So I think it's no secret to the people who talk with me often that I'm really into electronic music. It started slow, with me listening to some trance hits from Armin's show and going to raves with friends to have fun. Then I went to Lightning in a Bottle with Ash and Lamora. And holy shit. I found my third great love of music. (The first two being the classical I played as a kid and the second being the alt. rock I listened to while growing up. But that's not the point.)

The point of this thread is for bass music recommendations. I mean all bass music.

Post your Psytrance, your House hops, your Acid Glitch, your Drumstep, your what-have-you.

As for me, I have a ton of stuff for you, now.

Bass You Can Feel in your Lungs
We're going to start with my favorite artist of all time: Gramatik.

Gramatik is an artist who blends Brooklyn with electro-funk in a way that makes him untouchably awesome.

Give Uprising a try and tell me it's not great. It's probably my favorite track of all time. But that's not all. The most recent EP he's released, #digitalfreedom is beyond amazing, with huge industrial and dubstep influences that will blow a dancefloor away. Gramatik has the ability to be epic, to blend funky and nostalgic, to be deep in way so many artists aren't, to find the old Brooklyn Dungeon Sound, to be chilled out as fuck, and to tear out bangers like no tomorrow.

Gramatik is part of the Pretty Lights music label, which is probably the foremost in the country when it comes to cutting edge bass music.

That allows me to segway into a list of artists from there that I absolutely love.

The first among equals (well, somewhat equals) would be Pretty Lights himself, a voice in bass music that has influenced the scene like few others before him.

He has the astonishing ability to think of the most amazing things (and no, before you ask, that was before Levels. Avicii doesn't hold a candle to him), blend all types of other music into his style, and make the dopest remixes I have ever heard. Perhaps, out of all the artists on the TRON Legacy OST remixes, he was the most qualified. It's very difficult to link his work because he doesn't produce single hits that are amazing as much as a whole body of work that's just great. On this note, go check out his Soundcloud.

Another favorite from that label is Paper Diamond. He has a stylistic understanding of bass music that hits your soul. His work is very well measured, powerful, and superior in the blending of winter bass and glitch.

I could go on - Michal Menert and his amazing production skill. Whenever I listen to him, I'm reminded of better things - late night despairing-and-studying music for me. There's Eliot Lipp, who can tell a story with his music.

Now that I've talked about the Pretty Lights label, it's time to move to the left coast, where glitch, free love and acid rules the scene. Of course, among my favorite artists in that area is the Glitch Mob. They're really gaining popular traction right now, and I'm really glad for that. With their astonishing ability to be epic beyond belief, I'm not surprised. Everything from their Drink the Sea album is good, but a few tracks really stand out to me. Their works have been mixed in new and interesting ways by the likes of Beats Antique, Kastle, and... oh, you've probably never heard of them. ;)

An old member of the Glitch Mob who left over musical differences features a far more raw sound that provides face breaking bass. His name is Kraddy, and happens to be one of the most talented artists I know of. Your mileage may vary on a bunch of his stuff, but everyone appreciates a bit of porn once in a while, and most of his work just reaches a standard that few other artists will ever come close to.

Another member of the west coast movement is the acid crunk superhero Sugarpill. He releases really powerful remixes. And his original work is even crazier. He is one of the few artists that can boast a sound that's never been heard before him.

Of course, if I were to talk about acid crunk, I'd have no right to leave An-ten-nae out of the discussion. He's possibly one of the best living DJs out there (not my own words!). He's a funny guy, completely unafraid to show his talent.

Let's move on a bit, to a favorite shared with me by Insecta and Ash - GriZ. He's just released a new solo album, with some of the best hits I've heard in a long time. Also, he's touring with Gramatik next year. Which I won't miss for all the world. He has melodic ability like very few artists I've seen.

One of the artists featured in one of the GriZ links was Dominic Lalli, who also goes by the name Big Gigantic. He's easily one of my favorites. His electrojazz bass is unmatched, as is his skill on the saxophone. Seriously. It is interesting to note that my favorite song by Gramatik, Uprising, samples Big Gigantic's Stand Up.

Now let's talk about slightly more mainstream, more melodic (by that I mean major-minor keys and not jazzy or dissonant stuff). A favorite act of mine is Ratatat, which some of you have undoubtedly heard of. They're from Brooklyn and they make the sickest hip hop remixes. It's what got me into listening to rap to begin with, actually. But their solo beats are arguably even better. Check this shit.

