While Rothfuss' prose is what made Kingkiller Chronicles my favorite fantasy series, I can't say I'm too skeptical on the movies and TV Series. A TV series for Kvothe's life while in the University would need a fairly low budget when compared to most Epic Fantasies, it would need great actors though. And reserving the movies for his larges adventures and origin would make sense. Lastly the games would be about Kvothe's untold tales, I think, most of his life as a street urchin, some fights, I honestly don't know.

I'm pretty sure that Rothfuss has said in the past that although the third book will be the end of Kvothe's story, he might continue to write stories in that universe. Just a thought, but maybe the games could take place in the larger world? I haven't read anything about a timeline, so maybe these will be long-term projects coming out along with new books in the universe?

I am hyped for a KingKiller video game, but I'm not sure if they would have the budget to do it well. This would be awesome as a sort of Infamous style RPG. Something like that can't be cheap.

I still think this is Rothfuss using wordplay to mislead. Doors of Stone will be the end of Kvothe's story, but the story of Kote the innkeeper will continue. That is, the 3rd book will finish off the three days of recounting the past, and then we'll have more books dealing with the present.

Pretty sure if Rothfuss tries to write another trilogy it won't be finished before the heat death of the universe.

The TV+cinema thing sounds like the plan that's in the works for Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Or at least, it was in the works; a movie is apparently in preproduction, but I'm not sure if the TV series is still planned.

Like the Dark Tower adaptations, Kingkiller could either be quite amazing or quite poor. I'd hope for the former.

Huh, the blog entry did make me more hopeful. It might be decent after all, at the very least, it sounds good.

Do you really think so? Considering I've been waiting what, three years now for Doors? I'm going to forget that they even exist if his publish rate stays like this. I'm not getting any younger.

Rothfuss writing about the deal is reassuring. I don't think he wrote a blog post about it when he sold the rights to Fox.

They might split the difference and go for a mini series or TV movies.
I just had this idea about the game. At the university, you have to get tested to see how much it cost. What if the game incorporates this? The need to earn money and perform well. In other games, they have all sorts of quests and missions to gain resources or achieve some kind of accomplishment. The need for money and resources would allow the world as a whole to be explored and expanded.

I would imagine they will implement something like this but nothing nearly so complicated. They're going to want people to play it and people don't really try hard on video games anymore. Make it too complicated and they won't buy it. Even though I agree, it's one of the more interesting aspects and Kothes need for money to attend school is what drives him in many of his escapades.

Yeah, I think we'll probably get an action RPG of a sort. Rothfuss will want an old-fashioned super-nerdy RPG and the game studio will shift it towards a more action-oriented direction to be more marketable.

We know the archives have field scrivs getting books from distant lands, I bet the other disciplines have similar assistants gathering resources and other items of interest. There has been a suggestion that there is some kind of conspiracy at the university, so they might have field operatives.

I hope that the game focuses on other characters aside from Kvothe. As syed mentions, the games would be a great opportunity to flesh out some of the less developed aspects of a thriving world. There are so many unanswered questions about the faerie, Denna, Lorren, and the ancient terrible past between the Namers and Shapers. We will eventually know about the ending of Kvothe's story in Day 3 but future stories set in the same world (if any are planned) probably won't be published until the far, far future.

With a video game, they'd be morons not to try and take a page out of the Witcher trilogy.

    1. Fantasy book series?

    2. Unexplored lore?

    3. Potential for continuing the story after the book series ends?

    Check, check and check.

The difference between this and Witcher is this deal has the potential to go all-out Hollywood, in the worst way. CD Projekt RED weren't rushing when they sat down to the drawing board. There was no loud deal, literally no one was expecting a competent Witcher game. No one was expecting a Witcher game at all.

I bet all my nonexistent monies that this isn't the approach being taken here. Right now, there's a group of execs sitting in a large conference room, planning out movies, TV series and games aplenty because Kingkiller YEAH, let's worry about money first before anything else.

That's not to say Witcher wasn't supposed to make money - of course it was. But they did it right, though not without hitting bumps along the way. People have spoken with their wallets, shown that if you do it right, you'll make a great game and a mountain of cash.

TLDR; I'm skeptical at best. If they want to make a Kingkiller game (RPG would be ideal imo), then I shouldn't even be hearing about a gameplay trailer until 2018.

To do a show/movie or a game, the guy has to flesh out the world. This could greatly aid his writing process, helping him with not only his next book, but even more short stories or other books set in this world.

I'd definitely be interested in theory, but must admit some skepticism. Rothfuss' work has always been fairly formulaic plots carried by his fantastic prose. As others have said, I question whether that would carry over to any size screen particularly well and not merely highlight the nonsensical nature of certain of Kvothe's 'problems'.

Unfortunately, the fact that the author is retaining some creative control means little when he has no experience with the medium (writing a guest quest or side character for a game is far different than oversight of an entire game's development, much less a motion picture or television adaptation) and so can be pressured by supposed experts and producers. That the worldbuilding is so very limited outside Kvothe's direct scope also limits the sources for inspiration and/or potential for expansion, which could be another issue in maintaining quality or longevity given Rothfuss' writing speed.

I'll withhold judgment for the moment, but it relies directly on the screenplay writers, directors, and the quality of the actors for this is not to be a flop.

This could be amazing, or it could be shit. I hope it manages to do a decent job, between this, GoT and Shannara...

Like most people here, I'm pretty torn. Rothfuss has some incredible ideas and some terrible ideas. It's fantastic that he's determined to see a faithful adaptation and has confidence in Lionhead, but I just can't see the game working. It's an enormous investment and games usually need to stand alone to do well.
