I'm craving a decently written tragic tale. One that doesn't get too bogged down in angst. Are there any fics that meet this criteria? I'd prefer Harry be the main character.

It's a hard thing to come by. I know a few people's who's stories will be a tragedy, but it could be awhile before they reach that point.

I'd second this query, and I'm trying to think if I ever encountered something like it, but all I can come up with are a few romance type of stories with no happy ending that I read ages ago. If you want, I can try and dig them up for you; but I think they were pretty heavy with the angst.

Any story out there where Harry fails in the war against Voldemort, or only achieves a pyrrhic victory?

There was this one story where Harry joins Voldemort in order to get close enough to him to assassinate him, and to do that he had to lose most of his morality. Hermione found out, and the only solution to that problem was to get her to join his side, not Voldemorts, but his specifically, with her own special mark. In the final fight, she ends up getting killed by an Order member, and afterwards, Harry laments and stuff about he sacrificed everything to defeat Voldemort, and he gets repaid by having his girlfiend killed by the very people he was helping. I forget the name of the story, and I lost all my bookmarks, but I remember it being semi-decent.

If anything in HP fanfiction qualifies as "tragedy", this is it. It's well written and full of interesting ideas and I even liked Snapes role in it. There's a DLP thread too:
    The Golden Age

@Anarchy I would be interested in a name for the fic you recced. Sounds pretty good IMHO.

I considered posting the Golden Age, but decided against it because it isn't a "traditional" tragedy, but more of an ironic one. Still, I suppose it works.

The Substitute is a truly "tragic" story.

The Unforgiving Minute is actually suitably tragic if you look past the layers of violence and gore.

The Wise One trilogy has a tragic ending if you look at it sideways, though I couldn't actually force myself to read the last chapter(s?), the story nosedived so badly.

Steps Far From Paradise... isn't tragic, exactly, but it's got enough dark themes and moral ambiguity to suffocate a small whale.

Edit: And oh yeah, the Sacrifices Arc has tragedy here, there, and everywhere. Of course, it's also slash and has angst like woah, but if you're willing to look past that...

I lost the bookmark for it when I reformatted my computer, and it would takes years to find it on ffn. However, if you really want to find it, you could probably dig through all the old story search threads I've posted in and you'd probably find it as I know I've suggested once before in times long past.

Eh, just found it after a lot of digging. I was bored. I cannot verify the quality of the fic.

Have to agree with all of these. The Goldn Age is great, though more than a few DLPers will loudly disagree. It's more of a deconstruction than a tragedy though.

And YES, The Wise One turned to shit at the end, and I didn't finish the denouement part either. It had so much potential, and then tanked.

The Substitute and Unforgiving Minute are both excellent tragic stories and I cannot recc them highly enough. As with TGA, the reviews on DLPER were mixed for The Substitute, but I found it just about perfect in its execution and resolution.

I came into this thread planning to post that all one need do to find tragedies would be to go to FFN and search for "Harry/Draco." That'll give you about a billion tragedies right there, regardless of the plot.

I've read the HHr story where they pose as Death Eaters, but can't recall the title right now. It was pretty good but yeah, the angst was strong in that one.

What Lies Beneath is sort of a tragedy, at least I remember thinking so last time I read. It's certainly not that cheerful. But it's in my top five favourites ever, no doubt.

The Phoenix and the Serpent has a great tragic part. Though the tragedy isn't about Harry.

What is in a soul is similar to the Substitute and could have been a really great story as it had all the elements. Too bad it's incomplete and the last chapter decisions are a bit weird. But worth reading the few chapters.

And how. The story of Dahlia and Volarius is about as tragic as it gets.

I wish the story hadn't been abandoned.

For the first (and almost certainly the last) time I'll actually agree with Portus in recommending The Golden Age. While it has its (many :p) issues it's certainly well-written and a tragic story.

Not sure if The Substitute is the same story I'm remembering, but if its it certainly fits the bill as a decent tragedy (although I would hesitate to call it really good).

Unforgiving Minute is absolutely the cream of the crop. And Tragedy, Mine Alone, is a great tragic one shot.