Since we're further into the mainstream at the moment, I think it's a fantastic time to talk about Porter Robinson, a twenty year old producer of electrohouse. His hits are undeniably catchy, and when his EP was released, it actually broke beatport because everyone wanted to buy it.

I will forever associate Porter with Knife Party, despite the fact they share nothing more than a remix, because I saw them back to back at Electric Zoo. Knife Party is the child of Rob Swire, whose absolutely brilliant and relevant. His dubstep has brought a huge following for the genre from people who used to listen to his other act.

His other act is, in my opinion, better than Knife Party. A drum and bass outfit known as Pendulum. Famed (and rightly so) for The Island, a daring adventure into the genre, Pendulum's understanding of how to get a crowd wild is amazing.

When we speak of multi-act artists, Feed Me comes to mind almost immediately. With some of the strangest and most catchy tunes I've heard from any electrohouse/dub artist, he certainly holds a place on my recommendations list.

But enough with the electrohouse stuff. I haven't said a word about Trance yet! My very favorite trance artist is Gareth Emery, who has some of the best-to-listen-to shit I have ever heard. I think his music is rather self-explanatory.

But you really can't talk about Trance without talking about Armin Van Buuren. He has managed to turn the genre from something you'd listen to in a comparatively small party with a somewhat skilled DJ to a stadium affair that only the best can spin at. And he is, without a doubt, the best. A person that deserves mention in the Armin section is Andrew Rayel, who's been on his music label for several years, and produced a hit that Armin plays on his podcast (possibly the most famous EDM podcast ever) very damn often.

Another of my favorite Trance artists is Orjan Nilsen, whose music has always managed to touch me (quite innappropriately :3). His work with Armin has been noted.

I'd be remiss in not mentioning Above and Beyond in this discussion. I don't enjoy them quite as much as the artists I've already mentioned, but that doesn't mean they aren't damn good at times.

And, to move in a more psychedelic direction, Infected Mushroom is crazy as fuck. Because holy shit, that shit messes with your mind like nothing in the world.

And then, there's Paul Oakenfold, who's a superstar of production that ranks as one of the most influential producers of all time. When he helps artists along, they succeed. Meanwhile, his own stuff is pretty damn good as well.

But I don't know too much about Trance. I'm waiting for Paimon, Jangel and Syao to laugh at me and link me to works that will blow my mind. Yeah. Please do that. I love the genre. xD

It seems as though now's a good time to talk about superstars, the producers who have influenced more artists than nearly anyone in the world. Of course, the first name that comes to mind is Daft Punk. They're not my favorite, but without a doubt, they're more musically capable than any artist that has ever lived. I can say this without exaggeration. There is not a single artist in this list that hasn't been influenced by them in some way. Just listen. They're so damn good that when I played their TRON Legacy OST, my mom (who only listens to classical music) enjoyed it. They just understand music.

Continuing along this line in great influences is the Crystal Method, somewhat behind the scene in music, but their fingers are everywhere. Their shit is fantastic. :O

And now is the dreaded moment when I talk about electropop. David Guetta, I have a huge soft spot for his songs - people hate on him for no reason, in my opinion, because he's never pretended to be anything other than he is.

A rising star in this electropop thing is Calvin Harris. His songs are fun, catchy, he plays really well live according to everyone I know who's seen him, and I enjoy his work - much more as pop than anything.

Let's get silly. Duck Sauce. I love them with all my heart, mostly for Barbra Streisand. Hahaha. They're ridiculous and funny and so much fun to listen to.

Perhaps this has been a little taxing for you to read. I know what we need! A bit of Girl Talk! But really. We're really skirting on the edge of pop now, and this is only going to go further. xD

One of the links on the Girl Talk section features the bass line and melodic line from one of my favorite electropop bands of all time - Phoenix. Their early work was kind of good, but their Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is certainly one of the most complete albums I've ever heard.

While we're on that Eurotrash flow, let's talk about Stromae. Their Alors On Danse has gained quite a following, including from Kanye. Don't look the Kanye version up. It's positively terribad. As you can probably expect, they have other songs that are great.

More Eurotrash, see: Jus†ice. I don't really know how to comment on this stuff. It's catchy and easy to listen to, if a bit shallow, I guess.

Now, it's time for American stuff. xD MGMT is certainly one of my favorite acts around, with some of the most amazing and recognizable lines I've ever heard.

On that note, I always associate them with M83 because they're pretty much right next to each other on my list of music. Whatever. They're damn good too, and also gaining a bit of a following.

