Lily Potter!

Why does most everyone from DLP like Lily? This question slapped me in the face today after I read the small post about Harry's respect/like/dislike of Snape in this forum.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that Lily did anything that we or anyone should dislike her for (except maybe being friends with Snape=p). It's just that if you go by what we really know from canon Harry acts more like Lily than he does James. And well I don't have to point out how many posts basically say they hate the way Harry acts in canon.

What I get from canon is that Lily was basically the perfect girl (everybody loved her, is what Lupin said I believe).

There is nothing wrong with that at all. The point I am trying to make is that DLP folks tend to like a little more complicated characters that have some flaws.

James would seem to be the one that most DLP folks would hold up as the character that they would wish Harry would have taken after more (however much you can take after dead people).

Er...I am not counting "looks" in this, so saying Lily was good looking isn't really an argument.

Also, saying Lily was smart/brilliant etc. doesn't seem to work either, as from what we know James was brilliant as well (although, I admit that there isn't as much canon proof pointing to this).

Truthfully, Lily sounds a lot like Hermione without being bossy.

Or, maybe I forgot some tidbit from the books that made me like Lily in the first place, don't know. I was just wondering why other folks here seem to like her so much.

I could follow the others with pointing out the stupidity of the post and threaten you for spelling it Lilly, or I could just answer you...

Truthfully, not many of us would read a Lily Potter centric story, because, frankly, we don't really give a shit about her as a character.

We like her because of the possibilities of a Harry/Lily relationship. Older woman/attractive/redhead/and horribly taboo.

It really just evolved from there. Where most seem to worship her, I could give a rats ass about her if she doesn't bring anything disgustingly taboo to the story.

 

She was a muggleborn who demonstated and applied skill. Harry doesn't. He might take some of Lily's emotional and stubborn determination but he seems to have inherited not natual ability from either parent. She is one of the few important characters we know quite a lot about but the fact she is dead means we Rowling could not misuse her and shove her in our faces. She is a firm reminder of what Harry should have been.

 

I hate redheads. And I hate Mary Sues. Lily fits the bill. You have everyone from Lupin to Snape pining after her ass, she's powerful and she's one of only characters in the book (along with Ginny) who comes away unscathed and without flaws. She's perfect - a Goddess talked about but unseen.

Blech. My mother's not perfect. Parents aren't perfect. Give me a fucking break. A 19 year old knocked up who at age 20 acts like Mother Teresa.

People can enjoy HP/LE or HP/LP - that's fine. But I'd prefer to see the bitch choked.

Btw. I really hate redheads. They're mutations. And they easily freckle and god I seriously would have them all killed.

And I personally prefer Lillian. It still means lily and so the symbolism (if there is any) is not lost.

So I misspelled it, fuck off. Mistakes happen asswipes. And yes I have been here three years. Not everyone gets their rocks off on how many times they can post. I prefer to read what amounts to the best reviews of HP fanfic stories on this forum and have been doing so for a long time.

You wouldn't have got the same reaction to your post had you bothered to spell her name right. One thing DLP prizes above almost all other things is the readability of 99% of the posts here.

Of course, every once in a while we get people like you who are just like every other Ginny fan-thing out there; too bothered with hot Harry/red-headed step-child to get canon spellings right.

I find it incredibly hard to believe you didn't know how to spell her name. You've been a registered user since '05. Fail-troll is failure.

Actually, it was a mistake. And as you pointed out I have been here for three years, so I think I do know how to act.

I will however, admit, that it was a stupid mistake to make. Yet, how someone can compare my bad spelling to liking Ginny is just about the most stupid thing I have ever heard, I mean wtf?

Crap aside, since this thread will apparently become another flame thread, if it could be locked or deleted I would appreciate it unless someone would actually like to answer the questions as to why folks actually do like Lily so much.
