Hmn . . . well, I'm only really involved in two fandom communities, but there are others that I have a soft spot for.

    1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Yeah, this one beats out Harry for me, since my absolutely favorite fanfic writer (Tenhawk) is a major presence in the Buffy community. In fact, most of my other favorite fandoms (excluding #2) come from reading crossover fics centered around the Buffyverse. As with most Buffy fans, I was less than thrilled with the last two seasons, although I still think S7 and S4 are about even as far as bottom-of-the-barrel crap.

    2. Harry Potter - While I think that the entire series began a downward spiral worthy of E! True Hollywood Stories, I've read more quality fanfics in this fandom than any other, including my #1. Unlike my other favorites, I'm not generally a fan of crossovers in this one, since the potential for originality is so great here that it seems like a waste to bring in a whole other fandom just to spice it up.

    3. Stargate: SG1 - Absolutely great series, and my favorite sci-fi series of all time. Space operas bore me, and alien monster thrillers start to get boring after a while, so this show was a welcome breath of fresh air. This is a favorite crossover in my first two favorites, so it works out great for me.

    4. Highlander - Another fandom that grew on me from reading Buffy crossover fics. How can you not love the concept of the Immortal? Ignoring most of the movies and concentrating on the series or throwing the concept into another fandom can really highlight the grand tragedy of immortal existence. I honestly think this concept could have been so much more than a couple of cheap action movies and a short-lived series.

    5. World of Darkness (Old) - This was mentioned before, and I wholeheartedly agree, although the fandom is extremely small when it comes to fics. These were my gateways into roleplaying, and the intricate cosmology built into the games made me possibly the most geeky person ever in high school. To this day, I can name every Vampire Clan and their Disciplines, every Werewolf Tribe, and every Mage Tradition without bothering to think about it. I have pretty much the entire WoD library in PDF format from the Revised Edition (just before the reset to the New World of Darkness). Honorary Mention: Exalted doesn't really have a fandom per se, but it is chock-full of excellent ideas for use in crossover fics, and I think that a Harry Potter/Exalted crossover could absolutely rock, even if it would be ridiculously overpowered.

    Others:

Wheel of Time: While it's not properly Tolkienesque, since it lacks many of the hallmarks of Tolkien's style of high fantasy, it still manages to fall short of true originality. Its a long, dry read that lost me halfway through the second book.

Lord of the Rings: No one can ever come close to this masterpiece, and no one should even try. I despise LotR fanfics because they are (at least, the ones I've read) pale imitations or fangirl excuses to have Legolas suck off Aragorn.

Belgariad/Mallorean: There's not a big fandom for this, and I feel there should be. It has enormous potential, despite the annoying dialogue, glaring continuity errors, and repetitive cliches in canon twelve books.

I am not an anime fan, so I completely ignore those fandoms.

I like Kim Possible too guys, don't worry. Well actually, that's probably a reason for larger concern.

I could do without the stupid Ron. Seems to be the staple of things that piss me off. Rons.

I'd have put Pirates of the Caribbean but the fandom actually pisses me off so much that I can't stand it. Bigger slash writers than Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings combined. Ugh.

There are plenty of things I love and want to see some good fanfics out of, but it's not happening. Once upon a time I tried Artemis Fowl, scary. Anyways, my fandoms I am a part of:

Harry Potter of course. Awesomeness that is the HP world. And it's just fun to mess with.

Naruto. The manga's kinda starting to get boring but I still love it.

Bleach. Yeah, I need to read the latest 20-ish chapters but I still like it. I agree with Khantael that I like the Soul Society crew better.

Danny Phantom. Since she already said that, I'm not scared to. There is some good stuff in the fandom and there isn't a whole ton of slash. Or maybe I just keep missing it all.

And my latest obsession: Golden Sun. One of the few video games I am actually capable of winning. I have no clue why I'm in love with it (probably that fangirl mindset,) but I am. Course it's a couple of years old so there's not really much of a fandom anymore.

