    Its hardly the only one.

I am pretty sure the books are full of examples of both blatant and implied disgust on Voldemort's part. Where did you get the idea that Voldemort respects Dumbledore?

In the end, it was Voldemort's curse on the ring that brought about Dumbledore's death, while it took those ridiculously convoluted wand ownership rules to kill Voldemort, so he was probably the stronger wizard of the two. Voldemort had the right to be arrogant.

Then again, Dumbledore would have given his life in a heartbeat if it meant Voldemort's death, so may be Dumbledore was victorious in the end, even if the final blow wasn't of his planning.

Through the first four and a half books, there's very little evidence of the opposite, either, except for a memory bragging that he drove Dumbledore from the castle.

And my thought wasn't that he respected Dumbledore per se, but rather, that he respected an opponent who was his equal, because Voldemort's ultimate goal wasn't blood superiority or proving the Dark Arts were better, it was, to quote him specifically, "Power." That he recognized it in someone else and respected it wouldn't be far-fetched. The same is true often in history where kings and generals held a certain respect for other kings and generals, even if they were mortal enemies.

Questions that don't deserve their own thread V2

Damn, I forgot to check DH where Harry was in Voldemort's mind. And I agree, to an extent. He's not exactly respectful toward Dumbledore. I think more toward his power and reach, but not the man himself. The disrespect isn't overt because that's not his style, and he does acknowledge that Dumbledore is his greatest threat (until the end he spoke about how Harry was a puppet of Dumbledore, he didn't give Harry a lot of credit even with the prophecy), so it a bit difficult to find any direct insults. As far as I could find, he only distinctly called Dumbledore a fool twice, once audibly in GoF and once inaudibly in DH.

So I wouldn't say that having Voldemort call Dumbledore and other people fools is exactly fanon (actually, if you search for 'fool' in the chapters Voldemort appears in GoF, he says 'fool' or 'foolish' quite a bit), but it is fanon that Voldemort is so blunt and uses that as his go-to insult. It's a lack of creativity on part of the fanfiction writer, really.

Now, I have a question. While I was googling the chapter in GoF where Harry has a vision (Chapter 29: The Dream), a Wiki page came up about Legilimency and I opened it so that I could figure out which chapter it was, but it didn't include Harry's visions. I always saw Harry's visions as a sort of passive Legilimency since the subject came up in OotP, and especially after DH. But is it not Legilimency? I don't mean opinions of what Legilimency really is, I mean is there any canon evidence that it is or it is not Legilimency?

Is this the first manifestation of the Horcrux connection between Harry and Voldemort? I was very surprised when I read this because I only recalled these dreams starting from forth year with the murder of the groundkeeper, or am I missing/misremembering something? The dream seems to be a mixture of Voldemort's influence and Harry's own fears, because while his fear of landing in Slytherin and his animosity towards Malfoy and Snape were his own, the turban seems oddly out of place as well as the whole "destiny" thing which seems to hint at the prophecy(?) and of course the "burst of green light".

Hmm. I personally never considered Harry's flash of green light dreams as horcrux-linked. Just nightmares. But who knows? Maybe Voldy's nasty little soul piece has been influencing Harry on a subconscious level all his life. That exact theory has been the basis of many a good (and bad) psychological horror fic.

Why is Severitius called Severitis? I mean, obviously the "sever" bit is from the name Severus, but where does the "itis" come from?
I've been puzzling over this for ages...

Well, since -itis is a medical suffix for a disease accompanied by inflammation, Severitus extrapolates to "the disease of pairing Snape and Harry, in any way, that inflames your eyes."

Pretty sure it's a homage to the original user who created the challenge, for a more serious response.

Yeah, that. There are older "Snape is Harry's father" fics, but her challenge drove the entire genre early on.

Severitus -> Snape is Harry's biological father
Sevitus -> Snape adopted Harry or is his mentor

And what n00bs like gundam_wizard might not know - DLP's stance on these kind of fics isn't as onesided as the posts above indicate: The library once had an entire subforum for it: http://web.archive.org/web/20050831202315/http://forums.darklordpotter.net/

I actually think 'Snape as Harry's mentor' could be well done, it's just the fact that so many of them are utter garbage and/or slash that turns me/most people off of the potential genre.

Exactly this. I used to like Snape, or the idea of Snape, as a character. But now when I encounter him playing some protector role in an average story it's almost always cringeworthy.

People are so used to the concept of Snape as a positive character that they frequently skip the part where their story is meant to redeem him somehow before he can be that positive influence. In canon he's bitter, petty, nasty, and unwilling to change - but in fanon he's the misunderstood guy with the sad backstory and people eat that shit up.

The end result is too many stories turning him into something he's not, often completely ignoring every glaring flaw and ugly character trait in order to shove him into the role they want him to play. It's disturbing opening a story to be greeted by the vindictive man from canon suddenly being wholly, entirely, someone he's not - and not even going through any prerequisite character development beyond 'he finally realised that maybe Harry was more like his mother than his father' in order to get there.

It's not even the skipped character development that I dislike as much as that Snape's flaws are the entire thing that makes the idea of him mentoring Harry interesting. Even if your "good Snape" is an internally consistent character that's written well enough that I can just accept the difference as an AU thing, "Harry is mentored by someone that cares about him and has his best interests at heart" is a pretty bland story concept compared to "Harry is grudgingly mentored by someone who (initially) despises him".

Are there any reasons (stated in Pottermore or you can think of) why flying carpets are illegal?

    Lobbying by the broom companies?
Difficulty to conceal them? Because they're slower/bigger/more colorful than brooms?
Political tension with the Middle-East or with Asia?

I don't know of any canonical response.

We know from Arthur's job that it's generally illegal to take Muggle items and enchant them.

So the question is kinda the wrong way around. Magic carpets being illegal isn't the exception, brooms being legal is.

There is a scene in GoF:

So it's stated that there is an embargo upon them because they are Muggle Artefacts.

    EDIT:

I realise that that's not really answering the question, as we only see the result, not the reason to place them on the list.
