Listen, I don't mean to be rude, and I REALLY don't know why it irritates me, but PLEASE:

    1) Capitalize appropriately. OotP, HBP...capitalize the first word of the sentence, and all proper nouns. It isn't 'otp', it's OotP, or even OOTP. Or just use 'Book 5'.

    2) Use commas in the right places.

    3) Use the spell checking.

I make typos and stuff myself, but for some reason, reading your posts in this thread gives me headaches. i don't mean to be an asshole or anything...i just...gah!

Edit: Arkeus: The word is DoM...Department of Mysteries, not dom.

    Sorry :/
It's true that i don't take the time to spell check, and i also cringe when i reread myself. I will try to do better. And yeah, it's normal to be irritated. I myself stopped reading quite a few fics for the very same reasons. Which is why i need to find a beta if i ever work up the courage to write.
    Thanks :)

Another rant: why do authors or fangirls believe it is a good thing for harry to love someone who looks like his mother?

And why, oh why, is draco witty and charismatic and of course snape is mysterious and his crappy childhood means he is good at heart. I mean, it's only somone who creates spell like sectusempra, and who *likes* the dark arts.

I know, I know. I'm beating this to death and I'll try not to post on this again after this, but since you asked:

"[H]is Patronus was too feeble to drive the Dementor away. All it did was hover, like a semi-transparent cloud, draining Harry of energy as he fought to keep it there" (PoA)

Draining Harry of energy...I'm looking for some sort of explanation about from some form of raw power energy but I can't find a more believable one.

Psst...if you're going to work on the quality of posts, capitalizing "I" and the beginning of proper nouns (ie names) goes a long way.

Hum... you might be right there. But it could also mean something else completely, like the theory that they channel magic, and how strong they are depends on how much they worked on the channel.

It could also mean that all wizard and witch develops power by force of will, and that the amounts he/she develop is constant. So either you are good enough to do the spell, and then you can cast it for hours, or else you aren't. In the case where you aren't good enough, you just have to either work your magic muscle, or else your control.

First, read the book. Luna got a Death Eater by blasting a fucking reductor in his face.

Also, in page 788 U.S versions hardback, Hermione asks what should they do? While the DE's are chasing them. Yeah, real fucking smart.

Also, Neville accidentally gets one when he hits the shelves with a stupefy. So, wrong again.

Also, she didn't use the body bind, Harry did. So, wrong again.

And he's not bad at wordless. Poppy said that the spell did a good deal of damage, even though wordless.

So I leave you with this, read the book.

Peter can do Animagus because his friends helped him. He also had necessary power. Honestly, AK is not that hard. Say spell, guy dies. Real power there. A patronus takes more power than that. Also, Barty Jr. was in the Inner circle, as was Peter. Voldie isn’t just going to take anyone.

I'd say that the AK takes a medium degree of power to cast. A child cannot cast it properly (without a lot of practice) on their first try. Perhaps an adult CAN cast it on their first try, but i would attribute that to the fact that they have grown intimately connected with their own magic.

That said, the Avada Kedavra does NOT require as much power as the Patronus, IMO, simply because it is not a spell that lingers like the Patronus does. You pretty much zap the person with a beam of light, and that is it. With the patronus, not only do you put a lot of power into conjuring it in the first lace, but you also have to put enough power into it such that it stays for a while.

Arkeus: Rostam is right. Read the battle scene properly, and you'll see that Hermione is really NOT effective as a fighter/tactican. She IS smart, there is no denying that. SHe knows a wide range of spells, ones that most of the people in her year might not ever know.

See...she knows these random spells...like the one that made the little sparrows or whatever attack Ron's scalp. Combat spells require, IMO, far more power than these little charms and transfigurations. And she does NOT excel in these. If she did, she would have continued to learn by herself in the 5th Book, and would not have advocated the DA.

In my opinion, she doesn't have the power/the instincts or the ability to fight a duel. She is a researcher, plain and simple. She might be able to beat Hogwarts students in duels because she can use charms and such to confuse them, but against a DE? She'd be crushed easily.

