Although JKR has said that there will be no universitites in the books, I think that magial universities are a good idea because they would allow those that want to further their magical education can apply to the universities instead of having to self-teach themselves. This would also allow people to be more prepared for the magical work force rather than just having 7 years of magical education.

Without them it would mean that everyone had the same level of knowledge and skill which is rather strange sine Dumbles specialises in some areas which would obviously need further study.

Well, there is always the option of learning stuff by your self and without formal instruction. That could be the way that Dumbles got his stuff. Or he became the apprentice of someone.

Or you can get a job which requires more training like Auror, Curse breaking, or Healing. I think Rowling meant there is no post secondary school of general learning, after Hogwarts everything is specialized.

Yep i agree with you Necrule. Have to take into consideration that the wizarding world is also suck in the late to early 18-1900's and universities wouldn't appeal to them.

Well, what about the muggleborns that were those people that at age 10 were aloready thinking of what college they were going to go to? I mean, really, what about the muggleborns that would expect to go to a university aftter the initial education? Even if they wanted to build one, though, the Ministry would probably just laugh them off... Anyways, even if they are stuck in the 18-1900's, I do believe that there were colleges and universities then, if I remember my history class correctly. While it might not appeal to most of them, it still might appeal to some.
