Because I'd never heard of the song or the artist before the meme, nor have I ever met anyone who did. It's entirely possible I and my social circle from 12 years ago just wasn't in the target demo so it slid right past us, but the default assumption is that it just wasn't all that popular before it went viral.

This is definitely a difference from across the pond. The song was basically only known from the meme in America to the point where there were news reports explaining where the song came from because we were only exposed to it via the meme