My last (I promise!) electropop rec is the Gorillaz, who actually count as trip hop to be honest. Everyone's heard them, but I still thought it would be unjust to not mention them. I love them, personally. Damon Albarn's a hero of mine.

That was exhausting. How about some Dubstep now? All hail the Bassnectar, because we can. I saw him live at Lightning, and he was aighte, but there's no denying some of his biggest hits.

I'd like to talk about Zedd now, whose Spectrum remains one of the most powerful tracks to grace the genre. He does a ton of fun stuff and is all around has some of the most enjoyable dubstep I've heard.

And while we're on the Zedd flow, Zeds Dead (different Zed than Zedd xD) is also fantastic. It's actually among the first dub artists that I listened to seriously - Ash linked him to me when I first met her and the topic of music came up on irc. Don't remember what she linked me anymore. :(

And now, the moment you've been waiting for. Well, actually, no. We'll get to that bit in a second.

EDM hits in the current day. This is stuff that you will basically hear at raves, in the club, what have you. I have a much longer list than the stuff I'm linking you to right now, but this, I believe is the very best of it.

And now is the moment that you've (Ash) been waiting for. These are the Soundcloud Jams, shit that nearly no one has ever heard, sitting around on soundcloud, waiting for some big name to discover them. Some of the tracks are flawed in some ways, but I do believe that they represent the very best of the indie bass genre.

    Highlights are these tracks.

    Ashaya, it's your move.

    Lungs, Lungs, Lungs.

This is the bass music thread, you named it yourself. Not the trance, electropop thread. So gtfo with that shit, or rename the thread.

Now, first off, there is one genre you neglected. Ghetto Funk. Pretty much everything on that Soundcloud will make you happy.

Some stars of the Ghetto Funk scene: Featurecast, Funkanomics (one of my favorites), Basement Freaks, and Stickybuds.

All of that music will make you happy too.

Of course, any mention of eclectic funky music requires a mention of the king: Opiuo. How can you resist the funk?

Now a segue into my favorite of all of the new acts I've found: Artifakts. They are similar to Pretty Lights in their awesomeness. Their latest album, Like This If, is an amazingly well crafted album for a duo that just started making music together in MARCH. They are likely about to open for Pretty Lights, and I predict they will get a lot bigger, very quickly.

Another up-and-comer is The World Class Art Thieves or WorldCAT for short. They do a bit of everything. Some dubstep, some trap, some funkyness, some remixes of Rhythm of the Night, yadda mean. Looking forward to some new releases from them, but at the moment my favorite is this set.

What would a list of new arrivals that are blowing up be without TRiLL MURRAY. There's been a lot of speculation that this is an already well known artist masquerading under a different name....who knows. What I do know, is that he is good. His is the style of 808 bass, with trap thrown in. Sexy bass, I call it.

Another artist similar to him, but one I think I like more, is M!NT. Basically everything I said about TRiLL MURRAY also goes here.

Moving away from trappy-bass....The Polish Ambassador requires a mention. He is so fucking prolific. You can download his 9 album, 30+ remixes, 9+ hour discography for FREE, so that's pretty rad. His latest album, Superpowers, just crushes it. It's the exact definition of sexy glitchy bass.

While we're on the subject of glitchy bass, let's talk about Dubvirus. His remix of Lovely Day by Bill Withers is one of my current favorite songs. Put that song on, and see how long a bad mood lasts!

Now, we can't talk about bass music without bringing up MartyParty. His more recent stuff hasn't been that amazing, IMO, but he used to be the king of purple music. This is my favorite of all of his mixes, and relistening to it, it makes me miss the old MartyParty. :( So goddamn good.

Now, the token female, Ill-Esha....though I wouldn't say that to her face, as she'd likely stomp your face in. She is loosely affiliated with the Headtron crew, which is what I'm about to go into. Ill-Esha's style is heavy bass mixed with sexy downtempo tunes. She's a bit of a mixed bag.

Now, artists currently on or affiliated with Headtron.
My favorite: Andreilien, formerly known as Heyoka. His live show is one of my favorites ever. You either like him or you don't. I describe his tunes as the music that would play at a carnival in space. Thra Ka remix, which I love.
Next, Gladkill. He just went on tour with Bassnectar and Gramatik, so....that says it all. This guy makes some of THE sexiest music. I can't listen to Our Differences from his latest EP without wanting to make babies. Unf unf.
Another Headtron star is Russ Liquid. He plays trumpet, piano, saxophone, and flute. Dope.
Other Headtron artists: Sugarpill (who isn't acid crunk, he's crunky glitchy bass, LUNGS), Nit Grit, Stephan Jacobs, Jupit3r, jOBOT, Goldrush, and ChrisB.