It seems like you're staunchly - and BLINDLY - defending Hermione, Arkeus. Please, read this fic all the way to Chapter 9 like i did yesterday, and focus on Hermione's personality. If you make it that far, you will understand EXACTLY why i despise her.

    Horst Pollmann's Work

In a few days, when i get the motivation to, i will post a series of quotes and scenarios from the book that should show you exactly why i despise her character. Understand this: I'm not trying to change your opinion, i'm just providing mine.

don't worry, i don't get offended at all. I may be wrong about the dom, it was in my memory that she had acted better than the others, but i may have to reread it.
Hum, i am surprised you think that transfiguration is easier than attacking spell, as i believe the most powerful offensive spells beside the ak are part transfiguration, part charms. i won't read the fic, simply because i have no desire nopt to like hermione :)
I am still searching for proof that hermione's patronus is an weaker than harry's -harry can defeat an hundred dementor when the dementor cannot attack him, but he isn't that much good when they are there as seen in Ootp.

oh well, i will reread certain passages in the books now, as it is way too easy to make a mistake... :)

When Harry fought the dementers on Privet Dr, he had just been punched in the face by Dudley.
As someone who got punched in the face I can say, it bloody hurts and it's hard to think.

To say he fought 100+ dementers after a night of fight and flight, also he was worried about Sirius being killed.
As Patroni rely on happy memories he hasn't exactly got many, add to that the fact he was learning for survival.

When the Bitch learnt the charm with the rest, it was in the Room of Requirement. She didn't have to learn facing real dementors or even Boggart dementors.

Also despite what a retard he can be in canon/fanfiction, the buck toothed minger is Not as powerful as Harry.

One of the things I hate in Fan Fiction is when they discount Harry, and give the fucking mudblood all the credit.
I hate the bitch as much as ginslut. I will be happy when the deathsheep finally catch up with them. You'd be amazed how many kitchen implements you can carry in all that wool.

After they're both slaughtered I will feed weasel to the acromantula.

    Litha

P.s praise Herman and the deathsheep might get you;)

    Deathsheep?
Shudder. Maybe i *should* be careful :p
I am not discounting harry. Harry is the will of the wizarding world. I am just annoyed that everyone seem to think hermione is weak magicaly just because she is always the first one to manage spells and because she is, well, perseverant.

While I'm sure some people here think she is magically weak, I think it is more that there isn't any evidence to suggest that she is magically strong (above average) and that on top of that she tends to be a know-it-all hypocrite. She wants them to study, but if they know something without putting the same type of work load she does into it, she gets pissy. She constantly has to have people tell her she is right. She is somehow personally affronted if people enjoy things that she takes no interest in or if they don't want to study the same way she does. For all her logic this and that, she is never consistent. Sometimes she breaks the rules, sometimes she thinks it is horrible to do so - and not always for the same reasons. Being smart is great, just don't shove it in everyone's faces, assume the way you are doing it is the only way to go about things and be pissy when others top you. If you aren't naturally a genuis, making up for it by studying your ass off is comendable, but to lord it over others that they aren't taking your path because there interests lie else where deserves a good bitch slap. And, what really riles me up is that she isn't the only one of the trio that does the thinking. Harry often puts the pieces together: figures out how someone would know how to get past Fluffy, figured out where the entrance to the Chamber was, figured out Dumbledore meant for them to save Buckbeak... anyway, you get the idea. She never stops and listens. She hears a scenerio, makes up her mind about something then assumes she always knows what is right and doesn't take into account anything else. (She is constantly doing this in OotP and HBP)

But when it comes to take a decision, she follow what harry says, or she can change her mind if needs be. Like snape and the quidditch match in PS, malfoy and the polyjuice ine Cos, Harry and the whole save sirius in Poa, believing harry in Gof, against the ministry and putting the da in Ootp in order for Harry to gain respect, and to help others.
I will admit hse is messed up in HBP, but i haven't ruled out the possibility that ginny gave her a love potion for Ron...
Also, she doesn't appear to be jealous for the patronus in Poa, and she is the one who thinks harry should be the leader of the DA.

I really think you are just seeing the bad side of her, and exagerate things, like i am biased toward her :p

^ Yeah, because we can't forget that she didn't believe Harry that Snape *might* be a DE with Draco.

