There are a lot of fans that mistake canon for fanon.

Stuck the same way people associate Daphne with being a leggy blonde, and that Blaise was once a woman. I don't think JK ever once described a female character by bust size.

It wasn't until HBP that Blaise was confirmed to be a dude. Before that all we had was a name.

    And Italian.
Even after he was confirmed as a male, he ended up as a white Italian guy in quite a few fics.

It's actually kind of funny to look at the timeline of HP fanfiction and the changes that occur. Harry/Blaise, as a female, just turned into Harry/Daphne as the fandom needed a new blank Slytherin to work with once we knew Blaise was a guy. There was a small transition time where Blaise(F) became a thing because people wanted to hold on to the character, but it died pretty quickly.

I recall Taure postulating on IRC that it started as a way to differentiate her from other haremettes and that it just stuck.

As someone who abhors harem fics with a passion, that is just disturbing.

As an observer of the greater Harry Potter fandom… yeah, that might actually be what happened.

Has a harem fic ever been done right? I can't seem to recall a single one.

There are some that are decent to good from a technical standpoint (Heart and Soul by Sillimaure comes to mind, which was one of the last harem fics I even attempted to read). Maybe the countless abhorrent examples that, for some reason, are read by thousands of people that can be found in the genre, tend to distort perception, but my personal theory is that the implausibility of the arrangements – being so far removed from what is real, possible and socially accepted in what I am going to refer to, for simplicity’s sake, as Western culture – has always kept the very best writers at bay.

Also, wish fulfillment. Very few good things come from the brains of horny teenagers. That alone should account for a significant portion of fics in the genre.

Can this thread not become Story Searches that don't require their own Threads? Read the OP again for what it is, everyone.

@99redbloons: That question, actually, does deserve its own thread. "Everything that is known" is a lot. A good starting place are the lexica, though, of course, the wiki manages to mix books and movies and video games without further indication as usual, so take care.

@Polkiuj: Same to you. I suppose you used the search, I didn't find anything either. Make it a general purpose Magical Contracts thread; we have some lawyers on board, it'll be interesting.

    Edit:
And of course no one will be tempted to respond to the below post here.

That's actually a good idea for a thread.

She doesn't. For some reason, I substituted Guv'nor for Wotcher in my head. Either that, or was flashing back to the "The Magician's Nephew."

Has there been any canon indication as to how one would go about dispelling the Imperius on another person, if one knew that person was under its effects?

Surely it can't be as simple as a Finite.

The thief's downfall at Gringotts removed the curse on the Goblin and the Death Eater as well as the charms and potions on Ron and Hermione. Apart from that I don't think anything is confirmed although it's possible that there are other ways. However, because of the problems that the Ministry had with knowing who was a real Death Eater at the end of the first war I've no idea how they'd apply it.

Hmm ... I think a tentative conclusion is that this might simply not be possible. Of the instances I recall that we see, it's always the person itself breaking it -- Harry in Crouch!Moody's lesson, Crouch Sr. when he escapes home and has these few clear moments at Hogwarts (both GoF) -- or simply not breaking it at all, as when both of Voldemort's vanishings are said to cause Ministry personnel to come to their senses. If there was a way to break it externally, you'd think they'd do that.

But as far as I remember, we never see nor are ever told of a way to break someone's Imperius Curse, no. Edit: Didn't remember the Thief's Downfall, but that's arguably goblin magic.

Actually, wasn't there a passage about a ton of imperius curses breaking when Voldemort was vanquished the first time? He didn't really die, so I wonder if there's an active component that requires some measure of will/concentration/ongoing exertion.

    Edit: Beaten to it.
