I don't really know if this is the right forum, but don't you guys think, that Sauron's Ring is quite similar to Voldemort's Horcruxes? Maybe Rowling even copied the idea from Tolkien? If this was disscussed before, then sorry.

Their are definite similarities between the One Ring and a Horcrux. Sauron can't be truly killed -his spirit lives on- until the ring is destroyed. Also, it is incredibely difficult to destroy the ring, just as it is difficult to destroy a Horcrux.

I've always thought that she got the idea to put her name as 'J.K.Rowling' from J.R.R.Tolkien. I wouldn't be surprised if she based some of her ideas off the man who set the standard for fantasy. Hell, I'd do the same thing.

In that thing you call a closet. Better watch out,
She put her name as J.K Rowling to be taken more seriously. If she put her full name, she was afraid people would not buy a fantasy book written by a female author. So, she put J. K Rowling, where the gender was ambiguous.

But yeah, there are definite similarities. The main one being that when you put on Sauron's ring, thoughts of power and greed take you over. And when you put on a Horcrux, or hold it too long, bad thoughts come to you.

there are some similarities (both the horcruxes and the ring bind a spirit/soul to the mortal plane) but also differences, as a horcrux only contains part of a soul and seeks to corrupt and reestablish itsself of the victims lifeforce (based on the diary) whereas the ring corrupts its user but with the ultimate goal of returning to its master. also the ring is described as amplifying one's natural power.

I don't know, she might have completely ripped the idea off. We never actually found out what any of the horcruxes intended to do upon attaining a physical form.

Chances are they would basically be another Voldemort, or they may have the instinct to resurrect the original Dark Lord then go back to being inanimate. After all, a horcrux is useless if its not hidden, and despite the advantages of having several Voldemorts running round, its not fulfilling its intended purpose of being a safe anchor for his soul (i.e. Its not safe, and its not hidden).

If the diary had succeeded in reviving itself chances are it would have brought back the original and then went back to being a normal horcrux. It did seem to hold him in reverence after all.

You know, there are these things called archetypes, themes, motifs, etc, that every author makes use of. A sinister object or person sowing disconentent and unhappiness amongst comrades isn't a Tolkien trademark. Especially, cold, evil objects like the amulet in HP7 and the ring in LOTR are pretty standard fare in fantasy settings.

Or did you expect the piece of Voldemort's soul to be cuddly?

    AHAHAHA

    *coughs*

    AHAHAHA

Seriously, most fantasy fiction just flat out rips off Tolkien, the man set the bar.
