The in-story reasoning is that cancer, as a disease, reacts with wizards to increase their magical potency while slowly/swiftly killing them.

If you think that's bad, the ending of that story is a doosy.
Someone - coughSnapecough - manages to convince Voldemort that this great, awesome spell will steal Harry's core and make him all-powerful, when it actually transfers Harry's cancer into himself and accelerates the disease to the point of death nearly instantaneously. Then, they all live happily ever after.

Oh, and Pers, I am properly ashamed of myself.

You've got to be fucking kidding me with this title. :facepalm

Anyway. I don't see how anyone could make Harry having some kind of disability a very compelling idea. It seems like it would just lend itself to being an angsty, overly-emotional trainwreck where Harry is even more of a chickenshit that relies on other people and dumb luck to work for him.

Of course, you could have him strive for more independence and such due to this disability, but then you run the risk of overcompensating somehow. And I still wouldn't find it very interesting, unless you had some other kind of hook. Something like...
when Harry Dresden made the deal with Mab to become the Winter Knight so that his crippling spinal injury would be healed.
Translate a similar situation to Harry Potter and I might be interested.

Teatime in the Garden is an One-Shot with a MentallyDisabled!Harry. It's Harry/Ginny (from siye) and has its merrits, but obviously won't be for everyone.

I actually read The Bent Boy (the A Walk To Remember one) and it was sort of decent, at times. I'd rate it around a 2.5/5, despite some clear flaws, which should make it readable enough for fans of the ship. It steers towards a happy ending though, which I think cheapens the plot.

The problem with most of these stories is that Harry either overcomes the disability fairly quickly (usually becoming a better wizard because of it) or the author never really developed any kind of plot beyond the disability.

Broken Beyond Healing. Yeah, the title is pretty forthcoming. This one is from the old days, started in 2002, finished in 2004. Detailed summary with some spoilers:

The first 15-20 chapters are excruciating to get through. Harry is blinded, crippled, tortured - all of that by Vernon. Yeah. It's fucking nasty and will probably make you want to punch your screen and froth at the mouth.

Then Harry becomes a seer ( that was pretty original for the fic's time). Meets a new mentor. Gets a new body. Becomes pretty strong & independent. Kicks some ass. Then it gets a bit weird; starts mixing in some time travel & a dash of alternate dimensions.

So, right. My summary probably makes it sound awful, but it is reasonably well written. From what I remember, a page turner too. If you can get beyond the whole torture thing.

    Obviously, not for everyone.

Good God. Too. Much. Angst. I can't believe no one has taken this idea, and turned it into a good thing, rather than just making it an angst fest. I think I may try my hand at this, and turn it into something decent. Whether I succeed...

I am working with hearing imparied kids since I started to collage. And I can honestly say If the kid doesn't get right kind education they don't grow up right. It is espacially evident as some of these kids gets 2ndary disorders -mostly mental- wich makes it even harder.

Most of the stories written to this genre doesn't even have clue what it is like in real life. I don't read them for that reason.

    How about mentally retarded Harry?

Anyone read a decent fic with that?

I read this fic 5 years. I have somewhat good memories of it.

    *cringe*

I'm not spoiling those memories by checking it out again.

A Different Fate by lordhellebore. Received mixed reviews and is really more about Dudley than Harry.

Yeah, I liked that one, although if you're looking for diabled-but-kickass!Harry, look elsewhere.

The author saw the DLP thread and emailed me about my post. We exchanged a few messages about this and her other stories.

    EDIT 2 Dark Minion:

    Soooo, it's Daredevil!Harry?

That's Katling's "Harry Potter and the Guild of the Night" where Harry almost becomes super!Harry with a katana - err - a sword - which he is able to wield because of his 'mage sight'.

    It really is bad.

And @ Jorm: The genre doesn't contain more slash fics than the rest of the fandom. The list someone linked before gives a false impression with its focus on Harry/Draco/Snape/Lupin.

That's the one I was thinking of; I do remember it being terrible, yes, and that was back when I first started reading fanfiction...

That one with Harry being even battier than Luna is simply just awesome; anyone know if there's a full length, Ravenclaw/Nutty!Harry out there, in the same vein?

Alright, I'll take your word for it.

I won't disagree, most of this is shite, but I think it has some real merit as a plot, what with Harry being disabled, but persevering, and winning despite hat, if only someone could not write slash, and make it good.

I actually want to read this and hope against hope it doesn't result in me drowning in my own body fluids. Do you have a link/name? I'm currently stopping myself from googling 'Illusionist Harry', because if I found it with that, then it would most certainly mean it's utter crap.

As for nutty Harry, there are a few humour/parody fanfictions out there with that premise. I wrote one myself, but I don't actually recommend it.
