Probably didn't have the power to, he didn't approve but like the villagers don't really like Naruto Sandaime couldn't force them to do anything one way or the other.

 

Well, we don't know what Sandaime may have done when it was revealed that the Uchiha were planning an overthrow. He didn't approve of how they were being treated by Danzou and the old advisor's, but he may have reacted differently to their plan. For all we know he may have agreed with his advisor's that the Uchiha were getting out of line and something needed to be done.

 

Now i don't know about you guys but i don't blame the way they acted towards the uchiha. Heck, it would make sense that they would do this. They thought Madara was dead many years ago. Who else had the power to control the nine tailed demon other than a uchiha?

The fact is, a nine tailed demon appeared out of no where and attacked the village. Either that is one big coincidence or it was someone turning against the village by one of the uchiha. They knew it was a uchiha but which one. So they turned Itachi as a spy. They could "NOT" have known it was madara. Otherwise they would had to have some serious information network because the akatsuki hides way too good to be seen so easily.

And so, it was to a point where the massacres of the uchiha clan went on by itachi. It makes perfect sense.

Supposedly, the Uchiha had nothing to do with Kyuubi. But that's if we believe Madara.

 

At this point Madara is telling the truth, IMO. Though most likely he is fabricating some of the fact's.

 

On a side note, did you see the picture of Madara's fight against Hashirama in there? He used the fucking fox itself as a weapon! Now we know how the Valley of the End was formed . Fucking awesome.

On topic though, I reckon he's twisting the facts to fit his story and make Sasuke sympathetic to his cause. I can imagine that the Kyuubi attack on Konoha could have just been a coincidence, but I seriously doubt it. The Uchiha uprising though, that's awesome. I think I'm actually regaining some hope for the manga because of this... Sasuke is going to join Akatsuki, because the Sandaime/Danzo/the advisors are responsible for his parents' deaths, pretty much directly, considering Itachi was just a tool to be used against them.

To me this chapter did not reveal Konoha to be evil but rather revealed it to be a real village formed from war and with multiple influences. No society in history is completely pure or devoid of corruption, Konoha has now been revealed to be no different. The Third was a good man with good intentions but when faced with the well being of a nation even good leaders falter. I am glad to see that the sides are becoming less definitive, it adds suspense and depth. Part two of Naruto has been relatively linear, up until now, I look forward to seeing the rest of Madara's story and how it pertains to the events of the present.

I am in no hurry to get back to Naruto and co, the Uchiha story is central right now for a reason. This story has been a long time coming and up until now we have only been given glimpses into it. I am more interested in the story now than I have been in a long time

 

What the fuck happened in this chapter! I foolishly believed that Kishi would finally improve after chapter 398. I was hoping that the Sandaime had ordered the Uchiha massacre or something along these lines... Instead, all we got was a lot of conversation and a redeemed-Madara. Or hopefully Madara was simply being very biased.

To me it seemed very lame that the Uchiha were considered Hokage's dogs because they were the police force. If they realised that giving them that position was just to control them they could have taken some other job. I also became very annoyed when Madara said that Konoha was the first hidden village and after it was formed all the other countries wanted to form a hidden village too. Technically, this is possible... but I got the whole "Konoha uber alles" vibe.

BUT I liked the fact that the Uchiha were planning to overthrow the government.

Kishimoto really could learn a thing or two from watching Code Geass or hell... even Death Note. Hopefully in the next chapter we will see some more blood, gore, action and plotting.

 

Madara isn't redeemed. Far from it in fact. The Uchiha might not have been trusted before Madara left. In the chapter it was said that the Nidaime was the one who gave the Uchiha their job, meaning the Shodaime was died in the fight, making the Senju even more angry.

Then we have the Kyuubi, while it is likely that Madara is being truthfull about this (I don't believe so) you have to take into account that Madara could control the Kyuubi, so when Kyuubi attacked out of no where the Uchiha's became the prime suspects.

What happened afterwards was what any village would have done. And that is keeping the village safe from a coup that would surely leave many injured, dead and homeless. They did this by keeping an eye on a bunch of violent, war wanting, powerful ninja. Exterminating them when rebel groups were popping up and would've led to violent bloodshed.

So really Madara started this chain which led to this.
