I had pretty much the same reaction. My parents went vegetarian a couple years ago, and they were the only ones I knew who'd make lasagna. The after a couple years of vegetarian lasagna, I had it with real meat and I almost wept at how much better it was.

 

To be completely honest, I can't really taste the difference between faux vegan meats and actual meats. I've had quorn chicken, quorn lasagne, vegan sausages and even vegan bacon. It tastes pretty much the same as the real thing.

I could go Vegan but I go out to eat too much and like a fraction of restaurants offer vegan meat.

I think it’s a time thing. I definitely used to be able to. But with time I stopped noticing it, except in the way that two chicken dishes might taste different somehow, slightly. It’s not an aberrant taste anymore. Tastes like a meat to me.

 

After prolonged periods without encountering the meat tastes, your tongue literally loses those receptors.

Being a regular old omnivore, but who has tried vegan alternatives on a whim, I can confidently say they're usually absolutely a poor reflection.

 

I prefer vegetarian pasta and lasagne. Spinach and ricotta lasagne is the best comfort food on Earth.

 

Sometimes, when I'm protein deficient, I'll love the taste of meat. Mostly, though, it's not any better or worse than faux meats. Just different.

 

As a lifelong meat eater, the only faux meat I've ever had that actually tastes like meat is the Impossible brand ground beef. But that's not saying much because while it does taste exactly like meat, with only a slight texture difference, the meat it tastes like is Burger King meat.

 

I've had a lot of luck with vegan hot dogs being able to pass for the real thing ... but then these are hot dogs we're talking about. And even then, they more pass as the kinda cheap low-quality hot dogs, not the big tasty premium ones I like to get.
