True. I think it's more than once the Shield Charm has first been successfully cast it works on minor to moderate hexes, but when it has been mastered it can defend against powerful curses as well.

I personally think it'd be a good idea to re-open the Grimoire or create a new one, providing that a few ground rules are set first. A specific format, use of Latin or Greek for incantation, a relatively short but coherent description, no mention of magical power levels or magical cores and the spells are kept realistic.

...The point of the shield charm is that it reacts to your intentions. Any caster can get it to work in any way that would protect them from the incoming spell, all it takes is focus. Define mastering. Define moderate hex. Define minor hex. What makes a curse powerful?

Whilst it could be said that a master of the shield charm is someone with a wide variety of options in the way they can cast the spell ready at hand. However, that is anyone who can cast the spell. Making the term mastery redundant.

Looking at the HP lexicon, it seems that the Protego spell has multiple effects...as long as you change the incantation.

Protego horribilis (pro-TAY-go ho-RIB-i-lis) "protego" L. to defend + "horribilis" L. "horrible, terrifying"
    Presumably a variation of Protego.

Protego totalum (pro-TAY-go TOH-tah-lum) "protego" L. to defend + "totalum" mediaeval L. "the whole"
    Presumably a variation of Protego.

    • Hermione cast this along with several other protective enchantments on the campsite in the woods next to the old Quidditch World Cup campgrounds (DH14).
    • Casting this spell evidently became part of the routine protective enchantments used on their campsites during the hunt for the Horcruxes, because escaping from the Lovegoods' house, Hermione immediately began running in a circle around her companions, casting this along with other protective enchantments before they set up their tent (DH22).
(Sorry for the color but I can't seem to find the right one! *>.<

    _____

EDIT: Seems Protego can also be used to protect from physical objects/attacks. We can see this in the 5th movie with Umbridge deflecting arrows from the centaur and in DH from Hermion when she separate Ron and Harry.

Yup it says " 'Protego!' she cried, and an invisible shield expanded between her and Harry on the one side and Ron on the other; all of them were forced backward a few steps by the strength of the spell..." HP Deathly Hallows, US paperback edition, pg 309

    ____

"She look as though ready to wrestle it out of Harry's hands and he reacted instinctively 'Protego' The invsible shield erupted between Ron and Hermione: The force of it knocked her backward onto the floor." DH, US hardcover edition, pg. 380

Not really, seeing as Protego Totalum is different to Protego. It's not the intention, it's that incantation that's different, thus making it a seperate spell which is simply based on the regular Shield Charm.

Most spells don't work on intent, they work by using the correct wand movements and incantation along with practice (depending on the talent and determination of the caster).

Yeah, we only know four spells in canon that depend on intent: The Unforgivables and the Patronus.

Read this, it explains it all simply enough that you should be able to understand...

    Bullshit, and inb4Taureshitstorm.

Look, it can (and will, as soon as Taure shows) be argued that nearly *all* spells work on intent to some extent.

You need look back only as far as OotP to see intent in play with regards to the Shield Charm. When the Harry-led gang is surrounded by Death Eaters in the prophecy room at the MoM, Bellatrix tries Summoning the prophecy ball out of Harry's hand. He shouts "Protego" - with no wand movement or even pointing his wand, by the way - and the prophecy ball, which had begun sliding out of his hand, stops at the tips of his fingers. No physical barrier, no Bellatrix being dumped on her ass, etc.

I could list a couple dozen others with a little research or brain-squeezing, but that's one of the most glaring examples right there. Intent is very much a part of it even with immediate-effect spells, not to mention the enormous role intent has on an enchantment such as the jinxed DA roster in OotP, or even better, a curse such as the one Riddle placed on the DADA position.

Sure, there's the argument many people make about Sectumsempra and Levicorpus, but even Sectumsempra said "For Enemies" in the Prince's book, so Harry knew, on some level, that the spell was going to do damage. That it did damage is no stretch to believe, and I'd argue that with knowledge of its purpose, Harry would then be able to fine-tune it to do more specific kinds of damage. The Levicorpus? Well, that's a point in favor of the "no intent needed" crowd, tbh.

And of the unforgivables only the Cruciatus Curse required intent. So its only 2 spells we know of.

TBH, I had planned to edit my previous post as I did realise intent was apparent. I simply meant that, in the example of the shield charm that Mordecai used, someone who just learned the spell wouldn't be able to do protect them from strong spells simply because of the caster's intent. It would require significant practice and/or talent to, as you said, fine-tune the spell to that degree.

Though it all depends on how you define 'intent' in regards to spellcasting in the first place.

No... Moody imposter specifically states that AK requires a true desire for the person's death. I don't know for sure about the Imperius, but since we know that some people are "better" at the spell (Mulciber), presumably it also relies on intent.

Either you believe in magical "power", or you believe that it requires force of will (intent).

I'm not going to say it's solidly intent-only or no intent, but that's not much of a point at all. At this point Harry is probably the most combat-tested teenager around, and he's used Protego quite a few times. Just the same as Dumbledore lighting candles without a wand, it would be easy to presume that magic becomes easier with use. Harry shouted the spell, wand-in-hand, and it worked, but not to its full effects.

That's why you don't see first-year students memorizing spells and wand movements and having huge duels, because they just aren't practiced (among other things).

While I agree that some magic does depend on intent, I think only the finer aspects of this should be assumed for most spells. If you say a spell is all intent, then you could make conjuring the most dangerous magic. If you say no spells are intent-based, then you have rigorous rules and extreme preciseness that we don't see in canon.

Edit at T3t: Maybe fake Moody didn't understand everything about magic, or didn't feel fourth-year students needed to know it, or meant intent when he said power because that's how he is used to speaking.

Apparition is probably the most important intent based spell. While no incantation is never given (there is none?), if your intent is not precise or determined enough, shit gonna get real.

The lexicon does on occasion make mistakes, but I guess this can just be chalked up to JKR being an idiot. Why the fuck would it be apparition...that would lead to unnecessary confusion.

My mind is utterly blown. I remain in denial.

Apparate conjugates into apparation, and Rowling can go fuck herself.
