Yeah, that was the only time I remembered it happening as well.

Shouldn't be too hard to have Dumbledore be capable of it though. I can think of about half a dozen ways how he does this backed by canon spells. For example, a simple protean charm linking a small mirror outside his office to one in his office should let him see whoever it is outside before they knock.

Is the Shrieking Shack only accessible through the Whomping Willow's passage or is there ever a mention of an entrance through a front door or something?

Just a paragraph before this quote is a mention of windows in the Shrieking Shack

So, entrances to the Shrieking Shack did exist, but they were sealed, presumably by Dumbledore, so that it would keep Lupin in during his transformation.

Is anything known about Abraxan, the things that drew the Beaxbatons carriage?

Any reasonable speculation about them, even?

Well, we were told that they only drink single malt whiskey and required forceful handling, but otherwise I can't think of anything. Madame Maxine may have bred them herself, given Hagrid's small mention of having a friend that bred them in OotP.

I'd probably look to pegasi as the inspiration, so if you want to use them in some way look to their myths.

Weren't they mentioned to be big as a small house in Pottermore?

I think that perhaps this is a particular preference of the ones Maxime herself breeds, as ... well, that's the only option that makes sense to me. But yeah, not much to go on beyond Maxime's, which is why I thought to ask if maybe someone had thought of any ideas or met a fic that attempted to give some depth to them.

They're obviously the origin, but I'm not sure how that would apply considering a) the Abraxan are supposed to be really fucking huge and b) not too much is known about pegasi of mythology beyond being, well, winged horses.

    >_>

    <_<

That's definitely not why I'm asking.

I was just listing everything I remembered about them.

This part is wrong. Pegasus was the horse god of the Ancient Greeks, son of Poseidon and Medusa. He was born when Perseus decapitated Medusa along with his brother, whose name I can't remember. There was something to do with springs popping up wherever he landed and he once carried Zeus' thunderbolts. He was eventually tamed by Bellerophon as well, aiding him in slaying the chimera.

Huh. Never expected studying the Iliad to actually be useful at some point.

If you want more information, read through the part of the Iliad where Glaucus or Sarpedon recount their family history. You won't be able to miss it. It goes on for pages.

There was never any mention of a library in Grimmauld Place in the books, was there?

Mrs Weasley was keeping Harry and co from getting at certain books as they cleaned the place out, I'm pretty sure. Don't know if that implies there was a library or a private collection though.

It probably was just a shelf with 5-10 books. It'd be a nice big "Denied!" to yet another fanon invention.

I can't remember that but I no longer have the books to check. Sure this isn't fanon aswell?

I'm not 100%, but to the best of my knowledge there was a throwaway line about Hermione itching to get at the 'bad' pile. I think it was just before they were spraying curtains for Doxys (ies?).

... if y'all don't have the books and don't check anywhere else, it's baseless speculation >.<

HP-Lexicon: No mention of a library. A search in the books didn't reveal anything either. The only book that is mentioned afaics is Nature's Nobility, the genealogy, which Sirius used as a bat when they were cleaning up the drawing room.

I have to admit, though, that given all Fanon inventions you can think of, this is one of the more reasonable ones. Old houses of wealthey families do tend to have libraries -- whether that's a separate room or shelves of books in e.g. the drawing room. What's unreasonable is inventing it purely as another way of Weasley-bashing (re: Mrs. Weasley restricting access and getting away with that in a house that isn't even hers).

Just went through OotP. There's no mention of a library (or a shelf with books) in Grimmauld Place at all. The only book that appears is Nature’s Nobility: A Wizarding Genealogy, which Sirius uses to squash a "many-legged pair of tweezers." Other than that, the only books that are mentioned are those that are needed for the Hogwarts booklist.

    Edit: Ninja-ed.

Does anyone know how old Flitwick is or when (what year) he was a student at Hogwarts?
I dont think there was anything in the books about it and since I need it for a story I plan to write I thought I would ask here first.

    Thanks

Anyone know if the Death Eaters in Azkaban could feel when Voldemort summoned them with the Dark Mark?

According to the book anyone with a dark mark could feel the summons when it turned black. Voldemort even said that the Lestranges should have been at the first summoning but Azkaban kept them away.

Exactly the right thing to do.

And unless Pottermore had some very recent additional info(?), I think the summary from the Lexicon is valid:

We do know, however, that his birthday was on October 17th, in case that is also relevant.
