    1. We've essentially had this thread already, and it wound up in the Hall of Shame.

    2. Fairly sure this kind of post is what the Library thread is for.

    3. 'Best fanfic ever written' is a title that will vary from person to person, based on wildly different criteria, so you'll never get a definitive answer no matter what fic you suggest.

No, Bungle in the Jungle is better - Harry has an awesome jaguar form instead of a gay deer.

Sure...but both your posts in this thread are reviews. Saying it's the best fanfic ever written is just extra detail in that review.

I wouldn't go that far as to classify it the best. Is it a strong contender even after many years for bringing me entertainment? Sure. A top 50 fic without doubt, and if I sat down again recently to reread, I'm sure it would make it to top 25. But off the top of my head I prefer Nonjon's A Black Comedy better in most regards.

Quite frankly I think we can leave off the "new" and still have that statement be correct.

There's useless noob shitposting and there's shitposting. We the enlightened DLPrs tend more towards the latter.

I've probably written 25,000 words over the years on why TLIL is terrible. Shame I missed the boat on it this time.

Poor shinysavage - now it looks like he was the one proposing TLIL as the best fanfiction ever.

For what it's worth, I loved the fic when I first read it, when it was getting written. But as I grew up, it got worse and worse with each reading. It went from being one of my favourite fics, to one that I can't even read nowadays.

Same here. I could never get into it. Harry is totally unlikable in my opinion.

jbern's Harry is a wish-fulfillment fantasy of what a lot of teenage boys (and presumably jbern himself back when these were written) believe is cool and manly or whatever. It doesn't work for me.

The last time this came up I actually spoke in its defense as being one of the fandom's best fics, but having glanced through it after I did so I concur it has not aged well at all. Or rather, I suspect it is still pretty appealing to a particular demographic, but that the DLP that exists today (as opposed to the DLP of a decade ago) is not that demographic.

And yet oddly enough all of jbern's stories seem to be littered with 70's and 80's pop culture references, so if I didn't know better, I'd identify his target demographic as Baby Boomers.

Anyways, my big problem with Lie specifically is that it contrives so much needless drama to keep up the same level of constant action that his other big stories, To Fight the Coming Darkness and Bungle in the Jungle did, and the result is to Goblet of Fire what Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy was to the original novel. The worst of it for me being the conflict between Harry and the Weasleys/Chasers that could have been avoided if he'd been more forthcoming with Katie about missing their date and if the twins hadn't been turned into stubborn, vengeful idiots even after Harry mended fences with Ginny. It's just such obvious padding, and Harry's retaliatory pranks aren't funny. Hell, you'll notice that the Weasley twins' pranks are much more often told about at most as opposed to actually seen.

Have to agree with this, this was one of my first fanfics and when I first read the story I thought it was really awesome though I always had problems with the romance, magic system, the annoying sorting hat etc.

But then I read it again after having a bit more FF experience I could see how immature the story is, Harry always having to be the most awesome, confident, womanizer around the sorting hat is just crude and annoying which is really strange because Jbern according to his profile is in his 40s and this reads like a teenage boys wetdream.

Besides the whole tournament was just a joke Harry practically completely stomped the other champions and only struggled because Malfoy intervened, Dementors got out of control etc. The task themselves also were very forgettable and there were just way to many of them which is a shame because I liked the idea of expanding on the TWT.

The characters are also really bad like Snape and Draco, while complete assholes in canon they were reduced to caricatures only their for Harry to slam them down to appear more awesome and if iirc Snape even turning back into a death eater. I can't really remember all details about Ron in this story just that he is barely talking with Harry although they had life and death adventures in the past and I atleast expect to be shown how they drifted away while growing up (Harry geting a character transplant) instead of it being mentioned in a throwaway line.

While I didn't hate "Harry" he could be annoying and I find it really strange that some people say that he was just a James character transplant because you must be deluded if you think that JKR wrote James like this he was fixated on Lily and didn't just try to bang everything that moved besides he matured from his teenage self, this Harry was just a OC which didn't mix both charcters, he had non of Harrys charcter and some handpicked of James. Krum and the Weasley twins also were terrible, Krum just being another character to make Harry more awesome and the Weasleys being complete assholes and far to unreasonable they weren't angels in canon and could be very viscious if they wanted but they never would have pulled this shit on Harry after everything that he has done for the family like saving Ginny because they had some problems with him.

That being said the story is probably still around the better Fanfics it has some interesting action scenes (even if there is shit like magical exhaustion) because for a certain demographic the story can still be enjoyable enough and almost all Fanfics in general are trash.
