Huh, never thought about it that way. I always thought of the trope as being more that men are portrayed as being less in control of their baser instincts -- be those instincts targeted at women, other men, or all of the above and then some.

I.e. In this particular case, Lorelei's powers wouldn't work on a gay man, or a lesbian, or a bi woman. They'd only work on a straight or bi man, b/c she's the object of the affection (and female) and the ability only works on men.

That isn't to say that I agree with the bullshit trope. It just shows up everywhere and I've always interpreted in that sense -- that it shows men as being prey to their baser instincts to a greater degree than women, which magical bullshit can sometimes manipulate.

It's old, frankly. But then again I guess in this case Lorelei is old too. *shrug*

Joss is a producer, which means he has input, but he's a TAD busy writing filming the new avengers movie and probably helping plan the next set of movies. Joss has written an episode here and there, and directed a couple of scenes. His brother and sister-in-law are the primary showrunner/writers.

Women fall prey to baser instincts just as much as men... women just have more common sense than MOST men =P
Speaking as a baby brother of seven older sisters... yeah. I've been trained well LOL =(

Obviously women fall prey to their baser instincts as well. I'd argue that they don't always have more common sense either.

I don't agree with the trope, I've just always interpreted it in the way I mentioned. :p

As for episode 19... I expected not to like it, but it turned out okay.
When I heard that they were going to go and rescue Coulson's old girlfriend I was concerned that it would be because HYDRA was targeting her. That would mean that somehow, despite all the shit going down here in the days after Captain America 2, Coulson's girlfriend ended up as even a quasi-priority.

But that's not what they did. One of the escapees just happened to be obsessed with her and she was the first place he went, which Coulson was able to predict. So that worked out okay.

I'm not overly familiar with the comics, but it did seem like a little bit of a waste of a villain though. Dude that screw with electricity that much, and who got an "upgrade" while in SHIELD custody, had potential to be more than a one episode baddie. SHIELD relies on technology a lot to deal with threats like that, and he could have playing merry hell with it.

Also glad that the Ward storyline is progressing. I was a little concerned he'd manage to keep his cover up til the Finale, but he's been blown, and I'm glad. Skye knows, he has to have at least a vague suspicion that she knows. Coulson and the others are back at base. Skye may have left some kind of message in that wall painting (which changes to a different picture each day). The NSA satellites may well have caught Ward on camera being a bad guy.

So there's no way that shit isn't about to hit the fan with the characters in this show.

Women having more common sense IS the trope. :p

People are dumb/smart in general, gender doesn't affect it. Except the while emotional thing of periods of course.

I've always seen it in the context of the ancient myths about/rituals concerning women: Maenads and Bacchic ritual (i.e. Euripides' The Bacchae), the Thesmophoria, Amazons etc.

In other words, the power of creation and chaos/destruction inherent in each woman is set loose, and what we see are the results of such an uninhibited ancient force. The lesson then, (at least according to ancient Greek ideas of this trope) is that such powers must be contained and directed for the good of society, or all of society will be lost.

Like Cheddar said, I don't agree with it, but that's how I've interpreted it.

This episode was pretty awesome. Stark is in the private sector again now. And Hill is working for him, and calling him by his first name - some hints of their comic relationship maybe.

The best line of the episode goes to Ward when talking to Hill - "We all lost respect for Fury when he choose you as his second, if he wanted eye candy around, he mightve atleast chosen Romanoff."

I really enjoyed the reveal at the this episode. Was a long build up, and I really didn't see it coming.

This show has really come into it's own now, I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

I'm actually really looking forward to the finale. Too much shit has gone down for it not to be pretty epic.

Also enjoyed the most recent episode, though there were a few times in the diner that the show just felt awkward/uncomfortable to watch (and not in a good way).

Neat twist at the end, though I'm not sure if I like it or not.

I really hope this show gets another season now. :/ Shouldn't we know by now if it is though?

And my favourite part of the revelation was Coulsons reaction. Was perfect.

ABC renews its series late. Don't think any of the winter-spring shows have been renewed yet.

This may have been settled already but if it has the conclusion escapes me. Have we discovered who Sky was in communication with when she became a Shield intern of sorts and still waved the Red Tide flag?

Thanks. I think I missed two episodes in the middle of the season. Ward referencing his past during the episode with the Viking rage stick was also a bit confusing. I'll just find some rewatch time before the finale.

Very good episode this week, though not quite enough explanation on why Ward felt loyalty to Garrett. As a sidenote, if Grant's brother isn't Terrance Ward I will be disappoint.

Coulsans reaction to old gadgets and telling sky to get ready for large file transfer. Epic

I might rage if Ward is easily redeemed/forgiven.

    That would suck.

New information about Skye is interesting. I'm curious where they're going with her backstory -- anyone recognize it from a Marvel source or does it appear to be completely original?

As usual, most scenes with Ward continue to try my patience. I don't like the actor that much, I don't like the character, his lines tend to be mediocre, etc. The only thing I do like about Ward is that he ended up being HYDRA and that's interesting. Though Ward is less irritating with Garrett than he was playing pretend with Coulson's team in terms of acting.

It will suck if he gets an easy redemption. Trust there should be irreparably shattered, unless they spend entire seasons restoring some of it. Not to mention that he crossed a few lines already -- murdering Hand, for one, even if she was a bit of a bitch, and various other things.

    Fitz was irritating.

I expected Garrett to shoot the dog, so what happened wasn't a surprise.

Why the hell were they flying so damn low that Fitz and Simmons dropping out of the plane in a box might not kill them? Also did Ward know that? Because if he knew they had a half decent chance of surviving... eh.

I'm not exactly a Marvel expert and I wouldn't be surprised if she turns out to be some C-list hero who'd never get their own movie, but so far Skye's backstory seems completely original.

My first thought was that she's a mutant, but that's incredibly unlikely with Fox owning the movie rights to the X-Men. Even if Marvel could technically get away with using mutants in Agents (don't Marvel/Disney still own all the TV rights?), they wouldn't want to introduce something to the MCU that they could never tie back into the movies.

My second thought was that she's an alien, but if that was the case then Fitz-Simmons should have easily been able to spot it when they were running all those tests on her DNA to figure out what GH-325 was.

My third thought was that she's an Inhuman, and that's the one I'm going with. They're basically mutants without any of the X-Gene bullshit, a subrace of humans created by alien experimentation. The aliens in question, the Kree, are about to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy and were mentioned on Agents by Sif (when Coulson asked about blue aliens). The T.A.H.I.T.I. alien was probably Kree too, but I don't know if that was ever stated outright. Marvel have been talking about making an Inhumans movie for a while now, and Skye's big reveal would make for a pretty good tie in.

That's assuming we even get a second season of Agents. What have the ratings been like?