And I agree with Bio on Pirates. There is way too much slash in there. The only thing I love there is my crack!pairing. Jack x Jar of Dirt. But I still avoid it at all costs.

I'm going by what I am currently into the most and on down. So *shock* Harry Potter is number....

    1] Harry Potter
I started reading Harry Potter when I was a freshman at NYU. We had to read the first book, and then adapt the first ten pages of a screenplay for the movie, which was coming out that year. The student who's adaptation was the closest to that of the actual movie got extra credit. Anyhoo...before that assignment I honestly had not heard of HP, or held much interest in it. It took the fourth book, actually, years from then, to really get me into it. And of course I have told the story of how I came to write the fanfiction (*cough* former DR fangirl *cough*).

    2] Battle Star Galatica
I am really fuckin into this show right now. I love it. I just watched the first two seasons on DVD and I have recently started reading some fanfiction on it. Not too bad, but I might try my hand at one of my own once I've satisfied my obsession with Lessons.

3] The Lord of the Rings
Got into it from watching the first movie, then read the all three books in the series, then read The Hobbit. I tried my hand at writing a LotR fic, but it was received with mixed reviews--you guys think HP fans are picky...!

    4] ER
Man, shut up. I used to love that damn show. Being a sucker for romance, I wrote a couple of very well-recieved ones, but now I've kind of lost interest in the show and the fanfiction as well, really...

    5] Movies in general...
When I see a movie that I love, and find myself wishing there were more to it than the two hours or so I spent in the theater, then typically I venture into the fanfiction for that movie.

I'm sure that i will get fired for this post... possibly even the slightly older meaning involving kindling and a stake.

    1. Star Trek
    2. Stargate
    3. Kim Possible
    4. Babylon 5
    5. Halo

    1. Star Trek
I've been a Trekkie since grade school. All 5 series are worth watching and re-watching. damn the company for cutting enterprise short and fuck em with a spnkr for "These Are the Voyages ..."

    2. Stargate
Both SG1 and Atlantis are great i espscialy like that there is new episodes even with the stupid strike.

    3. Kim Possible
I started watching it with my nephew and wife. It may sound odd but some of the best fic I've read is from this category.

    4. Babylon 5
B5 was awesome the greatest fic I've ever read is from this series A Dark, Distorted Mirror . "The familiar characters are all there, but with a difference. Ten years before the story opens a single, pivotal event occurred differently.... .... And history changed. Destiny faded. All that was, and is, and yet may be was altered; irrevocably, eternally, forever.
And twelve years ago, as history changed, the two Vorlons in Dukhat's secret chamber, who once had been called the future, realised in that one, fateful moment, that the future they knew now belonged elsewhere, and a new future was theirs.
And the seeds of a bargain were struck. (Chapter 2, The One and the Nine)
What was the event? And what was the bargain? Well, for that you'll have to read the story....

    5. Halo
Having played through 3 campaigns, read all of the books and about a few thousand hours of live, fanfic, and machinema... I'm hooked and frustrated about not knowing what happens to the Chief and Cortana

so bring on the flames for no hp in the list and feel free to comment polite or otherwise

In the order I got into it.

    1. Harry Potter.

    2. Buffy- even though I have probably only watched a quarter of the total episodes. I like Xander fics and an occassional Oz.

    3. Heroes

    4. Dexter

The last two are mostly because of forums, but I like an occassional fanfic centered around the serial killers.

    1. Harry Potter - Definitely will always be my favorite. First fantasy series I touched, and the first one I bought (2/3 of my bookshelf is nonfiction). Good universe, interesting characters, and an overall nice plot start to finish.

The fanfics are a bit shit, even the ones that I like, but they do alright in absence of moar canon.

    2. Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X - My second love. Ever since Adult Swim ran it, I've been hooked. Great historical references, romance and humor intertwined to the point where it actually adds something instead of making you want to punch the TV, and more gore then you could collect in a bucket.

There's something really appealing to me about a serial killer who worked for the government now living as a peacenik, but still willing to put a bitch in the ground if he feels it's warranted.