I'm going to use this as my cut-off point, my next post will go into the amazing realm of world bass, which is bass with Middle Eastern, Indian, WORLD influences, obviously. This is bass music with violins and beauty.

Will need a combo-breaker, so let's hope you aren't out of music, Lungs.

Defining Bass as "electronic usage of the bass as an instrument" has worked for me in the past.

I should have taken NiT GriT, I has discography. xD

Psh, Ash, I'm going to beat you down. IN SUPER SMASH BROTHERS.

Neither of us mentioned R/D, for whatever reason. o_O

I have some weird ass shit incoming, brah.

How about a set that I linked Ryo, which he loves? The speech from the great dictator at the start of it gives me chills.

Unfortunately, some of us are machines and not men, like that girl Florence and her little posse. But even machines are capable of love when they have some Pumpkin.

See, the problem is, Ash, you're just some Random Rabble with far too much good taste in music for your own good. And I Alone am the Master of Gyroscopes, bish.

Do I sound incoherent to you, maybe like a 21st century schizoid man?

Don't worry for my sanity. I just need a Project that allows me to explore all my Aspects.

But if you think that beating my first post was easy, Ash, you're wrong because the princess is in another Kastle.

But why are we even fighting, Ash? There's so much Love and Light in the world!

We have to stop being bad, and start being FreQing Nasty!

Let's go back in time, back to when Mary Ann Hobbes mixed on BBC radio and brought us the beginnings of dubstep. Though it's certainly gotten better over the years, in my opinion.

This ain't all I got, but it's all I'm willing to give, for now. Maybe I'll be more amenable when it gets closer to winter.

Lungs, you mentioned knife party yet, failed to mention the house greats, such as Alesso, Swedish House Mafia, Avicci, Afrojack and Tiësto. Tiësto definitely counts as bass, some of his tracks are incredible "dirty", Maximum Crazy for example. You also can't forget Zedd, Nero, Skrillex and Steve Aoki and since they classified as dubstep I would say that they definitely bass heavy and should be mentioned.

I don't like any of them except for zedd and i mentioned him in the first post. Alesso is on one of the essentials links. I kind of enjoy Swedish House but they don't deserve a mention. Tiesto is the most overrated DJ of all time and armin kills him everywhere it counts. If you couldn't tell from my Pretty Lights post, i think Avicii is a joke. He can't play live, and has produced one good song over the span of his lifetime. Steve Aoki and Afrojack don't know how to do anything but fuck around on stage and throw cake at people. If you've heard on track by Skrillex you have heard all of them. Nero plays at decibel zero, and nothing else, which leaves me to believe he's both deaf and not Beethoven.

I would have been contrite if you said Deadmau5, because the only reason I didn't mention him is because I don't like his work personally - he's certainly talented.

Have any other bad producers for me to shit on?

Well, I imagine you can feel most music in your lungs, Lungs, considering your tendency to go all the way up to the mosh-pit speakers and tongue-fuck random women while smoking.

I'm fairly sure at least half of your brain is liquefied goo on the grounds back in Silverado, especially after Bassnectar. I bass this on the fact that you thought it was cool that the speakers were blowing the ash off your lit cig at ten feet. Idiot.

That's why other people need to join in, share your favorites via links and descriptions as we did.

This isn't meant to be Lungs' and Ash's circlejerk.

Also, Lungs, I know you enjoy making terrible plays on words (and women), but try to also give people an idea of the artist's style of music. Giving Pumpkin no introduction except for a convoluted paragraph is a great injustice.

So, what you need to know about Pumpkin....his latest album is entitled Love Letters, and doesn't that just say it all. He has the kind of music that you sing along to giddily, with a...light sound, I guess. It's just plain pleasant. That album is free, BTW, so snap that up. He has a silly remix of Mna Mna by the Muppets, which I love. Also free.

There are two other artists you mentioned, Lungs, that I think also bear a closer look at.

Love and Light. Their crunked out remixes are incredibly distinct. You hear one Love & Light song, you can identify another. Lungs linked my current favorite, but neglected to share such amazing remixes as Queen's Fat Bottomed Girls, Doobie Brothers' Black Water, and Playa Nights (that's playa as in the desert, Black Rock Crunk FTW). They have a TON of other remixes on their Soundcloud, so check it out.

Now Random Rab, what do you say about Random Rab....that his music is fucking incredibly beautiful. That is all.

