They've found ways past that. Suppose each book has a code you need to log in to some online site to do exercises. This code can't be reused nor shared, meaning every student has to buy the book new.

 

So browse a book at the store, nab the code, and enter it before someone can buy the book it came from.

 

Those things tend to be in shrink wrapped plastic amid the potentially loose sheets of paper, so if you did that then it'd be tied to your name. The heinous college textbook cartel has it all figured out.

Seriously, my freshman calc "textbook" was a stack of thin three hole punched paper for $150, the homework code was on a cd somewhere in the middle and I had to get my own binder to put it in. Capitalism ho!

 

The worst part, for me, what that after I bought the used book (Intro to Modern Physics) for $350, I found a pdf of it online for free. But I couldn't return the book because they only gave me a week to return it, and that week ended before class even started.

 

Fuuuuuuucking hell. I don’t think I even spent $475 in total for all of the books I had to buy in my 5 years at university.

I mean, wtf. I have heard some horror stories from friends who studied/taught in the US, but that is something else.

I know it's stupid but sometimes stupid humor is just what strikes my fancy.

 

Yeah, but I don’t have any Australian friends (edit: or friends who studied there), so in this case, the US with their equally ridiculous system had to do.

Back in 07-08 I was spending over $150 a book in Australia. Absolute robbery...

Uni itself costs nothing in comparison though. Swings and roundabouts.
