After all that riches she is still writing in a cafe? Guess old habits die hard.....

As for new books we'll have to wait and see. Not much of a hope after HBP and DH though.

For the sake of seeing if she improves, I'll borrow her next book from a library.

A part of me actually looks forward to reading a book JKR wrote that is directed at the more mature audience. It would be interesting to see how she handles it when she doesn't have any limitations due to having to watch the language all the time in the Harry Potter books (at least thats what I tell myself when I struggled through the last two books). Still I'm not putting much hope in how well it is or even how fast it will come out if she is planning on writing again.

Honestly, I can't say I'm really looking forward to it. Her writing style could never be called truly descriptive nor her characters in-depth. That's what made me love HP fanfiction; it left so much to work with. Now, she's trying to go Travis McGee on us and I don't know if this will be a disaster or not. She'll probably make quite a bit on it just because she's JKR.

She'll be writing in the cafe's to start working up publicity, not because she likes it particularly. Maybe its good for inspiration for an aspiring writer, but for someone who will be recognised by a fair proportion of the literate population its got to be filled with distractions.

Yes, she will. A huge part of the HP-readers and I assume half of DLP's active members will have a look at whatever she publishes next. I certainly will.

That's the way it works. At the moment she can write what she want, it will be a bestseller. But if she lands two or three really crappy novels, she'll never sell anything again.

And sometimes you just can't write unless you're "in the zone". I know people who drive out of town and sit on a riverbank when they've got a problem they need to solve. I myself visit rooftops higher than six stories. Once I'm up high in the heart of the city, other things fade away and I can really think.

Maybe coffee shops are just her thing.

It doesn't matter what we think, it matters what the fangirls and -boys all over the world think.

A detective story is a totally different kind of genre with a different target audience and hundred thousands of just average authors. If she is below average concerning that genre then eventually even her fame won't help her to sell something.

    I won't buy it.

    I'll check it online.

I detect high levels of fail radiating from it already, however.

Is it just me or does it scream Nonmagic Dresden?

Nonmagic Dresden is just an average Dark Detective Novel. So yes, that's a possibility. But I'm expecting something like Agatha Christie or Dorothy L. Sayers or so. I don't know, why.

I would reckon that whatever she writes will be well structured, with loads of clues planted throughout, just the way HP was. You have to admit, that even though 6 and 7 weren't particularly good in our general opinion they were well planned and tied up the series fairly well. She had the entire series planned from the start, and I think thats probably something that will continue into anything else she writes.

That's all well and good, but if she can't flesh out her characters enough to get some feelings into the actual story line then everything else will seem second-rate. In-depth characters, at least IMO, seems to be one of her biggest draw backs in her writing and I doubt she can just change that around when writing these works.

Quoted for truth. I can honestly say I'd much rather reread one of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files then a JKR detective series.

I agree with Mordecai. Everything we needed to know for the end to come together we found out throughout the rest of the books. We just had to put it together, but, just like in a good mystery novel, we didn't see the big picture until she actually showed it to us. I think that if there is a genre besides Fantasy that she might do well, then it is Mystery.

I'm not really looking forward to this, not my thing. I can never muddle through these books. I think with JKR's writing it'll be even worse. I applaud her efforts in getting out of one genre, though, trying out new things as a writer. I try to write something completely different for NaNoWriMo every year, mostly to see if I can.

On the topic of her writing haunts, that's pretty normal. Coffee shops are full of inspiration, everywhere you look. If that's where you're comfortable, it's a good place to write.

It is wonderful that JKR is starting a new novel, and I would love to read this new novel as fast as possible, but I am sure it will be a long wait. In the mean time there are many other authors to choose from that are just as talented and skillful as JKR, if not more so. I find it interesting that JKR is still writing, instead of happily swimming in her vast amounts of money like Scrooge McDuck in those disney cartooons where he swims through piles of gold coins. It shows that she is indeed dedicated to the craft of writing and I am sure that her book will be even better than the previous HP series for two reasons:

a)She has experience with HP series
b)She will want a challenge; she will want to top herself so to speak

I also find it interesting that she writes in coffee shops but I don't think it will be too distracting since people might be a little intimidated to approach the richest woman in England.

NanoWrimo sounds fun, and when November comes around I will attempt the challenge. But I have never written anything before and so I know it won't be good. Even so, it will be fun to write a novel in my opinion.

On another note, JKR has already outlined this new novel, very good. Let's hope somebody can steal it and post it on the net. That will be good indeed! Her plot is always complex, which is something I have admired her for.

In short I am looking forward to the new book. My guess is that the new book will arrive in about five years or so.

I...disagree. My opinions on the JKR's master plan in HP are best given by ip82 (Bioplague also said something similar, I recall).

Well according to Mugglenet the detective novel thing was a joke and she has apparently no plans to start a new series yet.
