I was just thinking that I'd like to find some fics that have Harry decide he doesn't like the way the Ministry runs things, doesn't like Voldemort's ideas for revolution, doesn't think Dumbledore's faction is much better, and decides to make his own side to take over, becoming a Dark Lord of his own ala "Ascension of the Scorpion Sorcerer", or to a lessor extent "Harry's Madness", both of which are abandoned.

Is there a list of stories of Harry becoming a Dark Lord without joining Voldemort somewhere on this site? I'd have expected it to be far more prominent on a site named "Dark Lord Potter".

 

Because there aren't enough quality fics to fill it. The "Dark arts" category fits nicely.

Look through that and quit being lazy. :|

 

Write it yourself.

 

Hopefully looking for such fics will be easier once the tagging system gets under way. For now just look through dark arts, and maybe tag what you find appropriately.

 

Because the premise sucks. I can't fathom how people can bear to read entire stories of Harry just killing and torturing people to fulfill this grand notion of being "Ruler of the World", complete with a cast a sycophants devoted to his will.

And the fact that most of these fics are just badly written 'dark-empowerment-fantasy' fics that preteen twits get off on, with barely enough characterization and good writing to fill a thimble.

 

It's not that it gets old, it's just that no one writes the other side; that is, no one writes Dark Lord Potter getting defeated. Which makes sense: it's Harry Potter fanfiction, and no one wants to read about the central character getting defeated.

 

It can be done well, assuming you don't go the Voldemort-patented CRUCIO CRUCIO CRUCIO route. One of my fics is basically Harry being a stealth Dark Lord, and I haven't really heard many complaints about it.

 

I've personally always wanted to see a fic where Harry goes down in a blaze of glory ala Scarface without drugs. He has the money, the power, and the respect, but his pride gets in the way of his success and he begins to make mistake after mistake, undermining everything he's worked for. Then, when the (insert: good guy) comes for him, he takes out as many as he can before they get him with sheer numbers. A story that depicts the rise and fall of that character would be pretty awesome, whether it was about him becoming a Dark Lord, or whatever the fuck.

Except, I could do without the scene where his sister goes batshit and tries to sex him up. Ugh.

 

That's the only reason I would read it. :/

 

The biggest downer in Dark Lord Harry fics, in my experience, is the mega-harem and stupid opposition. Not to forget the rushed characterisation that is often based around justifying Harry's behaviour by making Dumbledore and the Dursleys more evil in comparison.

I think that a fic based more around realistic recruitment, fighting and deception than torture and sex, while still not forgetting the latter actions, could turn into a pretty entertaining read.

 

I think the real question here is: how come there isn't a category for "Hagrid becomes a dark lord" fics?
