When he changes his mind at the last moment and opens the tomb, he discovers that Antigone has hanged herself. Haemon, son of Creon and lover of Antigone commits suicide with a knife when he learns of her death. Queen Eurydice kills herself in despair over her son's death.

Ismene, as the law-abiding citizen of the four, is left alone to mourn all the dead (though in one account, she does get murdered).