Anyway, this wasn't the post I promised, but I had to correct your injustices, Lungs. And now I have to run.

So. Electroniky stuff. I got some of that.

Mount Kimbe. It's post-dubstep, or proto-Bass, or some other bullshit label. Low key, crisp electronica. Before I Move Off, Carbonated.

Crystal Castles. Rave meets the Cure. Celestica, Baptism.

Aphex Twin. Beautiful, abrasive electronica. Really hard to summarize, considering he did both Avril 14th and Window Licker. Flim, Alberto Baslalm

Death Grips. Schizophrenic rap-rave-noise. Guillotine, I've Seen Footage, Hacker.

Caravan Palace. Daft Punk meets Django Reinhardt. Clash, Jolie Coquine.

The Avalanches. Their album Since I Left You is one of my favorite albums of all time. Thousands of vinyl samples mixed into a blend of hip-hop, pop, R&B, jazz... Since I Left You, Frontier Psychiatrist.

Elite Gymnastics. Melancholic pop built on the foundations of 90's rave, kinda. Has made some bitchin mixtapes involving k-pop and whitehouse. Sa Sa Samoa (Elite Gymnastics Remix), So Close to Paradise

Reggie Watts. Funky, funny, weird ass beat-boxing/looping. I Just Want To, Binary Existence.

And here are a bunch of awesome k-pop songs. Mr. Simple. Knock Out. Gee. Shock. Tonight.

    Alright so wow.

I'm with Oz; I thought I knew some decent electronic music, but looking over these posts has made me slightly scared to share. I'm not really into soundcloud which probably explains why the only names I recognize here are the more mainstream, so thanks I guess for posting some good ones. If I find anything decent that's not here I'll be sure to share.

Try Madeon he's got some Awesome Electro House stuff. A great place to start would be Pop culture.

For some great drum n Bass check Noisia Split the atom and tommy's theme.

For some more chill house stuff there's Mango-goodmorning track.

Lungs; Mostly good shit (rather, I knew of pretty much all of them and I approve) apart from David Guetta who I can't really bring myself to like. Plus you hated on Nero and Avicii and snubbed SHM which isn't cool but I'll let that slide if only for Infected and Pendulum.

I'd like to bring your attention to Netsky (Fantastic DnB producer from Belgium, possibly my favourite along with Pendulum) and Memro, an extremely talented producer (I guess he's 17 or so now?) that's been putting out tracks since he was 14.

Memro - Trick of the Tail http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Wo0BDFupqo

    Netsky - Come Alive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0z7omu2UNVA

Since Bass Music is only one of many genres that I listen to, I don’t have as in-depth knowledge as some, nor am I as familiar with obscure artists and sub-genres. Because of this I tend to just subscribe to channels on youtube with a high ratio of quality music and add to my collection from there. If you don’t know a lot about bass music or are just getting into it, you should definitely check them out.

-Monstercat has a playlist for different sub-genres that are filled with good stuff.
-Spread the Jams uploads a few good songs each week with a free download.
-Going Quantum’s Glitch Hop, Dirty Electro and Liquid Dubstep mixes tend to be quite good.

Okay, so most of what I like has been represented already so I’ll add the couple of artists that haven’t. I’m not the greatest at explaining music, so I’ll just let it speak for itself.

    DotEXE is one.
    Hipster Cutthroat
    Kill it with Fire
    Monster
    Turn On The Radio

    Ephixa is another.
    Ideekay
    Division
    Turret Error
    Audiocidity
    Dragon Roost island

Slightly different from the other stuff in this thread... less gritty, somewhat more mainstream. However, some of the stuff I've been listening to recently that could come under the electronic music umbrella:

Sub Focus Feat. Alpines - Tidal Wave Drum and Bass with female vocals. Interesting accent on the singer.

Krewella - Dance/dubstep group from Chicago. Again, female vocals. Selected tracks: Play Hard, One Minute, Come and Get It, Alive. Also of note is their one hour mix featuring their own tracks as well as others: Troll Mix.

Someone who everyone here probably knows about, but hasn't been mentioned: Coyote Kisses. High energy bass with good melodies. People probably know them from their Star Wars Binary Suns Remix but my personal favourite is their remix of Gotye's Somebody I Used to Know.

A slightly more chill out sound is Crystal Castles' Affection. Again, female vocals, quite haunting sound.

Also worth a listen is Dada's Life Feed the Dada. An eccentric dubsteppy duo with catchy vocals. The video is really weird.

Electro-swing lovers may be interested in Barely Legit. Organic Clown High is a good example of their stuff.