That, and Sanosuke. Hands down my favorite character in any universe, ever. The guy has absolutely no qualms walking into a sword fight with just his fists and putting his knee through a bitches throat.

    3. Trigun - Great action, utterly original plot, and scenes frequently go from quirky and humorous to dead serious, someone's-about-to-die atmospheres. Just excellent.

    4. Shin Chan - Not really a series, or a fandom of any sort, but it's definitely one of my favorites. I shunned away from it at first because it looks kinda like it was drawn by a preschooler, but the lulz in the show are just top notch. I never laughed IRL at anime before I watched Shin Chan.

    5. Dragonball & Z - Yes, it was excruciatingly drawn out episode-to-episode, blah fucking blah. Even that aside, it kept me watching. It got me interested in and watching other anime (Trigun and RRK), it had awesome action, and invented the best fictional race the world will ever know - the Saiyan.

    d(o_o)b Two thumbs up.

I'd include Cowboy BeBop, but it's more Top 10 vs Top 5. I really enjoyed it, and if I'd never seen Shin Chan it'd probably have that slot, but meh.

Edit: Akira really deserves mention to, since I obsessed over that as much as DB/Z back in the day. I think I have a few copies (still) on VHS. Anime's focusing around street gangs and shitloads of gore are generally ftw.

Samurai X and Trigun are fucking awesome. I could never find good fanfiction for it though.

    Harry Potter
It's just so versatile, the magic system is unique among all of the fantasy genre, and it really is a world that you would want to live in.

    Star Wars
Some good fics here, but most are dull unless you're a serious Star Wars fan and know a lot about the expanded universe - which I don't.

    Buffy
Great show, some good fanfics, though mostly crossovers.

    Stargate
Again, great show, and also again, great crossovers.

I don't really have a fifth, I generally stick to those four, though will occasionally dabble in a bit of BSG or Smallville.

I only read and write in the Harry Potter verse, but if I had to pick my top 5 fandoms they'd go as such.

    Whedon-verse
It seems like a waste and a bit redundant to put Buffy, Angel, or Firefly on the list as they're own standing; although they certainly could earn their own spots. Joss Whedon's creative mind is exactly the place(s) I'd want to live in. Firefly is by far my favorite but it had the least amount of run and therefore less opportunity to show any warts. Angel is next and was great because it finished stronger than it started. Buffy was the original and will always be special for it.

    Farscape
Aside from Whedon's team of writers, a better group of cynical, witty, sarcastic, funny, and genious writing there was not. It's rare air when you can acheive a verse where nothing is over the top. They did a fucking looney toons Criton's death episode...it was the tits!

    Potter
The canon verse fell off so badly after book 5 that I have to qualify this fav. Rowling's universe is my most prized and favorite to wander through. I've written in it, I've easily read more Harry Potter than anything else, and I still travel through it everyday. On that note alone it should be my top. But with familiarity comes the loss of glitter and perfection. Canon Potter is so flawed I almost dislike it. Fanfiction Potter is so ruined by the disparate factions (*cough* slash, *cough* squeeing fangirl, *cough* avid shippers) that I outright despise aspects of it. But I can't put it away...sad I tell you.

    Stargate
I love Stargate, after 10 years I still love Stargate, and I'll keep watching Atlantis until they pull it...which might not be long from now. There has never been a show that can present so many retread ideas and yet have characters good enough that I can still watch. Stargate was never above playing the spin the age old science fiction plotline wheel, add in done before twist x, dash with forbidden romance tease y, shake and serve...yet I still watched.

    Battlestar Galactica/Star Wars
I'll put them both here because I'm indifferent to which bottoms out this list. The drop from the other four to here is significant. BSG is like the opposite of Stargate where they keep playing the "our characters will always show their greatest flaws at the very worst times" ploy that I've grown tired of them. I couldn't be happier with the plot twist at the end of last season...at least that means that some of their fuckedupitness served a purpose (perhaps).

