This. I LOVED those stories. I'd also like to see the sequel to The Lie I've Lived.

    Ishtar's Family Values for one.

I wouldn't mind seeing the ending of LordDragon73's Harry Potter and the Dance of the Warrior. Despite its flaws (misspelling Privet Drive in the first chapter's title?), it's one of the tiny number of readable Indy!Harry/Ginny tales from the early days of HP fanfiction.

That and Yin and Yang. IP82 was too skilled an author to vanish like that.

    Thalarian's story too.

Thor Nairda's Shadow Play and Demon Within.

    Yin and Yang

Especially since last time I communicated with IP82, he said chapter 4 of Y&Y was almost done. Granted, that was two years ago, roughly.

Queens of Light, Ladies of Darkness

Frustrating, since Thalarian had chapter 2 basically done, at 43k words. I'm pretty sure he's completely left the fandom and doesn't want anything to do with it, considering he ignores messages sent via myspace.

Harry Potter and the Hero's Path

From what I've read from tJoD's comments, he appeared to have the entire story planned out, in detail. Does make me wonder why compels a person to completely disappear from the internet, outside of being 'dead'.

    The Potter Conspiracy

I've had long conversation with Darklordmike about this one, and know how it ends...but still, it'd be nice to see it finished. Mike really seems to have dropped off the face of the earth, I haven't seen him online via gchat in four months.

    Young Again: The Rewrite
    In Light of Silver Memories

Taliath has confirmed both of these as dead, which is a shame. Really, Naruto? Bleh.

The Chimera: More Snake than Lion

Even if the writing was really choppy in the earlier chapters, I felt it really started to pick up in the later chapters. Sadly, confirmed as abandoned.

    Unforgiven

Something I found completely captivating, even if it didn't seem to have a huge following here. GL used to reply to private messages, but hasn't over the past year or so. He claimed to have dealt with multiple hard drive crashes, so I wonder if he just gave up.

In the Clockface, Weighted and Wary

Not really abandoned, but still, it has been close to a year and a half since the last update.

I think that's it. Oh, and it'd be nice if BigD wrote faster, or with more frequency.

As most of the fics I would have thought of off the top have my head have been mentioned already I'm just going to say Knowledge is Power, if anything to see where that shitstorm was going to end up.

And I wish authors would just come out and say that they've lost interest in continuing a story instead of making excuses about why they haven't updated in awhile. Granted, there are some instances where circumstances outside of the author's control force a story to go on hiatus/near abandonment for a long time, but I think most times it's just the author losing interest in writing the story and not wanting to admit it to his/her audience.

...dude. I think I can safely say that the main reason why stories end up on hiatus or abandoned is a lack of time to write. That has nothing at all to do with losing interest.

Look at it this way: A good story (and we're talking about good stories here, right?) takes a lot of planning. You have dozens of little scraps of paper and files on you HDD, with notes and ideas and plans. There's a lot of work you have (and have to) put in it. You do not want to simply give that up and have it all been for nothing.

The problem is that you have a paradox: writing good stories takes much more time than spewing out shit stories. Competent authors want to write good stories. However, competent authors are often as well those with the least time to write, because they're competent IRL also and busy students or with a job.

If an author says RL got in the way of writing, than you'd be right more often than not if you believed him :|

Anyway, with shit stories I might agree with you -- the readers knows it blows, the author realises that as well eventually, and loses interest -- but no one cares about those stories anyway, do they?

This thread makes me sad. All of these poor lost fanfics.

I think I'd have a damn parade if the whole Elemental series that Raven Dragonclaw had planned was finished. Not just Prophecies, but the like 4 other planned stories in the series, too.

But like I said, this thread makes me sad :/

I was about to go into a fucking rage over this, but I said, fuck it, it's not worth it. Sesc said it much more eloquently than I would have. It's not about losing interest or admitting to anything. It's about not wanting the story that you've been working very hard at writing, not sucking by posting rushed crap. Or perhaps there is something else that is taking up our time.

I'm becoming a big fan of the "Giant rock falls. Kills everyone. The end."

So, do us a favor and post your self-realized insecurities somewhere else.

I'd like to see the rest of the outlined story for FullPensieve's Harry Potter and the Years of Rebellion, even if it isn't going to be properly finished. Ditto with japanese-jew's Wit of the Raven, especially if said author got a beta to work on his prose for him.

And I second "Ectomancer" and "Sound of Sorcery" from above, though the former hasn't been on pause for long enough to count as being completely 'shelved' IMO.

Update to the Stranger Trilogy, without a doubt.

Sequel to the Summer of Change by Lordwar.

Shezza making another Denarian (wtf with the ending mang).

Loads more but can't think of them right now.

If Stranger in the Promised Land got updated I'm making a mess, several times.

I don't think we have to look at this in a negative manner (admittedly, I'm not an author, etc. etc.). This is just a thread about the stories that were so fucking good that, years later, we still remember them and crave for updates.

Anyways, I'm going to have to go with:

    • Knowledge is Power by Fettucini
      • This was just really entertaining. I know that some people might think of it as overrated, but I really liked it.
    • Anarkia by Naia
      • The world Naia created for this story is just so enticing. This is one of my favorite stories, for sure.
    • Wit of the Raven by japanese-jew
      • interesting side-story...after gushing over this fic years ago j-j offered to let me co-author part of it, but I was scared and ran away
    • In Light of Silver Memories by taliath
      • only kinda sorta...I don't know how good it would be, but there is that one speech by Harry/Dumbledore that makes it makes this beyond awesome in my eyes
I don't expect updates for any of these to happen, but if I saw such an email in my inbox, I would probably abandon whatever I was doing and read the update immediately. And probably repeat "fuck yeah" a hundred times while doing so.

The fanfic I most wish hadn't been abandoned? That would have to be Slytherin Eater by Rogue11. So much win. And it stopped updating on a cliffhanger too. :(
