How do you imagine wand holsters look and works? I've got the imporession that most imagine a holster to work like the hidden blade in Assassin's Creed, but with a wand instead of a knife.

More or less. I am not sure if wand holsters are ever mentioned in canon, but in fanfiction they are usually described as strapped to the forearm, with a spell designed for easy retrieval. It's slightly different from the hidden blade since the wand comes completely out of the holster, but mostly the same.

It seems more fanon than canon, but realistically speaking, they have to keep their wands somewhere. Or is everyone using their pockets, despite what Moody was on about?

Wands are decently long. I really hate the idea of the fanfic wrist holster, seems incredibly annoying and cumbersome. I'm a fan of something like a sword scabbard, on your hip, only for your wand.

No, they aren't. Holsters is a thing of fandom.

I know that Newcomb have a different idea, picturing in What You Leave Behind.

Well, given that Harry's wand, for example, is 11" long and the distance between my wrist and the crook of my elbow is only about 10" I'd say wrist holsters are unlikely to work as usually described.

I've seen a few where the wand is shrunk, but I've always felt that magicking wands isn't really a thing that can happen. Admittedly, that's mostly from the fact that wands can't be repaired with magic (except with Elder Wand devhax), but I feel like it's not an unreasonable assumption.

So, maybe more like a gun holster, but with a wand? Or just use a nice deep pocket inside your robe.

    Or Velcro.

Across your back, poking over your shoulder like a fucking broadsword.

    ^ More like John McClane.

I figure it'd be much like a gun holster. So, on your waist, on your thigh, under your arm, all seem viable places to put it.

The wand wouldn't really fit on the wrist as some people here has already mentioned. I imagine that it's more something like a gun holster as Steelbadger mentioned.

In canon we see that Lucius Malfoys wand is part of his cane. Since we don't see everyone using cane's coupled with Moody's warning that the students shouldn't have them in their pockets (it must be based on something). It gives the impression (at least for me) that where you keep your wand can vary a lot from person to person.

I don't. The very idea doesn't appeal to me. Seems too muggly.

One doesn't have to shrink the wand in order for it fit on the wrist. Simply have a holster that is larger on the inside than the outside.

I dunno about this one; Hermione didn't seem to have any trouble keeping 101 Thing You Need On The Lamb in her purse thing in DH. The magically expanded tents didn't fuck with any magical item that was taken inside them either. I'd say it comes down to whichever way the author wants to play it.

I want to see a wizard who has their wand velcroed onto the inside of their sleeve though.

Likely a vaguely cylindrical pocket made of various materials based on how much money you spend on it.
Maybe with a clip or a button at the top to stop the wand from sliding out if you haven't paid for sticking charms or something similar.

Come to think of it, how bloody large are their pockets? Eleven inches is like just a bit shorter than a standard ruler, and I cannot for the life of me imagine how I'd put an entire ruler in my back pocket. Especially if I'm wearing jeans. Shit's gonna stick out and poke you in the back the entire time.

    Pocket dimension. No holsters required.

Yeah, but Harry was wearing Muggle jeans. Dude has a point.

I dunno, I imagine it could only have been while he's standing or moving. Sitting down with a ruler in your back pocket is maximum uncomfortable, to say nothing of laying down that way.

Additionally, there is a problem with keeping the wand 'within his robes', because by rights, there is no opening through which you can access it. It's not a cape (or a bathrobe), they are closed up front.

It's a curious detail -- I have to scan the books at some point, to see if we are given any further details on where wands might be kept on a person. Given the size, the standard fanon versions clearly do not work.

Some relevant quotes from the canon:

    Locations shown in canon:
    - Up a robe's sleeve
    - Inside a pocket of a robe (or another article of clothing)
    - On a belt
    - Inside a bag

    Thanks MoltenCheese, good quotes.

I can envision everything except Ron pulling a wand out of his back pocket while sitting down. Assuming he doesn't have a magically expanded back pocket, which he probably does not, just... imagine having a ruler in your backpocket, then trying to sit behind the wheel of a car. There's nowhere for it to go.

Maybe that's why it was so easy to break shortly thereafter. He'd been stressing it. ;)

Yeah, some of those I guessed (wand in school bag seems logical, for classes), others are strange because they contradict the supposed clothing ("put his hand into his robes" ... how?), should be uncomfortable (back pocket on a car seat, have you tried accessing something that's stowed away there in that situation? Massively awkward) or plain impossible (11''+ wand up a child's sleeve).

TL;DR: I dunno that Rowling thought too much about what she was doing with wands :/

It's probably the Jesuit schooling, but I've always pictured robes as more of a cassalb or soutane (uhhh...I can't remember what they're called normally, but they're like cassocks? The ankle-length robes with or without buttons that Catholic priests wear?) with maybe a chasuble-style over-robe on formal occasions (or for teachers). Depending on the tailoring, a cassalb could conceivably have an "inner" pocket (i.e. one inside or under the giant front pleat.
