Only problem I have with FTB so far in the version I play is goddamn Gregtech. If you don't know about Gregtech, it's a mod that kicks you in the crotch repeatedly. It changes a million recipes to make them harder to acquire until you have diamonds coming out of your bum. In order to get something as simple as a mining drill, you need to go get a blast furnace by going into the nether and killing a gazmillion blazes and slimes and collecting nether brick, and it takes forever.

The portal gun mod is in the pack, too - while fun, it is rather overpowered and the recipes are dirt cheap. Especially given that gregtech is in it.

FTB introduced me to twilight forest for the first time, however, and it's been amazing. Would really recommend playing it when you've set yourself up with some armour.

So far in my playthrough I've failed at IC2, the first mod I usually set up with. I have little more than a quarry and some machines to process what the quarry mines, and then I left for the twilight forest and have been rolling in diamonds and cool gear ever since.

Edit: You should check out the FTB maps if you've never seen them. Nice bit of challenge, there, and you can play competitively.

Heh, I've never actually played the Gregtech addon but it seems to have the same kind of design philosophy as EE2; if it costs a lot then it's 'balanced'.

While I'm not strictly against it, the point becomes kind of moot when you have automatic means to collect the resources, essentially just encouraging you to afk.

On the other hand, it also makes you actually build stuff rather than spend more time in a crafting grid, which is kinda cool. I may have to give it a chance next time I try IC2.

At the very least it's nowhere near as bad as Gravisuit.

The mod I'm actually most excited about lately is Thaumcraft 3. It has the perfect combination of cool shit, challenge and originality. Can't wait to see it get a little farther in development as there isn't a huge amount to do at the moment.

    Also, Golems. Nuff said.

I actually enjoy GregTech to a degree (on easy mode, not on hard mode... good god, the guys on the Mindcrack server are crazy), but that may be because FTB was the first modded Minecraft I've played, and it had GT already installed.

I've been playing my own blend of the Mindcrack pack, disabling some mods (Traincraft, xycraft, etc.) and adding others (Mystcraft, which has become my favorite mod of all) and dialing down GregTech's difficulty. Also,

You must be playing the Beta Pack A, because in the latest version the Portal Gun requires a freaking Nether Star to craft (although the Vorpal enchantments from RP2 makes getting skulls a bit easier)! Or you can find it in a dungeon chest like I did. By the by, you can also find steel in dungeon chests, which is how I've found all of mine up to this point.

I've just started delving into Thaumcraft, and it's... fun.

Tried Thaumcraft 3 and it is a little too much for me. I think I stopped at tier 2 research because it was boring just collecting materials then clicking the research button...

People play minecraft on modes other than hard? :)

Definitely a brilliant mod. I've actually started messing about with making a let's play series of it recently, if that's of any interest. (I've yet to see if it will make it off the ground, but it's been fun so far.)

Yep, the server I'm on is for the beta pack. The nether star? Jeebus. That sounds awesome.

I've visited a lot of chests so far in my travels and there definitely isn't steel in chests to be found.

Precisely! I've only mucked about with it a little so far. Did you ever play thaum2? What do you think of it over the earlier version?

I love thaumcraft in all its iterations. Thaum3 has some potential for some really nice lab set ups, given the jars and golems, and I've barely gotten into what you can make with it yet. Research system seems more fun, if harder in some ways. Not as polished yet; seeing the beauteous things the creator did with the last version, I'm very excited for its future.

I've been playing on a friend's server, but they're doing an adventure map in creative mode - there's only two people doing survival so it's been a bit sad. I'd say yes, probably, though I'll miss having literal stacks of diamonds.

"I've been playing Minecraft since before it came out"

Oh Notch, I love you so much.

I'd definitely play on a FTB server if one was made. I've heard they can be a bitch to manage, what with the many things that could fuck things up, so I'd go for a really stable version if you can find it.

I just recently started playing on normal, having been playing on easy since I started with 1.8.1. The only time I've ever played on hard difficulty was on the DLP server (assuming that was the difficulty the server was set on... which I think it was).

But what I was actually talking about was the GregTech mod itself. The way the Mindcrack guys (which, if you've never heard of them, I fully recommend it!) have GT set to its maximum difficulty, where macerators require diamonds, among other insanity.

No, FTB is the first experience I've had with modded Minecraft, and I've only played in Beta Pack A and my blend of the Mindcrack pack.

Oh definitely. However, I think that we should get together and decide which mods we want to use, and how we're going to approach them (i.e., full on hardcore mode for GregTech, creative-generated notebooks for Mystcraft, etc.).

I can't remember the last time I played any game on a difficulty below hard, never mind on easy mode. If you're going to learn a game it might as well be by jumping in head first and seeing how you do.

I was very drunk this morning and CareOtters and I started building a set of rules to be used on a HardCore world to build a Minecraft equivalent of Nuzlocke, mainly to be used for writing Minecraft fics in my case, but in general should be fun, I'll post it in here tomorrow once we finish ironing them out.

Trying to get back into this, but it's running like dogshit on my PC. Java is leaking memory lik never before, quickly gobbling up to 1.3gb of RAM, and starting to stutter after 10 minutes or so. Vanilla MC, Optifine, everything I've tried ends the same.

How much RAM do you have and is it purely the lack of RAM that's causing your issues?

Edit: Someone told me that they were having performance issues in the new update, too - dramatic framerate drops, only on the newest updates. Most people are fine, but it's strange.

So I haven't played minecraft in about a year, so I have no idea what's happening in the modding scene. Silly me, I jumped straight into Feed The Beast to see what's different from good ol' vanilla.

    Holy damn, it's intimidating.

There's so much. Too much. New recipes, reworked old ones, magic, electrical engineering, portals, jetpacks, factories, not to mention the updates to vanilla without the mods. I'm well and truly lost.

So I'll keep playing. Is there a DLP FTB server?

So I have been testing Mystcraft on 1.4.6. I have made to this day around 150 random ages and still haven't got the void or dense ore symbol, but around 70% of the ages I got some kind of status effect on arrival(slow, poison, weakness, mining fatigue). The glowstone symbol is real useful because you don't have to go to the nether and mine them over lava lakes. The crystal portals are awesome, good transportation mode after you made a linkbook modifier(8 diamond block and 1 gold block). But still the mod feels empty, it has a great potential. Maybe because I'm using without any other mods...

The negative status effects are due to the ages you are in being unstable! When you write your own ages just make sure you have one of each kind of symbol and it should come out stable barring things like dense ores which add instability.

Also, when I played around with mystcraft on 1.4.6 dense ores and void worlds were the second and first things I encountered. 150 ages and neither of them? Ouch, man.

I learnt most of what I know from let's play videos. If you're up for it, I'd recommend watching Direwolf20's series or his mod spotlights. He's had a big hand in making FTB and really does excellent tutorials on the different mods.

I know why I got them, I just mentioned that those are what I got. Also fuck your luck with void. I want a void world for travel hub for my crystal portals.

Wat. So you're saying that even though you were writing your own worlds with all the symbols covered you were still getting unstable worlds the majority of the time? That's crazy, way different to my experiences with it.

Hell, I even got stable worlds when just spawning completely random ones.

No I got stable ones on random, and every 150 of those I mentioned were randoms. The ones I wrote myself were stable.

Sorry, but nope. 100% of random ages are unstable, and that comes straight from the mod creator's mouth. Even if there doesn't seem to be anything negative, there are more... insidious forms of instability.

As for getting symbols from the notebook... The mod creator suggests just getting the notebook from creative mode, as that has all the symbols already present. It seems like cheating (because it kinda is), but it beats having hundreds of worlds that clog up a server.
