I've just downloaded Mass Effect off of my friends Steam account and am trying to get it started, but this error keeps popping up.

Failed to compile global shader FDOFAndBloomGatherFallbackPixelShader

CxxThrowException() Address = 0x7815e89 (filename not found)
GMatrix2D ::Swap() Address = 0x10da7b63 (filename not found)

    Help?

Start > Run > 'dxdiag' > Display tab. Screenshot or copy-paste everything in the 'Device' box.

Although according to Google, that error message means the game thinks your video card doesn't have shader model 3, which Mass Effect requires. If that's the case, the only way to fix it is a hardware update.

Bleugh. Dragon Age doesn't work on here either. KOTOR does though, but that's pretty old.

Sigh. Guess I will just have to wait for my laptop to get fixed.

EDIT: Ohh I just passed 500 posts! Yay.

Laptop is never going to work again! Though I might as well try to play it on this old desktop.

    Help?

That's a rather old graphics card. Like, almost a decade old, IIRC.

Sounds like you need a new one.

(Yeah, FX5600 only has shader version 2.0).

The FX5600 is a piece of shit.

    Trust me.

I had one up until about 4 years ago. They blow. You won't be able to play much on that. I think the last game I managed to get wokring on it was KOTOR II and even then it was pretty laggy and bad.

I just looked it up. It's an AGP 8x card, which means the slot it's in won't be able to house modern PCI-E cards.

So to update your graphics to a reasonable level you'd need a new motherboard. Which would mean a new processor. And probably RAM. And probably PSU.

Sigh. I figured it would be something like that. Stupid computer. Only game I can play is KOTOR1.

    Thanks for the advise though.

Okay, downloaded Mass Effect on my dads laptop.

Lol, not a hope, Anya. Not on an integrated laptop chipset.

Actually you can get ME to work on that chip. Just not very well. *And good god is the lag on the Citadel horrible*

I had that chip and played both ME and ME2 on it. DAO was plain unplayable though.

Edit: Of course it worked a smidge better after I got some custom drivers but still. Man am I happy I got the G73. No more lag.

Hm...you're using Steam. I used the retail version. I updated my intel drivers to the very latest and it booted properly. I used the drivers here for a extra 5 FPS (But like I said it's extremely laggy). *Note for the drivers to work you need at least 3GB of RAM.

2nd note: It takes away sleep and hibernate so if you rely on those features don't use them.

I seem to have the same issues you do Anya. Seems nothing that I download from Steam works. At all.