As for Starwars I literally grew up with the original trilogy. All my life I've wanted to be a Jedi and still do to this day. But not a real Jedi, cause Jedi's can't get laid, and it some kind of fucking waste if you can't use your Jedi powers to a) mind trick a bitch into giving some up. b) use the force to show homegirl about all that's right in getting down with some Jedi lovin', and c) playing the "i'll let you touch my lightsaber" line.

Still, the jaunts through eps. I, II, and III sort of took the luster off of this verse for me.

A question...can one claim the entire Marvel-verse or do you have to specifically state one? If they can play in each others towns without ramification why can't I claim the entire verse as a fav?

    1. Harry Potter. I can't really say anything about the fandom that hasn't already been said by everyone else, though.

    2. R.A. Salvatore's Forgotten Realms series. It's the only literature (besides HP) that captivates me enough to dig into millions of horribly written pieces of crappy fanfiction just to find the few that deserve to be read.

    3. LotR. Though I've never really gotten into the fandom, the world Tolkien spent years building is one of the most awe-inspiring stretches of imagination in history.

    4. Metal Gear Solid. Face it, Snake is among the coolest characters ever.

    1. Harry Potter : No matter how much I get annoyed by it, I always come back to it eventually. I guess that gives it the number 1 spot. I have read a lot of enjoyable stories that eased my boredom. The books themselves annoy me, but I read HP fanfictions before the books, so I suppose that's the cause.

    2. Naruto : The manga -and- anime are difficult to pull through, but the fandom has proved to be enjoyable at times.

    3. Inuyasha : Guilty, as charged. It's the inner fan girl of my youth escaping. I even still watch the anime occasionally, but not really with any interest. I enjoy reading the fanfiction that twists the realms of this romance-filled, kinda fluffy anime/manga.

    4. Dragonball Z : My first fandom. This one I watched before reading fanfiction, unlike the ones above. I guess that explains it all, there are few good stories to find, but those that I do easily become favorites.

    5. Hellsing : I don't find many at all in this catagory, and it was a toss up between that and Trigun. It's understandable, though, because I only read fanfiction to fandoms that I view as incomplete, and niether of those animes really left it like that.

Meh, I guess I don't get far out of the anime section when it comes to fandoms. The books I read usually leave me satisfied with the story, so I don't feel any particualar need to change it/read about people altering it or continuing it.

Editing my previous selection as I've kinda moved on for a few things.

    Ones I'm keeping:

Harry Potter - Do I really need to explain?
    Stargate - Read above ^.
Discworld - It's a shame about him having Alzheimer's, but he's done well so far and he's had a very good writing career.

    New ones:

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu - Blame that stupid Hare Hare Yukai dance/song (I can't get the damn thing out of my head) but I had to find out where it came from and ended up with this. Anime is cool and I'm reading through the books at the minute. Some good shit in there.

Naruto - The anime and manga themselves may be shit but the fandom is on par with HP in my opinion. It's got to the point where I'm reading more of that than HP fanfiction now. Though I keep tabs on the Work by Author section here.

Honorable mentions are Top Gear (which is still fantastic), Heroes and the novel for Command and Conquer 3 (cause my jaw literally dropped when I saw it and it is a good read for those who enjoy the series).

I hate how I can read the words hare hare yukai and the song will automatically start playing in my head.

    As for my top 5,

    1. Harry Potter - A part of me is still in denial that I'm a part of this fandom at all, but I can't ignore the hours I spend reading HP fanfics.

    2. Naruto- I hate myself for this... I really do. I don't like reading the manga or watching the anime, I think it's a terrible manga and has completely idiotic concepts to prolong the series, but I find myself reading the fanfics anyway. Maybe because the world that some authors make are more interesting or something...

    3. Suzumiya Haruhi- Probably the single anime that made me back into a fanboy. I think a lot of it just has to do with Haruhi, the crazy things I'd end up doing if I was friends with her!

    4. Star Wars- Probably just one of those child hood past times, but it seems I'm particularly attached to it. I'm more partial to the KOTOR universe though.

    5. Cowboy Bebop- I'm not sure I've ever actually read a really good bebop fic, but I'm very attached to the style the anime has.