She still didn't believe Sirius was good until Pettigrew came. Also, Dumbledore said save Sirius with the turner, Hermione had no clue what to do.

Also, she backs out a lot. She is a fucking coward. She proposes the DA, and then says don't do it because Sirius said it's a good idea.

She is constantly complaining how people are so useless, and that they should read more. She complains about Luna, yet Luna was one of the best in the DoM. She calls Lav and Parvati dunces, yet they are in the DA, and manage the spells the same.

HAH! You don't think she's bossy.

As hermione's power, level of bitchiness has been complealty covered at this point I'm going to move on to another cliche. The twin who lived crap. If you look at canon Harry was given the title the Boy-who-lived not because he defeated Voldemort, but because he was the first and only person to survive after Voldemort slated them for death. If he and his twin and their parents survived the twin wouldn't get all the attention. If anything the parents would be awarded Orders of Merlins for killing Voldemort.

He was given the title because he was the only person to survive the killing curse not because he survived a confrontation with Voldemort. The reading of the prophecy proves 4 other people (Lily, James, Alice, Frank) survived three encounters with Voldemort and we have seen Dumbledore survive.

No they wouldn't.... It may be in their interests to attempt to take it, so that their children aren't pressured; but, if, like in most of them, the parents are out and the first person on the scene isn't necissarily them, then it can escalate into an issue that is plausible.

But that's the main problem - believability. The twin is also slated as the Boy-Who-Lived through improbable and hardly-concievable means; "Oh, he has a bigger scar"; "He was the closest to the door," et cetera. Next improbability is leaving the parents alive and having the non-chosen removed to his Aunt and Uncle Dursley; this is for "tension" but it's overused, and poorly so - it is not believable in a world where cultures spend so much time invested in the "popular" to see a child removed due to possible jealousy issues.

That's just stupid arrogance and the Potters are not arrogant - you don't evade Voldemort - the most arrogant - three times, by having a pissing contest with his arrogance. Thousands of siblings have grownup into society's finest around celebrities; this plot device used in Twin-stories is more bullshit than what you believe is impossible.

Having said all that, it comes down to execution 99.9% of the time - there's a time and a place for everything. So many stories are front-loaded that they never get passed Diagon Alley or the "setup." That's because the setup isn't supposed to be done in ten chapters. The setup entails Harry being capable of fighting the antagonist or having everything done so resolution of the plot can come to pass.

If you have your setup done before we even understand the plot, that's dumb. Even the well-wrought, skilled player in a story will have to undertake a setup of sorts; when you create the setup in ten chapters showcasing Harry's immense talent, his riches, his ability to scoop right from wrong, you're bound to failure. There's no hard-work and nothing the reader can even get immersed into. So, I think that's a cliche - the 1, 2, 3, rush setup.

I was just about to come and rant about twin stories, but I have been beaten to it...

Basically what gets me, and It isnt really a cliche, rather a ridiculously annoying error. Harrys' twin is the boy-who-lived in stories that are AU to the extent that Voldemort didnt attack the Potters. How can he be the boy-who-lived if he never got the chance to survive the killing curse?

I actually miss a cliche, it recently was brought to my attention. It's been so long that I realised I missed the Muggle!OC Harry usually bangs before going back to Hogwarts. I mean it would usually be some super hot mary-sue but it would still be hot smut and then Harry would go to Hogwarts with experience and bone everygirl that made eye contact with him.

    *sigh the good old days...

    ^^From The Half-blood Prince. Ch. 23 pg. 509.

That is perhaps the biggest indicator of there being different levels of power. It suggests that wizards/witches have different amounts of power and limits to them. (Atleast in my eyes.) I don't really like the fact that everyone can basically reach the level of power through enough hard work and training. Don't like the fact that Ron could, if he tries, reach the same level ad Dumbledore. Thats what I get from reading your posts. If I'm wrong about that then I apologize in advance.

Good post...only I don't think that most of us here actually count :hbp as canon...just a fanfiction story that we had to pay for that was extremely popular with creepy fangirls.
