KenderCleric's Challenge #20: To Command and Conquer

    Summary:

In 1946 at the Trinity site in New Mexico, America, Albert Einstein completed the preparations for his latest experiment. While providing aid to the Manhattan Project team, the renowned scientist had been busily working on his own, even more covert project: to develop a way to travel backwards through time and space. The research had paid off in the form of a device he dubbed the "Chronosphere".

Now, the aged scientist had settled himself into a chair set at the heart of the device and waited. When the chronosphere device activated he suddenly found himself in Landsberg, Germany in the year 1924. His device had worked, and now he simply had to pray his plan would too. It was risky, he knew, but nearly any outcome he could image would be better than the war currently raging in his time. Thoughts of the ever-progression Nuclear weapons technology only served to steel his resolve.

Moments later he found Adolf Hitler just after his release from prison. The future-warmonger was having an animated discussion with a handsome older gentleman wearing what appeared to be robes. Knowing his time was limited Einstein couldn't wait for the two to separate so he approached the duo. Ignoring the elder man's instruction to "Be gone muggle" the time-traveling scientist simply laid his hands on either man's shoulders and in a flash of light both men vanish from history and Einstein returns to his time of origin.

With the threat of Nazi Germany successfully removed from history, the Soviet Union began to grow increasingly powerful under the rule of Joseph Stalin. Likewise, with the threat of Gellert Grindelwald's reign as Dark Lord eliminated the Wizarding world grew complacent. Albus Dumbledore never rose to be more than a well-loved and highly talented Professor and Headmaster, and Tom Riddle had no disenfranchised ex-Grendelwald sympathizers to incite to his banner.

Had Adolf Hitler risen to power, Nazi Germany would have emerged as a force standing in the way of Stalin's own ambitions of conquest. Instead, left unchecked, the Soviet Union proceeds by seizing lands from China and then begins invading Eastern Europe in order to achieve Jospeh Stalin's vision of a Soviet Union stretching across the entire Eurasian landmass. The Soviet leader also taps into a resource that other world leaders have avoided: the magical community. Attempting to recruit the magical world into muggle affairs was considered taboo, as well as pointless, by most world leaders "in the know". However, Stalin's thirst for power drew many to him and gave his words weight where they might otherwise have been ignored. In time the Soviet machine was being furthered powered by conscripts of Wizards, Witches, and various magical races and creatures. The game had changed, and few understood the new rules.

In response, the nations of Europe form into the Alliance, and begin a grim guerrilla war against the Soviet warmachine in what became an alternate Second World War. The Alliance Military began to recruit heavily from the Magical communities in their countries and soon the war took on an appearance never before seen. Guns, tanks, and spells crossed battlefields in equal proportions. The forces for the "Light" as the magical community called it rallied to the Alliance while the darker sides joined with the Soviet warmachine.

Durmstrang became the official Institute of Magic for the Soviet Union. In a move that shocked many of the Soviet Hardliners Stalin appointed an English Wizard-defector as the Comrade Headmaster and official "Archmage of the Union". The man, simply called Voldemort, was reported to have a true flare for the Dark Arts.

Likewise, Hogwarts was elevated to the Alliance's Academy of the Arcane, or "AoA". Albus Dumbledore's keen mind and vaunted knowledge made him an excellent choice for the civilian leader of the school, but it was his long-time friend Alastor Moody who was made the military commander. In short order the two had altered the school's curriculum and a new generation of exceptional Magical soldiers were in training.

The war was long and bloody, but in 1980 things began to fall apart for the Soviet Union. The Alliance Military had managed a series of startling victories. The turn in the tide of war had come at the hands of a young commander by the name of Auror-Auror-Lieutenant James Potter. The wizard had been commanding a platoon of Aurors on maneuvers with a division of Ally troops when they had been ambushed by Soviet Forces. When the commander of the non-magical division was killed along with his staff Potter had stepped up to take command of the joint force.

