I was watching an episode of Star Trek the other day when idea occurred to me. It was one of the episodes involving the mirror universe. The idea of the universe is that everything is the exactly the same as our universe... but the exact opposite.

Basically it means that everyone that is in our universe exists in the mirror one but is the moral inversion of us. Events also tend to follow similar paths but also opposite. I will try to give a few examples as it is hard to grasp.

The mirror Harry Potter Universe:-

* Tom Riddle was raised in the orphanage but was treated well had many friends used his very limited grasp of accidental magic to help his friends ie Healing scraped knees.

* Dumbledore defeated Grindewald but not to save Wizard kind but to eliminate the champion of the light so he could rule over the magical Britain.

* The Pure-Blood elite fight a underground war to protect Muggles from the Muggleborn wizards who turn on the muggles due to the intoxicating power of magic (The whole power corrupts thing)

* Minerva is Still head of Griffindor but not because she is a smart and strict witch... she is a complete slut who will fuck anyone to get ahead. A complete ditz.

* Hagrid is a genetic genius and breads and creates ever more dangerous creatures to add to Dumbledore enforcement army. He doesnt do it out of respect but fear of the old man.

* Voldemort was at Godrics Hollow on Halloween night not to kill Harry but save him. He had gotten word from his spy the ever faithful and charming Peter. Lily and James Potter had realised in their last year at Hogwarts that the chance of them having a magically powerful child was great thus decided to get married. When the child was born they planned to preform a ritual on the Halloween the most magically powerful day of the year. Sacrificing their powerful child they would strip Harry of his power and life infusing it in themselves. They planned to over throw Dumbledore and take the Wizarding world for their own... and then turn on each over till only one survived.

Voldemort managed to throw himself infront of Harry during the last part of the ritual killing himself Lilly and James and infusing a portion of all their powers unto Harry. Peter found the wreak of the house and sent Harry to live with his relatives who being the selfless and kind people they are changed their name and moved house to protect their new charge.

* 10 years latter Harry has been pampered and is ready to rejoin the wizarding world and fight his way through Hogwarts to take his rightful place at the head of the Wizarding world.

The events can be changed to fit what ever story line you wish and the story can be picked up at anypoint during Hogwarts so long as you give either flash backs a a prolog to chow whats taken place.

The events in each book would still happen but not in the same way. Harry would go after the stone to keep it from Voldemort he goes after it to strip Dumbledore of one of his main assets and take the power for his own.

Dumbledore can't kill Harry due to him being the only one who can finish off Voldemort. A task that Dumbledore hasn't been able to fully achieve for three decades and it truly scares him. He tries to corrupt and manipulate Harry.

The rest of the details can go anyway but thats the gist of how this backwards world would work. I have read several stories with elements of character reversal but not the entire world.

but it is a great idea but it will need a very skilled author to write this up.

 

This sounds like its full of win; it would be very interesting to see this develop into a novel length story

The problem is, how does Dumbledore have contact with Harry if we all know he's the bad guy? It doesn't seem like Harry would come to Hogwarts when he knows Dumbledore has it out for him and wants him to kill a good guy.

Stealing the stone for himself is a pretty cool idea--it could be an interesting plot bunny by itself. Instead of giving the stone back to Dumbledore, he recognizes the amount of power he would hold and he keeps it for himself.

Downfalls of your plot: Snape would be a good guy trying to infiltrate Dumbledore's system at Riddle's insistence.

What about Lupin and Sirius? Or the Black family?

That would make the Malfoys good guys and the Weasleys evil, both riding on Riddle and Dumbledore's coat-tails, respectively.

In short, there are a lot of interesting things that can be done here, but there are also numerous things that can easily go wrong and kill the story.

Treading carefully is key.

 

The Weasleys don't really need to be "evil". Rather than have 7 children because they want a big family they have it for protection. Molly and Arthur rule the family through some blood link and now have 7 servants. They push their children to their limits.

The Malfoys front the pure blood movement to protect the muggle world. They see them as a important part of our world and will fight to the death to help protect them.

Lupin turns into the mirror universes version of Greyback. A sadistic bastard who kills for the joy.

Sirius would still turn from his family but because they help the Malfoys protecting the Muggles and he wishs to exterminate them. He DOES commit a crime to place him in Azkaban and then eventually uses powerful dark magic to break out.

I don't pretend to have it all planned out but with suitable planning and a decent author I think it could work well.

 

Why would Tom Riddle take the name Lord Voldemort? Also, if Hagrid is a genius in the Mirror World because he's the opposite in the Cannon World, wouldn't Dumbledore/Voldemort be morons in the Mirror World? Or at the least have no power?

If it was truly a opposite world, Grindelwald would kill Dumbledore...which isn't a bad idea...what would have happened if Grindelwald had been the Light's Saviour and Dumbledore the one who fell into darkness?...Different people, different decisions..

 

it is nearly impossible to create an opposite world because every canon character would be different. i completely agree with crimson-genius. then many canon characters wouldn't even live. if it is the opposite then lily and james should be alive and etc...

 

No, no, that's not how it would be at all. Like S said, the characters would be different, but, and this is key, the events would be almost identical. So, despite being evil, Dumbledore would still win. Harry's parents and Voldemort would still die, and Harry would still be sent off to the Dursley's, whom would actually be good parents this time around.

It would definitely be worth a read, if pulled off correctly.
