AAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaagggggah!! *stabs out eyes with spork*

Why are there so many freakin words that are misused so often?

Pouring - poring: Just what kind of liquid are people always basting their books with, anyway?

Wearily - warily: almost always when someone is suspicious, they somehow end up very tired when they speak...

Sorry for the pointlessness of the post, but I swear to GOD if I see another person POUR over a book, I will have a seizure and die. Just... gah! Anything like this ever bother you guys? I know there's more of them that I'm not thinking of...

Don't forget "your" and "you're". That never fails to irk me. I've seen even competent writers make this mistake.

Heh, you're all fucking wrong. Nothing said before or after this post will be more irksome than the one you read here.

    LOSE not LOOSE.

Here's a good way to get people to fix this. The saying is memorable enough to get it through most average people's heads.

Lose = To not win, or to misplace.
    Loose = Your sister.

Definitely/defiantly comes to mind, as well as Dumbledore constantly overusing 'my boy' and 'for the greater good'.

Not to forget those authors who don't know what tense they're writing in.

Oops, I never pay attention to that. I'm so completely guilty, I know I screwed up half of my next chapter with those mistakes.

Is it sad that my brain has taken to auto correcting everyone's annoying blips? I remember three years ago I cared about those mistakes. Of course, three years ago I thought mentor Snape was a new exciting world.

I porked your mother's plump peaches as the rain poured over her flawless back and she pored over the Fireman's Calendar 2008.

    THEN versus THAN.

THAN is used in comparisons, THEN is an indication of logical progression/progression in time.

    Get. It. Right.

Am I the only one who thought she was correcting someone in the thread?

WASTE v. WAIST. I can WASTE away if I don't eat, but I don't think I'll be WAISTING away. This one makes me insta-X. It's so fucking irritating.

HermanTumbleweed has a BUNCH of these posted up on his group (in an HTML file). The group is working on a second list.

Most of them have made me ROFL.

    Their, they're AND there.

No, they don't mean the same thing. No, you can't use them randomly and hope it'll fit or that no one will notice. And yes, I'll push the beautiful little red x if you do.

    One that's always got me.

    Past v passed.

I know the former represents past time (ie 'the past is in the past', 'favourite pasttime', 'In the past, Blaise has given many a handjob'), but it also has other meanings and other usage.

Just one that stumps me, and to this day I don't know the proper use of those two.

Effect v affect can be troublesome, as well.

Don't forget "should of" and "would of" instead of "should've" or "would've".
That's always annoying me to no end...

Or when people say "He is visiting you and I".
It's "You and I are visiting...", but "He is visiting you and me". When you can substitute with I, it is "You and I". When you can substitute with me, it's "You and me".
    It's not that hard...

Joe, I think 'past' can be past tense of 'pass' and the noun 'past'. Though I'm not certain in the least.

Some alternate spellings of past tense verbs can end in 't' instead of 'ed'. I think it stems from the fact english used 'd for a while, but then spelling changes to the language effected some verbs and not others.

ie leaped (American spelling) vs leapt (Brit spelling) vs leap't (really old spelling) vs leap'd (also old spelling)

Also: Break and Brake, I did this for a while until I made myself aware of it

Further/Farther is something I was made aware of a few months ago, too. Further is for metaphorical distances, farther physical ones.

**Shadow mage corrected me, apparently 'past' can only be a noun.

Two words that used to get me into trouble:

    Conscience

    Conscious

Easiest way to remember is to pronounce them differently in your head.

Lets not forget the regular to/too/two dilemma. Its a pet hate of mine.
