappy, poorly written fics to start with and take what's left over. Most Slash will probably come under the Romance genre and that will be the focus.

When I read a hetero romance fic I can get all giddy, emotional and all that. That's largely what that genre is about and why I'd read it. And even though I don't really get disgusted by homosexuality (My highest Meatspin spin count was 1000!), I also can't particularly get that warm fuzzy feeling watching Harry and Draco gallop off into the sunset that I might get with a straight pairing.

Leaving the romance genre and moving onto the more typical Action orientated genre that has a gay protagonist, well, you start to feel "What's the purpose of that?". It starts to feel like the author is trying to make a point - that he accepts gays, and a gay protagonist should be no different to a straight protagonist. But unfortunately, to me at least, it tends to feel very 'in your face'. It'd be the same as say, writing a fic where Harry was born a blonde instead.

When it comes to stories where other characters are gay, it certainly doesn't really affect anything to me. Like I just recently got up to date in Prince of the Dark Kingdom and that has Sirius/Remus as a side pairing. But it doesn't feel out of place, nor does it detract at all from the story for me.

There are a few fics that I have read with gay protagonists that I have enjoyed a little bit. The only one I can recall at the moment would be a unique Naruto fic called the Teamwork series. Essentially, it has a Naruto/Sasuke/Sakura threesome pairing. Despite the obvious Naruto/Sasuke aspect of it, I never really felt bored, annoyed or disgusted. The reason is despite the fact the fic is based around their relationship, it doesn't go for that emotional/giddy tone at all. The NaruSasu rivalry type interaction was always interesting to read - even when them trying to fight over who gets to stick their dick in the other's arsehole first.

In other words, it wasn't a traditional romance fic. And the fact the two protagonists both had cocks actually added somewhat to the fic - because it was fun to see two guys who are seme (on top) type people, try to fight for dominance in their relationship.

So one of the first Harry Potter fics I ever read was called The Heir of Corvus. It was a reasonably well-written story (iirc, given I was twelve), with a gay relationship between Harry's two father figures. This, unsurprisingly, progressed into Harry also finding his sexuality with another boy: Terry Boot. I don't understand how I read this at the time, because in retrospect I remember being childishly homophobic (twelve in North Carolina), but apparently I enjoyed the story enough to continue through a sequel or two.

It, to this day, is still the only slash series I've ever been able to stomach. The reason for this?

Because despite all of its awful cliches and terrible drama, Harry's sexuality developed plausibly. He had two, nurturing father-figures who were obviously a good match and he found his own equal in Terry. This wasn't a sub/dom role, with far too much kinky smut and far too little plot. I'll still pass over the sex scenes, but I'd probably enjoy my second slash fic ever if authors could write a plausible development for Harry's sexuality within a plot, rather than as the plot.

Despite the fact that I generally dislike slash, etc... Asuka is one of the best relationship writers I know of.

May be of mild interest to some people: I've recently begun exploring gay fiction in original publised work, and it seems to be almost exactly the same as slash. That is to say, senseless chick-lit style bored housewife porn, with no real change from a Mills&Boon bodice ripper than the different number of cocks in sex scenes. This applies to both gay and lesbian 'literature', although the gay novels seem much more easily inclined towards a pornographic nature.

If it's classified as gay fiction, it is utter bollocks. If it's described as fiction or a genre such as fantasy, sci-fi, horror, crime, thriller, suspense, or even romance that has gay characters, themes, or plots, it's as good as any other writing.

I imagine it's something similar to the often overly sexual nature of many gay clubs (again, mostly aimed at men), likely an overcompensation for the repressed nature of homosexuality in most of society, no matter how accepted people claim it is. Speaking as someone who has many gay friends of both genders, and lives with a lesbian, this seems to actually cause a great deal of psychological damage

They end up utterly convinced that their only measure of worth to others is their sexuality, like the emotional prostitution that often damages the self-esteem of women and teenage girls. I've seen too many people destroy themselves because they feel there's nothing for them in life but the obligation towards sex of dubious appeal. A friend of mine recently slept with a slightly older guy, only to be devastated afterwards when the guy tried to pay him: apparently he'd decided that my friend was a rent boy.

Tl;dr - gay men are inclined to whorish tendencies with all the emotional damage that entails. Homosexuality is even more fascinating in literature than other relationships are, but authors ruin it by making characters slutty bitches, like the protagonists of the crap read by lonely middle-aged women.

Honestly, I've never read a slash fic where it is the main protagonist who is gay, its just not my type of story. However I've read stories where there is a side pairing that is gay. One story was on FFA.net it had something to do with Gryffindor's ghost and was a Harry/tonks main pairing. they just mentioned Remus was gay a couple of times.

Another was on ff.net Harry had moved to america, found a way to pull sirius to this side of the veil, was in a 4-way relationship with tonks, hermione, and the whore. Sirius was with an OFC, and ron at one point, and remus, and remus and snape. Oh and they all decided to all become potters and have a giant orgy where Harry bangs all the women(including sirius' new wife) and sirius all the dudes.

Now where any of these stories any good? NO, but they passed the time. As long as there is a slash thread open, can someone tell me why ff.net doesn't have separate het and slash categories? or if there is a plugin that does it what it is.

    Thanks for reading,
    Original Gentleman

Moooommm! CareOtters won't come out of the closet! He's in the closet and he won't come out!

Leaving aside the horrid, horrid descriptions of the sexual goings-on (goings-on that you apparently deemed good enough to read and not skip), who exactly is "the whore"?

Just because I didn't skip the actual smut scenes in no way declares that I thought they were good. Think train wreck, horrible thing you just can't stop looking at. As for who 'the whore' is I thought all of us newbies were suppose to read the Must read links for any new member? It was mentioned in the dlp-isms thread(https://forums.darklordpotter.net/showthread.php?t=1186). 'The Whore' is Ginny.

You’re a bit late, bro. We ditched blatant character bashing a while back. Calling Ginny ‘the whore’ is as terribad as calling Dumbledore ‘Dumbles’. And lol, the DLP-isms thread was created in 2006; it’s mostly out of date now.

Faux-pas faggot, don't ever try French again, seriously. Oh and don't blame four-year-old posts for you being a piece of shit. Lastly, using "the whore" means you want to fit in so bad you actually took four-year-old threads to heart and rampantly followed what they said. :facepalm

EDIT: Not going to delete this, that'd be hiding, but I acknowledge it was a really stupid post.
