I rarely post, but this discussion's quite delicious, so i'm going to join in. To the people preaching that no sane 24 year old woman would go for a 16 y/o boy/young man/HPotter, i'd like to draw your attention to Exhibit A: Emmanuel Macron, current President of France. 39 year old president, married to a 64 year old woman, a relationship spanning 24!! years. It began when he was 15 and Mme Macron was his 39 year old teacher.

 

Ok, i admit, i failed to take his legislative stance and libertarian? approach into account when bringing him up in a discussion about age gaps and fanon relationships. My bad

 

I honestly think this thread is a joke. No offense to anyone but come on. Look at the fandom. If HarryxTonks even make the list of top 100 problems, there is something wrong with the list.

Anyway, if it was irl...it would be more than a little creepy. However, in the word of fanfiction, it doesn't matter. It could be a fun pairing to read and write and this is what matters.

 

Harry/Tonks is morally, aesthetically, and tastelessly wrong if she morphs into a man and impregnates Harry. Other than that? As long as Harry turns seventeen before anything physical happens, there's nothing morally wrong with it.

 

To be entirely fair to the pairing, 24 is not necessarily a particularly mature age, though it can be for some people (Tonks has shown no signs of being one of them).

I can see it without it being incredibly icky. It'd need a convincing chemistry and good combination of down to earth younger half and immature older half, which admittedly is not hard to pull off with the people involved.

I'd argue that's a bigger reason as to why the pairing is so popular, as most fics (good or no) tend to explore Tonks' attitude more than abilities.

Actually, based on the Twins' actions in OotP there's a fair argument to be made that the age of majority, such as it is, is 15. Once you have your OWL's you're considered an adult since they could leave school and start a business at that age.

 

Those don't really have a correlation to each other. You don't have to be an adult to have a business in the muggle world, and I don't see why that would be different in the magical world (though we could make something up of course since the two worlds go to great strides to remain separate). Similarly in muggle UK the dropout age is 16.

Regardless, the twins were already 18 years old by the time they dropped out.

 

Actually, as I recall they explicitly say the age of majority is 17 in the Wizarding World in Deathly Hallows. Of course, that's different from the age of consent.

 

Yes it would be an issue. We're not talking about a 29 and 24 year old hooking up. We're talking about a teen potentially dating a 23 year old. Unless Tonks is a pedo no sane women would go after a snot nosed brat.

From what we can see of canon, wizards seem to take consequences lightly. (Dumbledore and Tom along with Hagrid and Sirius)

You guys are way overfocused on this 'age of consent' thing. Didn't any of you want to get it on with an older woman when you were thirteen? I know I did. And no I was not about to report her if one had happened to grant me that wish.

 

I don't think anyone's suggesting that Harry isn't willing, in this scenario. It's still illegal, and morally dubious on Tonks' part at best.

 

I mean, who is she hurting here for it to be morally wrong?