The next seven months had been a blur of combat for the young man. His initial victory had opened an unexpected window for the Ally forces to finally advance on a key Soviet position. With time being of the essence Potter was left in command of the forces and ordered to advance on, take, and hold the enemy position until reinforcements could arrive. That battle had lead to another, and another, and so on. Soon the Ally forces had the Soviets in full retreat and the war was nearly over.

When the peace treaty was finally signed in October of 1981 the world released a sigh of relief. The now Auror-Lt. Colonel Potter was given a long overdue leave to visit his wife and nearly year-old son who he had never seen.

While there was an official peace between the two factions many were not pleased with the outcome. Chief among the dissidents was the former Archmage of the Union: Voldemort. He blamed his sudden loss of power and prestige on the upstart Potter and vowed to make him pay. However, Tom Riddle's thirst for power and revenge did not end there. The Dark Wizard had been planning to one day wrestle control of the Union from the muggles before using the Soviet might to conquer the world. Among his preparations for his eventual take-over he had delved into the darkest of the magical rituals: the Horcrux.

On October 31st 1981 Voldemort attacked the unsuspecting Potter family, killing both Auror-Lt. Colonel Potter and his wife. However, when he turned the famed Killing Curse upon their year-old son his plans were shattered. The spell rebounded, and his body was destroyed.

Harry Potter became famous at the age of one for surviving the Killing Curse as well as being the son of the Commander who was instrumental for winning the war.

Only two men, Albus Dumbledore and Alastor Moody, knew there was more to young Harry Potter than his defeat of Voldemort. It would be eleven years of relative peace for the world, but soon events would begin to wake the sleeping Dragon of the Soviet Union and the world would once again face a battle it was never meant to.

    The Challenge:

Write an AU fic based on the summary above, and adapted events from the game "Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2". The fic should incorporate the events leading to Voldemort's Return, the Soviet invasion (altered to the UK rather than US), and Harry's involvement in the war.

    The Rules:

    1. Magic and Technology do not mix in design.
      • This means that guns still fire bullets and wands fire spells. No enchanted tanks or bombers.
      • Neither magic, nor technology, is superior. They are different, and apply differently. Each has a place in the war and while they work together in many cases it is a "side-by-side" rather than "with one-another" situation.
    2. There is a prophecy, but it doesn't have to be the same as in the book.
    3. The Chronosphere technology is still in existence, and so are time-turners. HOWEVER, for the purposes of this challenge they are both limited to the uses actively seen in the game/book.
      • This means the Chronosphere can only be used as an instant-transportation mechanism for non-magical, non-organic units (i.e. Tanks)
      • Time-turners are limited to 12 hours maximum. Wizards can NOT affect the timeline using a time-turner, but could use them for spying, intel. gathering, etc.
    4. The entire sub-plot of "Yuri" from C&C2 should be converted to Voldemort and his elite squad of wizard-soldiers known as "Death Eaters". ;)
    5. The invasion shouldn't take place until Harry's 7th year to correspond with his not being in school in DH.
    6. No DH should be used in this fic. Forget you know about them.

I was going to start of with "No Yuri?", but then I realized that the Imperius Curse pretty much makes his psychic technology obsolete. Excpet, of course, for the use of the Psychic Domiators and Beacons.

The thing that I think most people would find difficult is the invasion- the Soviet Invasion only worked because of America's large area and because of the large attack force. With Britain, the only two ways of an invasion is by air-water which would severely slow down the amount of troops in the prelimanry invasion. After all, in RA2 land forces were pushing up through Central America.

But, with 1997 technology they'd likely be a way around that. And with the use of portkeys and/or apparation then land forces could amass themselves in the Shetland islands and then sneak across for an Invasion of Northen Scotland. But, for the Soviets to invade Britain they'd either have to navigate their way all around the continent or go through Europe.

I'd say that you have done a very cool job on the concept yourself. Would be great to see how it goes!!
