Well, you forgot the by far most probable theory:
There is no theory or background-story, JKR just invented things as she went along, so there is no place for logic or deduction.

 

I agree with Drunken Jedi. Though I'd agree with anyone who has been drinking--sad pathology of mine, I'm afraid. Given how from one novel to the next, her characters seem to go OOC (e.g. OOTP Tonks vs. HBP Tonks), it's likely that JKR didn't have plans beyond writing something just good enough to make a few quick pounds.

There's probably at least a dozen \fics out there that are better resolutions to her story than her last two novels. And OOTP was the kind of angsty Harry crap that really bores me. (Maybe when I was 15 I might have found it poignant. But in my 30s, I just want to grab the kid and shake him until he gets a clue--hell, he killed someone with his bare hands when he was 11. Why get so pissy over someone else killing someone he barely knew when he's 14?)

 

Well, yes, of course that's the most LIKELY possibility, but where's the fun in THAT discussion?
