Ever since I've read Circular Reasoning, I've been looking for something either similar to that or to the writing of Stephen King.

    Probably a longshot, here.

What do you mean by "similar to Stephen King"?

I'd assume you're not talking about horror, because he's got a fantastic body of non-horror work.

If someone were to ask me, I'd say that King's most iconic feature is his characters. He can humanise characters like no one else I've read, making fictional people eminently relatable. He breaths life into them and then opens up their inner workings for the audience to see.

He's also disciplined. Knows how to build suspense. Can draw the reader in and keep them turning pages until the climax. But mostly, its the way he executes his characterisation that make a Stephen King story.

What exactly are you looking for, OP? Your question is vague.

Some well-executed horror - like King and good characterisation. Often, when a horror springs up, it's usually a crappy slash!fic or stupid, girly kinda horror fics.

I'm looking for something that you can actually feel - like King's novels. Horror that really gets the blood pumping. And, like I said, Circular reasoning by Swim is a perfect example.

As yak discussed, "writing similar to Stephen King" can mean so many different things.

Of all HP fanfic authors I know, the wordsmithing of Joe (Hero Trilogy, Wastelands of Time, etc.) is most like that of Stephen King - or rather, like certain parts of King. Joe directly borrowed some turns of phrase and structural elements and even thematic concepts from King's work, particularly the Dark Tower series.

But in other ways, Joe is not like Stephen King. For instance, I'm not aware of any predilection for horror from Joe. And the story that borrowed the most from King's body of work, the Hero Trilogy, was also the least polished part of Joe's repertoire.

Thanks, guys. I've read hero trilogy, just gotta read wastelands, heartlands and Gunslinger and the Mage.

Evil Be Thou My Good is a good little horror story. I don't consider it to be much like Stephen King though (though really I don't like most of King's work that much anyway).

Thanks, Ched. Read that one before long time ago. It was okay, but it's not the reality angle I'm heading for. NVM, though.

Probably have to look in the Sick and Perverse forum if I wanna creep myself the fuck out.

Comparing the experience you get reading a Stephen King novel to some arbitrary HP fanfiction... are you out of your mind?

There are a few very high quality works in this fandom and there are some authors who could (and do!) sell their original work professionally... but Stephen King is the master of the modern novel, the wordsmith of horror and the author of pieces like "Shining", "Desperation", or "IT".

Calling for HP fanfiction that is "like" a SK work... that's as if you would want to read Naruto through the lense of Alan Moore. Nearly impossible.

You guys might disagree with my high opinion of SK, but calling for HP fanfiction with "smilar writing" to his is still ridiculous.

A similar style of writing does not necessarily mean a similar level of skill - so no, it isn't ridiculous for someone to ask for fanfiction similar to King's works. Especially when it's just being used as a shorthand for "good horror, not generic Slasher #2308".

That said, I've never read any of King's works, so I couldn't say how similar they are, but I second 'Evil Be Thou My Good' and also recommend its sequel 'All Problems Solved'. If you can ever find any of ManicR's works anywhere, they wrote a good number of horror oneshots as well - unfortunately, all of their works appear to have been removed from FF.net, and I can't find them elsewhere.
