Probably right, but it is ridiculous for Hand to be still alive. Ward didn't just shoot Hand, he did a double tap afterwards.

Could be icers or something. We're dealing with THE spy agency of the MCU here, I don't think it would be too hard for them to fake her death.

Icers, right. Garrett wouldn't find it at all suspicious that there is no gaping holes in her skull or blood. Nor will the HYDRA mook charged with cleanup.
They are on a plane, this is not a situation where the bad guys can conveniently walk away without dealing with the mess.

No matter how grounded in reality they try and make it, the MCU is still a comic book universe at it's heart. Logic is always going to take a back seat when it needs to.

Didnt ward have an evil older brother, we might end up seeing him at some point?
I can't wait to see the team deal with hydra scum from CA 2, I wonder if we will see the team use stuff from their adventures against the bad guys.

In the well flashback? I always thought that Ward looked like the evil brother, more so then any of the other children in that flashback.

What if Ward is the evil brother, he just has a split personality, or had his mind altered?

He also said that Garret saved him from himself.

The scene in the elevator, despite ending with a double murder, made me chuckle:

    "A little warning next time?"
"Sorry, it was too good a line to pass up."

Had no idea Brett Dalton was a decent actor until this week. Kind of reminds me of the way everyone hated on Anna Torv on Fringe until she started playing Mirror Olivia and everyone realised she could act, too.

Also, Patton Oswalt can do no wrong: "Different picture every day of the week. Wednesday is great if you like topless beaches."

It's a shame the show took so long to gear up and get good. Faster pace, more action, characters getting interesting... if it hadn't taken 20 episodes to get here, it probably wouldn't have lost half its audience.

I think they had to basically give filler until they could get shit properly going after the tie-in with Captain America 2. When you look back at how the episodes progressed, it makes sense I think.

I'm honestly at a loss as to which side Ward really is on at this point. It's both aggravating and intriguing and annoying.

i dunno, if they somehow redeem him and bring him back to shield's side, I'll be pretty disappointed.

My bets of a baddie, he would make a great long term nemesis for the team. If it all turns out to be a ploy... I'll be disapointed.

    ~ Spoilers Incoming Through Episode 18 ~

Okay, so I watched the first eighteen episodes over the last five days or so. Figured I'd leave a review.

I like the show, more than most shows, though I feel that Coulson carries it more or less by himself. This improved with later episodes as other characters became more interesting, but Coulson still carries more of it than he should have to.

My largest issue with the show is simple, at least in my mind, but I'm not sure if I can put it into words.

Too much of the character interaction and growth feels forced. This is especially irritating as it would have been simple to make it feel more organic.

For example: Coulson gets exchanged instead of Peterson and is taken hostage/tortured. His team pretty much flips the fuck out and is all "MUST FIND COULSON SCREW ORDERS" and whatnot.

That in itself is fine, except I didn't feel previous episodes set them all up to have this kind of "bond" for lack of a better word. May perhaps, as she's there to keep an eye on him. Possibly Skye, since he's pretty much taken her under his wing. But I felt like the others should have been more borderline "we should trust the system" and whatnot.

Yet it would have been very easy to show more of a "bond" forming between Coulson and the members of his team. It'd have taken 10 seconds to do a shot earlier on, for example, where Coulson tells Fitz something along the lines of "Hey, I've always got your back." Little things like that to show why these people are incredibly loyal.

It'd be like if Buffy started off with the character interactions as they were in Season 3 as opposed to Season 1.

It's the television equivalent of telling instead of showing. Instead of showing us how much getting a SHIELD badge meant to Skye, we get a line that's more or less "Getting this meant a lot to me you know."

Instead of seeing Skye slowly become competent at agent-type duties, she goes from dropping the cartridge out of her gun in a life-or-death situation, to punching a bag a handful of times, to suddenly infiltrating buildings solo, knocking out armed opposition with little trouble, etc. Again, would a little more of a montage (or at least tips/tricks from Coulson/Ward that she can repeat to herself as she does this stuff) have been too hard to add?

Then Skye gets shot and they go to great lengths to save her. Now I can kind of get that, since it coincides nicely with Coulson's burgeoning need to know what happened in Tahiti, but they still broke into a compound and quite possibly killed two innocent men acting as guards. They might have been there for a reason and had no desire to hurt anyone, just doing jobs, which may have been legit non-harmful jobs.

Actually, the above made me wonder if maybe there was a supernatural component to the whole "SAVE SKYE" bit. An entire town and SHIELD team minus the one dude did die protecting her when she was little. Maybe it's related to her power, whatever that'll be.

But at any rate, yeah. We keep getting these awkward as fuck, let me bash you over the head with my character development moments.

On the plus side, once we got those out of the way, we're pretty much set on how the team interacts with its members for the later (and awesome) episodes.

But I think the first several episodes were fine technically, they just didn't flow for shit, and it would have been easy to make them. Skye seems particularly unlikable and hard to get behind, especially as she just sort of wanders into the team -- stretches suspension of disbelief even for a Marvel Comics based TV show. I do like Fitzsimmons, even if they're a little cliche. Ward is more interesting in later episodes, and I hope he doesn't rejoin the team (happy to trade him for Trip, tbh). May is fine, and it's nice to have another non-20s-or-30s main cast.

Can't wait for episode 19, and I hope it gets renewed. If only because Coulson is a badass.

Nicely put I thought. That's pretty much exactly how i feel about the show.

Though as much as I hope that it'll be renewed, it IS Joss Whedon running it, so yeah. Statistically unlikely. :p

Is Joss really running the show? Or is his name just on it b/c he has input into it? I thought it was the former, with him more or less supervising rather than being deeply involved.

If I remember right his name's attached to it and he made the pilot, but his brother or something is running most of the show.

I might try watching the season again when it's all finished. Might.

I didn't like it at first, but these latest episodes have really grown on me. Give it a shot. Skye is less odious when she's not at the forefront of the drama and Ward... well, his character has developed nicely.

I've never understood the "power over men" mind control powers. Would it work on a gay man? What if you're a lesbian? Bi woman? These are relevant questions; I'd like to know whether I'm susceptible.

I agree with the "telling not showing" feel of a lot of the episodes. Post-Captain America, I was really looking forward to Skye having to grapple with her "freedom versus security" worldview. After all, she started off the series heavily tilting towards the "freedom" side. You'd think she'd have more of a reaction than "Wow, Coulson, I guess you were right."
