Stylistic choices would be up to the studio, although for the widest reaching appeal, something that isn't overly grimdark would probably be best. For character design choices, having the characters all be bishi is definitely out, and I think a style similar to that used in Baccano! or Durarara!! would be good.

In light novel adaptions (which are the closest thing you'll find to an honest to god book adaption in anime) that I thought were particularly well done in regard to the source material (Haruhi, Spice and Wolf) the pages:episodes ratio was about 35-45 pages to 1 ep (Melancholy of Haruhi - 33 pages per ep; Spice and Wolf Book 4 - 40 pages per ep), so allocating the total amount of ep's beforehand shouldn't be too hard to do with a reasonable degree of accuracy.

I think there is enough going on in the HP books that even between the major events, an anime wouldn't be boring even if they're doing inconsequential things. The recent slice-of-life boom has shown there is an audience for that as well.

Though to be fair, it is a rather engaging/distracting image. I'd probably ignore the comments 9 times outta 10.

I see Alice, Dorothy, Toto, Winnie the Pooh, Matthias, the White Rabbit, a Munchkin? Also, there's Charlotte, Saphira (I think), and the One Ring. No idea regarding the unicorn, the butterfly or the orange dragon, though. Is the blond guy the Mad Hatter? And what's the square-headed thing running on the book case?

On the topic, an anime adaptation of HP won't realistically cover the events in the books, I think, because the films were so popular. The Japanese studios wouldn't want to make a rehash of something that is already mega-popular. What we might get is either an AU from the main story, a prequel/sequel (i.e. Next Gen, Marauders), or "side-stories" which concern minor characters and/or involve episodic, slice-of-life scenarios.

They're not all terrible options, though, so there's still hope.

I would have thought the mouse to be Martin, rather than Matthias. Orange dragon made me thing of Anne McCaffrey's series, not sure why though...

Is that an Oompa-Loompa in there as well?

If an HP anime would go for a different plot, I'd definitely prefer Marauders over Next Gen. It would have a very high risk of turning into a High School Drama though.

I'm with Blaise on Animated HP. In particular, the deviant artist Makani has characterized the HP folk in many illustrations in what can best be described as a Disney-esque way, but one that does a superior job of distinguishing characters.

    Try this.

Now tell me you didn't know exactly who was who without a scorecard.

The blond guy is Willy Wonka, and the Three Blind Mice (I think) are running on the shelf on the left. I thought that the mouse next to Harry was Reepicheep, but I suppose it could be Martin or Matthias.

Awesome. First time I've ever seen Arthur Weasley look exactly how I thought he should

I like the idea of an animated HP series... but not an 'anime' style HP series. Anime pretty much sucks, save for the fight scenes. Wordhammer's got the right of it - that makani fellow's style of drawing would work best. Or, possibly, like Avatar...that artwork is pretty good.

The first link puts me in the mind of Sailor Moon. It's good though, but I'd prefer a more 'american-ized' cartoon.

Makani's work has been featured on a couple of threads here; hers is the prototype for Hp characters IMO. Grand Prè's cover art (for the American books) comes in at a rather distant second, as it brings to mind pictures of these commercials I'd linked in another thread.

(Pay closer attention to the first link)

Those are awesome, Blaise, especially Two Worlds. I can really picture Harry Potter animated in a similar fashion. Too bad we got the movies.

An HP series done by the guys behind Avatar would be great, but I can't help thinking that an anime series done in the Japanese industry in its present state - drowning in moe and obsessed with lolicon - would be bad. And I would rather have no HP anime than anything like what most studios are pumping out now.

    Aside:

Besides the scenarios others have brought up in the thread - like the Gotham Knight idea - it could also end up falling into the hands of a more 'creative' director.

    Gentlemen, the horror.

You know, the other artwork originally linked, while very pretty, would be something I would never watch. Maybe if it was hp I would give it a chance.

But this new picture you just linked would be something that could pique my interest and try out an episode or two o,o

I've been a fan of her HP art for quite a few years now... except that she seems to harbor a strong dislike for the good guys and a disturbing love of the villains.

Which, sadly, is fairly consistent among many of the better artists out there. It's always either the villains, or canon pairings that they seem completely stuck on.

The blond guy is Wonka, if the 'W' on his tie and the chocolate bar in his mouth are any indication.

The bird coming out of the book is, I assume, a mockingbird, because they're reading To Kill a Mockingbird.

Since she's wearing a blue dress, pinafore, and an alice band, I'll assume the girl lying on her stomach is Alice.

Interestingly, that's not the book version of Dorothy Gale, it's the Judy Garland movie version. Book Dorothy was younger (usually - there were only a zillion different authors), was blond, her slippers were silver, and her Toto usually didn't look like a Cairn Terrier.

The butterfly is just Butterfly, and the unicorn is Amalthea, both from The Last Unicorn.

And don't get me started on the fuck-up that was the DVD release(s). First release was from a shitty cropped version with low quality sound. Second release was the original theatrical screen ratio and sound, but they herped, and they derped, and removed the tame profanity from a classic movie.

Fuckers need to learn to keep their damned dick-beaters off of other people's shit!

And, as has been the case since forever, you can only get the soundtrack from Germany... which means they're doing something right over there.

The really insane(ly awesome) thing about this picture is that the book spines are virtually all actual book covers. The HP books are there behind the White Rabbit, above them are Jurassic Park, Dune, Of Mice and Men...

One of the books under the White Rabbit is Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. :awesome

There are three mice running along a shelf in front of a copy of Watership Down, The Hobbit... No clue what the mice are, unless they're from Mrs. Frisby and The Rats of NIMH, or simply Three Blind Mice.

I suppose we could name all the books we see as well. because nothing screams bookworm like being able to identify a book by it's spine alone.

anyway: twilight (ugh) is right above the first mouse

I know those are the first four books of WoT Series right behind the ladder on second highest shelf.

part of the sword of truth series is on the third shelf next to wonka's leg, and more are next to toto.

"Harry Potter, a normal sixteen-year-old wizard, hasn't gotten along with his Potions teacher, Severus Snape, in years. For longer than he can remember, Snape has criticized his potions and father and looked at him with spurning eyes. It seemed as if the relationship between Harry and his teacher, now thirty-seven, would continue this way forever.

One day, however, Kyousuke finds the book of spells inscribed as the "property of the Half Blood Prince", which was apart of a pile of old textbooks. To Harry's surprise, inside the pages are hidden spells. Harry attempts to fish out the culprit who dropped the book by using Sectumsempra on rivals. All that comes out is a strong negative reaction from his mates, especially his anti-rule breaking book-worm friend Hermione.

That night, Snape bursts into Harry's room and, in perhaps the first conversation she has initiated with him in years, says they "have things to talk about." Snape brings Harry to his room and shows him an extensive collection of dark magic and Lily photos he has been collecting in secret...."

    Straight from the blurb!

It is. If you look to the fourth row up on the most left bookcase you'll see the Eragon book cover with a picture of Saphira on it.
