I will second this to hell. Definitely one of the best classic horrors you could watch.

Agreed, Aekiel. I'm almost mad I didn't get to rec that first. :D

While we're on John Carpenter. In the Mouth of Madness is a pretty damn cool horror movie, too.

Most of what I wanted to recommend has already been done, but I feel Coraline and Paranorman are worthy additions to any horror list .Unconventional, thought-provoking and creepy in equal measures the horror in these movies is a lot more subtle as it catches you off-guard not in the jump-scare kind of way but the fact that something like this should be scary at all.

In addition to everything, these are just great movies.

The kafkaesque Cube (1997) is brilliant. It's got some great death scenes but where it really shines is creating an oppressive atmosphere and the nihilistic feelings that the revelation of what the origin of the titular cube brings.
There is a sequel but I wouldn't bother with it. It's got a much more complex cube and some unique deaths but it lacks the spirit that made the first shine.

8/10 would recommend for a spoopy time.

^ 100000 times yes. I can't believe I forgot about it. Cube Cube Cube Cube. I wouldn't say the first sequel is bad, but the first film does completely overshadow it (though Cube 2 does have some pretty cool mindscrew moments). Second sequel... don't touch it. They try keep the mystery while unveiling the mystery and it doesn't work.

Oh, how could I forget? Hellraiser was another fantastic horror film.

The original yes but it suffered from sequelitis that killed a lot of my goodwill for it.

The Thing was great though. Wilford Brimley is one of my favorite actors.

Watching The Babadook right now, in the dark, alone. Fuck me. Can recommend.

If video game recs make the cut for this Id recommend Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Five Nights At Freddy's. They're two of the only legitimately scary games I've ever played in my life.

The Orphanage is amazing, 11/10. I watch a lot of horror and it's my favourite film by far.

The first three Silent Hill games, if video games are included and you can get the originals. The HD remakes are godawful. For a TV series, Hemlock Grove was interesting for the first couple episodes, but I haven't watched beyond that yet.

I just watched 2014's Wyrmwood. It's pretty good. Australian post-apocalyptic flick. They have fun with some of the tropes of the the genres that inspire it. An impressive first effort and I hope to see more from them.
