What the fuck? Yep, that's certainly an odd one. That said, apple cider-flavored oatmeal was one of my faves as a kid.

Another interesting simile: "he could feel the joy welling up in him like the piss in his bladder" =P

EDIT: I think tension would more spread throughout the cider, instead of floating on top. Maybe "and though everyone seemed content you could feel the tension mixed through, like milk in a glass of orange juice"
